After you are done plating an item with gold, what do you do with the leftover liquids? Can they sit for longer periods of time without being used again? Can they even be used again?

If you collect the gold liquid separate from the electrocleaner and activator it can be used again. It will just have less gold content in the leftovers and will take longer to plate with.

The strike plating is too fill in the pores within the substrate's surface its only done on certain materils stainless, brass copper, sometimes aluminum but copper goes onto alumnim then nickel then your final plating such as silver or gold. The stike plating will help improve adhesion and not cause blistering those bubbles that you see is because the pores are gassing out causing the plating to bubble up

Electricity takes the path of least resistance so it's hard to build up material in corners. You could make a small custom anode to get the corners specifically. Powder coating tends to be light in corners as well.

The purpose of this video was to demonstrate the correct way to prepare the metal being plated and also the correct way to do the plating. We finished plating the entire blade (even next to the handle) off camera. The cotton sleeves shown are able to get into nooks and crannies such as the one near the handle. However, if it was a situation where it could not, the kit comes with our "Ultra fine-select Pen Plating Tips" which are more fine of a tip than a Sharpie Marker for doing hard to to get or small areas.

it would've made more sense to show us the knife as you received it by the customer and then the process of polishing, preparing and plating the whole knife to actually show us what a customer's item goes through throughout your service of gold plating it. I know the purpose of this video is to demonstrate the correct way to prepare the metal being plated and the correct way to do the plating. However, as i said, it would've made more to add more purpose to the video. That I think would've made the video more interesting and more satisfying to your future and current customers.

A lot of times these videos come as a need to answer a specific question, such as "How do I properly plate onto stainless steel?" or in this case "I followed all the steps but the gold is splotchy". In electrogalvanization obtaining the nickel plating solution is a painstaking process for chemists (it means decoupling with cathodes lost at a very low current density and is depending on the amount of solution) What invention is it about?

Aluminum can be plated onto but the chemicals used in the process cannot be used on a consumer level so its possible but you would need to get them nickel plated or something before you gold plate them.

Surface Activator is a dilute acid solution. However, the chemical used in this video is called "Woods Nickel Strike", which is a compound of multiple chemicals. It does include acid but it also includes other critcal components as well, such as nickel chloride concentrate.

We sell Woods Nickel Strike on our website. Woods Nickel Strike's purpose is not to wet out the surface per se but it is used as the second step when plating onto steel/stainless steel. Woods makes it possible for the gold to adhere on stainless. Basically it does replace surface activator when plating onto steel, if you want to see it that way.

You could plate an item that has a brush finish but your gold will be as shiny as the part you are plating on. So if the surface is dull then the gold will plate on dull. I hope this helps.

The Universal Chrome can do both but it just depends on what chemical you are using that makes it plate on different metal. Some metals require different solutions to be plated.

Yes, we cleaned it with Toulene and then a little soap and water. You want to remove any of the polishing compound that is left on the surface.

Hi I just bought this kit 2 days ago that was shown in the video, chrome edition. I am getting consistently low amps from my stock pre-soaked gold sleave and its bit. Is it possible for a bit to loose its ability to hold current or something. What could I be doing wrong or may be the symptom of this? The only thing that seems to change the amps of the bit and sleave is the angle that I am rubbing onto the stainless steel. Please get back to me when you can, besides that i love the product.

Hello. Based on the information we have here and how we're interperating it, it doesn't sound like anything is wrong. The amps will only fluctuate when you complete the circuit and begin plating. It will then constantly change slightly as you move, change angles, etc. This is normal. If the plating is working, then it sounds like everything is fine. If it is not working, then we need to evaluate what is being done incorrectly or if there is some sort of issue with the hardware that has developed. Do you mean using an AC Alternating Current? I am not an expert but.. Do Not use Main supply at 110 Volts or 240 Volts unless you want to Kill yourself. An Alternating Current would i think.. Put the Plating On, then take it Off. Then put it On.. then take it Off again, repeating at 50 Hertz , 60Hz or whatever frequency that you're using. I would caution you not to attempt to work with electricity until you've gained a thorough understanding of the science first. Including the lethal dangers.

Why the gel is in a violet color when it’s supposed to be gold? I know it won’t be 100 percent of the content in gold but I never though it was looking other color.

The violet color in the solution is actually the hardeners and brighteners in the solution. Without these, the solution would be water-clear. The gold is in a salt form before being dissolved into the solution. Only once the electrolysis happens does the gold get converted into metallic gold onto the cathode.

This is a common question/comment. The purpose of this project was not to finish the knife. The sole purpose was to demonstrate the proper way to use the chemicals and prep the part using Electrocleaner, Strike and Gold, to get a good deposit. The customer was wanting us to show them how it's done, not do it for them. We sent the knife back and the customer polished everything off and followed the steps we showed to complete the knife.

Yeah you use a lacquer to paint the area thats not supposed to be plated, plate it, then use acetone to remove the lacquer.

I have no problem gold plating stainless especially with woods nickel but does anyone have any tips on how to get gold plating to stay on titanium???? I get it to take the gold but it easily wipes off. I've tried starting with other base metals like nickel and graduate up with no luck on any plating (even the nickel or copper which I also tried) to stick. I know an ION Vac would work but don't have one...lol

Thanks for the great question. Pure titanium is extremely tricky to plate onto and is not something we recommend attempting. It requires a high percentage hydrochloric acid dip and even when done properly it is very tricky. If it is a titanium alloy, you can plate onto it using our TriVal - Acid Gold Strike. The TriVal is better for more difficult to plate alloys.

@@GoldPlatingServices I completely agree. I sometimes am very successful, other times can't get it to hold at all. I'll get it to plate but whether it wants to adhere permanently is another matter. I do work with hydrochloric acid here using it for things like oxidizing to antique my rings made of silver, copper or nickel but haven't tried it as a prep for gold plating titanium which may be a good tip and I'll try today. Do you have a recommendation as to how long you would dip and at what percentage and are you soaking or using electrolysis? As for your TriVal Acid Gold Strike how does that differ or does it to Woods Nickel Strike or is it basically the same thing? I buy and love your products, keep up the training videos, it really helps!

Thank you! We're glad you love it! So are you saying its dull before you even plate it? You said "dull even after polishing and before polishing", not sure if that means you are polishing it AFTER you have gold plated it? You need to perform ALL the polishing you need to achieve the final luster you want prior to gold plating. Do not polish after you have gold plated, especially with our gold this is not necessary. Some peoples gold solution needs polishing after plating, ours does not. If you polish gold it will simply remove it and usually does not help the appearance. Only exception is if you have "burning". With burning, you can clean it up by polishing it with a mixture of baking soda and water made into a paste. This is the only situation where you should ever polish gold. You need to get the piece you want to plate to the shiny luster you desire before plating. Gold plating is the final touch, the "icing on the cake" if you will, so if you prepare the piece good, the gold plating will be good. If its dull before plating, it will be dull after plating. Hope this helps!

Gold is a soft metal, so eventually it will wear down with abrasion. However, the gold itself wont fade without wear. The thicker you apply the gold the longer it will last. We can't be sure if the gold teeth caps you are wondering about can be plated, however if they are metal they probably can be plated. We have done dentures, braces and other similar mouth pieces using this process.

Polishing needs to be done prior to gold plating. Gold is soft and the plating is relatively thin - you do not want to polish it after plating or you can remove it.

Theoretically you could apply how ever many coats as you want. Typically you only apply 1 coat as its not necessary to apply multiple coats. The longer you spend on your first coat the thicker the gold will be. However, if you decided you wanted to add more gold, you could go over it again and again.

Shouldn't do anything to diamonds. Essentially, gold plating works by sending electric current through a metal and that attracts gold particles in the plating solution - diamonds aren't exactly conductive so they shouldn't attract any gold.
