Generally speaking, other than parts like the trigger, gold plating isn't something that you see on hard use firearms. It's more for commemorative items that aren't really going to be used much if at all.

You can use nail polish remover to clean medal of polish material, oil, grease anything

That's correct. Nail polish remover (acetone) works well for removing polishing compounds such as red rouge. Toulene works even better but is very similar to acetone. Thanks for the great input!

The kit comes with a 250mL bottle of our 24K Brush Gold which contains 2.8g of fine-gold. Assuming this piece is 3 square inches of area, you would be able to plate around 400 pieces to a typical decorative thickness. An 250mL bottle will cover around 1,200 square inches of area to a typical decorative thickness.

There is a few different reasons. The first one being the type of gold it is, if it is 14k, or 18k gold the color will be a lighter gold color. It could be because an item is freshly plated and it will change color a little bit as it sits overnight. Another reason could be because there is a lot of iron in the gold and it is depositing onto the surface of an item with the gold and it makes it appear darker. There is a lot of different reasons but these are the most common.

What about white gold?

"White gold" is just a silver-colored alloy of gold with nickel, platinum, or another metal. What you see when you buy a "white gold" ring (such as a wedding ring) is actually Rhodium or Palladium plated. The white gold is what shows through once the plating wears off. Most people think what they're seeing is white gold but the white gold is the alloy underneath. We do offer Rhodium and Palladium plating solutions, which again, is what most people are referring to when they want a white gold.

Great question! Aluminum is very difficult to plate. After being polished or cleaned the surface oxidizes within seconds of coming into contact with the air. We recommend sending the Alimunum to a professional to have Nickel Plated. The color and texture of the substrate will dictate the color and texture of the Gold. Bare aluminum cannot be plated onto with any of our kits. Our kits will plate onto most types of metal, however, trying to plate onto bare aluminum with our kits will not work. This is because aluminum requires a specialized under-plate process that is not suitable for consumer level plating operations. This process must be performed on an industrial level by trained professionals. We do not sell the process or provide support for plating onto unprepared aluminum surfaces. Any attempts to plate onto bare aluminum with our products will not work, please purchase with this in mind. If you have a project that requires plating onto aluminum, you may consider sending the parts to Gold Plating Services to be plated by our technicians. We can provide the required nickel under-plate for a nominal charge. We can then gold plate, or chrome plate your item or return it with the nickel under-plate. After the aluminum has the proper nickel plate it can then be plated with the metal you desire using our Universal or JewelMaster Series kits.

You can use the woods nickel strike, but we recommend the copper strike because you can visually see the item being activated and which makes plating easier.

You would plate the gun in sections. As far as polymer: In order to electroplate something it must have a conductive surface (metal), so the polymer or plastic parts could not be plated unless they are made conductive with a conductive ink or lacquer. Coating plastics with conductive lacquer to electroplate can be quite difficult and have varied results.

The black on AK's (depending on the country of origin) is usually a paint which you can strip or sand off. Yugos and a few other countries use bluing. Then you just polish the steel. Any steel can be polished to a chrome finish, which is what you need to do prior to playing, assuming you want a high luster.

It purely depends on how thick you plate it and how it is taken care of. As you can see, it turns gold within seconds, but that is only an extremely thin layer that would wear off quickly. However, if you plate it for minutes it will get very thick and last a long time (years). If the item weren't handled at all it would last forever. If the item is handled daily and treated roughly it may only last a few years even with an average thickness plate. If you plate it thick it should last a really long time.

Dear Jonathan We used to totally clean the heavy grease from our brand new galils, by tying the tip of the rifle with a string and immersin it several times in super hot soapy water for about a minute, then we rinsed the rifle in two separate containers...Immersion in soapy water, hot then another hot water all in separe containers. You may still need to do some detailed cleaning afterwards.

+Howard Kurtus Thanks for the question. Yes, the same basic process would be followed. Steel is actually more difficult than copper. For plating onto copper the only difference would be using a "Bright Nickel" in the second beaker instead of "Woods Nickel Strike". Within seconds a fully opaque layer of gold is applied, and the longer you plate the thicker it gets - so no, the copper will not show through.

Another thing to note: the pistol MUST be fully disassembled, this service can be performed by a local Gunsmith for a small fee and this serves a double purpose - the pistol must be shipped to us and back to someone with a FFL (Federal Firearms License) which Gunsmiths have. Great question. The gold does "seal" the steel off from exposure to air thus preventing rust and corrosion. However, it must be plated to about 1 micron to achieve this. An alternative option that many people choose is to apply a layer of Bright Nickel prior to gold plating, this produces a "diffusion barrier" that will keep the gun from corroding no matter how thick the gold is.

There are many different ways to get there. In this situation, we simply buffed it on a buffing wheel with red rouge. It can also be chemically stripped. If you search the web there are many resources for how to remove bluing/black finishes.
