We knew this was coming when they quit at the end of last season. Georgia was ranked number 1 in the country, lost one game and was left out of the playoff. Yet, they still showed up and played in that bowl game.

Why does everyone say they quit? They went 13-0 only to be told they weren’t good enough by a bunch of random people in room. They used that Jordan Travis injury of an excuse just to keep the SEC in and everyone knows that. Georgia had an opportunity against Alabama and chocked when it mattered. Florida State wasn’t giving that opportunity over a bunch of hypothetical assumptions . No one gives a shit about Georgia beating Florida States backups with a 3rd string quarterback. Michigan is seen as the national champions.

FSU fan here. I never believed the staff was top 10, not even after 13-0. Josh has always talked up this staff and Mike, even when they looked like the worst staff in the P5 conferences. He seems to always defend them because he likes them, instead of critique them for what happens on the field.

Top 10 still means you can whiff in the portal. You can pull 10 guys from the portal, all the best at their position, and still whiff if there's no chemistry. It's why Calipari rarely won March madness with the best roster money can buy. Its why Billy Donovan won back-2-back titles with a great team of solid players. Horford pretty much was the only one that exceled in the NBA, yet as a team might be the best this century. They played like a Band of Brothers and it showed on the court. That's what FSU didn't do. The issue is football requires more players and the more you fill from the portal, the more unpredictable it gets and you just never know until you play the game. Same with Florida. They talked the talk all off season, looked great on paper, against themselves and then ran into a buzzsaw in Miami, who by the way, exceled in the portal this go around.

It’s interesting to watch the former 2 premier programs in the ACC have the exact opposite problems with the portal. Clemson refuses to use it entirely and FSU relies on it entirely too much. That’s why the top programs (Georgia, OSU, etc.) build their team’s foundation with players they recruited from HS and then fill in the gaps/create more depth with the portal. You gotta know how to balance the fine line between avoiding it and overusing it. Also, FSU should start Brock Glenn instead of DJU from now on. The kid has a ton of potential and can actually make those big throws 💯

I don't think Florida state uses the transfer portal too much. I think they use it for the wrong reasons. You're not going to survive at the top poaching the flameouts at the big schools. Their transfer portal auditions weren't even close to Gigantic by Colorado or ole miss standards. It was that sweet spot for power 5 teams where you are between 13 to 20 transfer if your recruiting class wasn't big enough.

The buyout is simply astronomical and FSU is not in a good position financially. Getting rid of Taggart after 2 seasons didn't help, Norvell lasting for 5 seasons has helped, but the extension last year puts his buyout at 63 million dollars. They cannot manage that. He had a good W-L record last year so that buys FSU another year to gather up the money (and hope he improves). I don't think they can afford to fire him in 2025 either though.

The lack of progression and development questions the credibility of a Florida State coaching staff that is in year five. Another issue that has become blatantly obvious is Norvell's recruiting struggles have finally come back to bite him in the backside. Five years in charge and his recruiting class have bear little to no fruit of his labor. Even if FSU fans want to blame DJ Uiagalelei, that still falls on Norvell for picking him out of the portal. It's also apparent Norvell hasn't competently developed any of the QBs that he has recruited and signed to the program. The best-case scenario is to change defensive coordinators over the bye week and consider putting Brock Glenn in to give themselves a spark.

The development of their players really culminated in the 2023 season's team. A lot of Norvell's players were already draft eligible in 2022, but opted to return another year to win a championship. Only 2 years ago FSU went 5-7, so its not like they've been this successful for long amounts of time. Coaches will have a down year sometimes, especially after a situation like that where your roster ends up gutted afterwards. And unlike Saban or Kirby, he wasnt established prior to COVID or the NIL era, so its much harder to land that high grade recruiting base without massive amounts of money (Which FSU just doesn't have, they don't have very many BIG names that have graduated from the school)

Ironically that could be part of the problem they are dealing with right now. FSU acted like they were too good for the ACC...now the ACC teams feel disrespected so they're coming for FSU like chariots of fire. OU suffered from a similar thing last year, their last season in the big 12. The big 12 teams (such as Kansas & OK St) felt disrespected that OU & TX were leaving for the SEC (even though that was about money and not level of competition). So the traditional big 12 teams gave both TX & OU their best shot possible. Texas was good enough to overcome that adversity but OU really struggled with it. Now, I believe, you're seeing something similar with FSU in the ACC right now. It may not be the whole issue but I think it factors into it.

I remember in my freshman year at Texas A&M, 1982, our 1st game was against Boston College. Neither I nor any of my peers had ever heard of that institution and remember, we were all freshmen with decent GPAs and high ACT/SAT scores so had recently been recruited by a lot of schools we'd never heard of before. besides the ones we were actually were interested in. And yet, NONE of us had heard of BC. So, we thought this was the typical opening game of a reasonably powerful team (back in the Southwest Conference days, remember) taking a cupcake for a warm-up before getting into serious business. And BC won 38-16. although most of us who were there remember it being like 52-10 or some such because it felt like such an ass-whupping. They had this quarterback named Doug Flutie whom you might have heard of. I mean, he even ended up on Wheaties cereal boxes not long after, which was a real honor back in the day, besides all his other awards and subsequent, rather successful, NFL career. So that was part of it. But their defense was obviously better than our offense, too, and only deep-in nerds remember anybody on that BC defense. So year, BC can bushwhack "more powerful" schools if it has a Flutie driving the bus and a bunch of competent unknowns on defense. BUT, that was over 40 years ago. The whole recruiting/NIL/portal thing has happened since then, so you'd think this would be rather less likely to happen today. That it happened to FSU just now speaks VOLUMES of the state of the FSU team. So yeah, things are bad there.

Joel Klatt said this on his show, but Dabo’s issue has been with Quarterbacks, not the portal. Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence were amazing, but later in their college careers they started masking other issues on the team.?When DJ played for Trevor after getting COVID in 2020, everyone thought that he was the next up. Didn’t pan out in ‘21. ‘22 was better though but he still had his struggles. Cade Klubnik plays in spots, people think he’s gonna be an upgrade and his first year starting was a lot of up and down. I believe Cade still has potential, but DJ is struggling mightily, and who knows when it gets better.

There may even be some inner workings/coaching that is causing issues that aren't obvious. My point has been that diving into the portal isn't necessarily the fix. Maybe this is why Dabo doesn't use the portal. Isn't this his main reason why he doesn't like the portal - guys won't give their all because they aren't loyal to the team, they are loyal to the $$$. If you have too many on the team from the portal, you have X number of egos all vying for attention and if they don't gel, they don't excel and that leads to infighting.

I’m not a Clemson or FSU fan but I totally understand why they want out. They bring in the majority of revenue for their conference yet don’t make much. It’s annoying how realignment has ruined college football, but FSU and Clemson really don’t have a choice if they want to stay competitive.

I personally don’t think both should take them however Florida State on principal should not just refuse to play in Bowls but refuse to except any bids. I tend to agree with the X post. He was on the hot seat before last year and now the hologram from last year is still ff and people see what FSU really is. He doesn’t recruit well and has been saved by the portal once. His portal picks haven’t panned out this year and his younger players don’t look like they are developing. Just saying, seems like it’s gonna be really HOT at the end of the season when they barely or do not make a bowl game.

This was his first recruiting class that are seniors now. remember that was a class he pieced together during covid. Look at the all the underclassmen. Thats the classes that will produce

So Josh, isn’t it the head coach’s job to create a culture where the players care? Last year when over half the FSU starters opted out of the bowl game spoke volumes about the culture. Georgia was the best team in the country and they were left out of the CFP, but they showed up for the bowl game. Am I missing something? I may be.

The portal is a double edged sword. Last year was the good side of the sword. This year is the bad side. It’s not sustainable long term. NIL & Transfer Portal as a combo is undefeated. Good luck going forward b/c unless they find a way to corral it & control it, this Wild Wild West style is not slowing down anytime soon
