President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. participates in the 24th ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit, alongside fellow Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States and the Republic of Korea, at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Jakarta, Indonesia on September 6, 2023.
Early this year, ASEAN and ROK reaffirmed their commitment to further advance partnership and enhance cooperation during the 10th ASEAN-ROK Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting. The meeting acknowledged the significant progress achieved in ASEAN-ROK cooperation since the previous 23rd ASEAN-ROK Summit, specifically in implementing various areas of cooperation outlined in the ASEAN-ROK Plan of Action (2021-2025).
As of the third year of implementation, approximately 87.5% of the action lines have been addressed, demonstrating substantial cooperation between ASEAN and ROK in their collective efforts towards post-pandemic recovery.
ASEAN also welcomed the ROK’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and the Korean-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative (KASI) which aims to significantly strengthen ASEAN-ROK cooperation. As part of the KASI, the ROK has committed to doubling its annual contribution to the ASEAN-ROK Cooperation Fund by 2027. This increased funding will support a broader range of projects and activities. The cooperation will focus on four (4) key priorities outlined in the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP): maritime cooperation, connectivity, sustainable development and economic cooperation.
Both ASEAN and ROK have agreed to further enhance cooperation in various areas, including trade and investment, digitalization and innovation, energy, tourism, education, disaster management, environment and climate change, public health, smart cities, connectivity, culture and people-to-people exchanges, and capacity building.
