Hi scott, the part 2 is closer to my heart and closer to albums that define thrash metal, thanks for including metal church, viscious rumors, sepultura, laaz rockit, flotsam and jetsam and kreator, as you said some bands are not pure thrash metal bands, so was the case with the debut album of anthrax and metal church, it was some kind of agressive metal, it contained heavy metal, speed metal and thrash metal elements, while anthrax turned to thrash metal since their second album metal church continued to play on the edge of heavy metal and thrash metal, and of course, the debut album of annihilator is certainly better than refresh the demon, thanks, take care and god bless.

Such an amazing collection of Thrash there. I was going to pickup that Laz Rockit on reissued vinyl but its super pricey to get over to NZ. I used to think Sepultura were more death metal inspired especially on the first two releases. Beneath The Remains and the followups are deffinatley more thrashy. I need to get some Dark Angel and Believer in my collection. I am hoping to see Sacred Reich and Violence live in october. Great video mate and love all your thoughts. Have a great weekend😀🤘

I am old enough to remember the very start of Thrash and I had few good mates at our local rock club. All the usual pioneers of the time have been mentioned in both of your videos and please correct me if I am wrong. There has been an omission.... "Venom" fronted by Cronos. (Check out Teachers Pet from Black Metal (1982). Not serious contenders for one of the definatives but they gave us a bloody great laugh pissed up on Newkie Brown Ale. Even though Thrash is not my go-to, i have always wondered why they never seem to get any credit.... hay-ho. i always enjoy your vids Scott and I never fail to check out something new from your lists. These old ears have just discovered the pleasures of Doom and some Death Metal. Perhaps I am open now to go all the way back and give Thrash a go....

Yes. Venom were mentioned in the comments of the first video and while they definitely had a hand in the evolution of thrash I put them in the same camo as Celtic Frost. I would say Dark Angel's 'Time Does Not Heal' as the album that defines thrash. You know thrash metal is about guitar riffs and that album has 246 riffs. 246 riffs in one album. I think that album could easily get in the list.

Celtic Frost definitely had a hand in what became known as black metal but again when they were around in the early 80's there were not all these sub-genres of heavy metal yet. They were heavy metal. Venom were heavy metal. Armored Saint were heavy metal. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were heavy metal. The differences in all these bands sounds can attribute to all the sub-classifications that came down the road IMO.

Glad to see Atrophy, Sacred Reich, COC, Possessed, Dark Angel, Nuclear Assault etc on there. Though as much as I love Nuclear Assault I don't like Game Over, way too much emphases on cutesy hardcore. The Plague (EP after that), Survive and Handle With Care I'd put way above Game Over.

What do you consider the difference between speed Metal and thrash? There’s so many genres of metal it’s kind of hard to separate them all. I’ve always considered Metal Church to be thrash, but regardless what they are they’re fantastic. I saw them open for Metallica in Frankfurt West Germany at the time. Was just after Cliffs accident. They gave Metallica a run for their money.
@nolifetilmetal1
@nolifetilmetal1 3 жыл бұрын
To me it's a very fine line. Speed metal is basically fast heavy metal, usually with clean vocals. Most people would point to Agent Steel as an example of speed metal. Thrash tends to not be just speed but be a little more punk influenced and have harsher vocals, even if just like Zetro, Hetfield or Araya. Sometimes thrash isn't fast at all and is more midpace, but still violent and heavy. Some people point to a difference in guitar/riff style as well and would point to palm-muting. I'm not a guitarist so I can't speak much to that. Again, to me it's a pretty fine line but I stick to speed metal as being traditional heavy metal played fast. Exciter and Raven were kings of that scene IMO.

I witnessed the doors blowing wide open on the Thrash Metal 'movement' in real time, starting with Motorhead, Venom, etc; and at the end of the day, what it culminated into and what ended up defining it for me, was Eternal Nightmare by Vio-lence. Once that album became the standard of excellence in the genre, nothing else that came before, or after it could touch it. If I had to argue against myself, though. Mind Wars by Holy Terror, Endless War by Realm, and I Hate Therefore I Am by Cyclone Temple would vie for the crown.
@nolifetilmetal1
@nolifetilmetal1 3 жыл бұрын
All good choices! I'd say that Dark Angel would put up a fight against Vio-lence for thrash domination. Haha! Regradless, Vio-lence made Part 1, Cyclone Temple made Part 2. Most people would consider Realm to be speed metal but like you, I've always called the thrash. Endless War is brilliant! I'd also agree that Motorhead and Venom, along with Raven, Tank, Exciter, Anvil and others were the roots of what became thrash metal. Cheers!

IMO, I see Speed Metal as more of an "add on" rather than its own sub-genre. Its kind of like a Mustang GT or a 3000 GT. Both are GT's but different vehicles. I believe speed metal can be in thrash, power metal and straight up heavy metal. For example, I would label Anthrax's AIR, Iron Maiden's Be Quick or Be Dead, and Hammerfall's Where the Dragon Lies Bleeding all as speed metal even though they are different sub-genres. Hope that makes sense.

Not all thrash bands play straight thrash throughout their albums or stay the course album for album. I think its great for bands to play fast or slow things down a bit and still be considered as a thrash band or having a thrash album. I appreciate bands like Celtic Frost, Exciter and Metal Church who all had speed and aggression on their albums but were never really a straight-up thrash unit. They may not be pure thrash on every track but they can still be considered as a contender since the style is involved in their albums and sound, even though they tackled other forms of metal on the same album. Many thrash bands cite them as influences or forerunners of the scene. I love the speed and aggression thrash metal has but at the same time it's nice to see a band branch out on an album and include a variety of metal influences to keep the album interesting. There were no wrong choices in any album you showed. There are just different opinions of what album should be labelled as a defining thrash release which makes for a good debate when so many people are influenced by so many different releases. At least no one picked a band like Limp Bizkit, that would have been means for an ugly fight.

I agree with your opinions on a lot of what defines thrash metal. I would never consider Celtic Frost thrash metal, okay maybe Vanity/Nemesis. Celtic Frost were pretty much first wave Black Metal. I don't consider Exciter thrash metal...they are speed metal. I don't consider Metal Church Thrash Metal, but they do come close especially on their first album. Mike Howe's band Heretic was more Thrash Metal. Honestly when I go back and listen to the first Metallica and Anthrax albums those are almost more speed metal than thrash. I don't even regard Death Angel's Act 3 as a thrash metal album. Probably the closest song on that album to thrash is Seemingly Endless Time.

Right time, right place is correct, growing up with Kreator, Slayer and other bands like Living Death, Necronomicon, Darkness, Exhumer, Paradox, Holy Moses, Assassin, Death Angel, Angel Dust, Forbidden, Tankard...priceless....trying to keep track on Metal Genres and Subgenres or understand what album belongs into which box....not so much in my opinion. You could poll 100,000 thrash lifers and come up with the most exhaustive list of “best” albums ever, but you’ll still have half the herd pissing and moaning saying it’s “wrong” because their own personal taste isn’t reflected perfectly in it. Subjective vs objective is an easy concept to understand. It takes away from the fun and it’s ridiculous that you have to give so many disclaimers continually explaining such a basic concept to those people.

It seems like that is more about including as much bands as possible in the list. IIf it is really about the definition of thrash I, personally, just don't see the point of including such bands as Cyclone Temple. it's not even that we can take any of the hundreds of good bands of that time and put it in but that the a lot of albums defining the genre were released much earlier than 1991. Just my imho.

I can absolutely respect your opinion. If this had been my personal list I don't know that Cyclone Temple would have made it. Despite that, I still would have included Vengeance - Human Sacrifice (1988) as an album that defines thrash metal for me. That album had a huge impact on me, and many other bands for that matter, despite it not being a mainstream album. However, this list was compiled from those who commented on the Part 1 video. Oddly enough, the comment posted on the top of that video complained that the "typical" answers were "products of the media" as opposed to real examples of "defining the trash sound." Also, it doesn't matter what year an album was recorded. Frankly, I think that Hirax - New Age of Terror is a GREAT example of an album that defines the genre and that wasn't recorded till the 2000's.

@@nolifetilmetal1 Well, I did not want to say in any way that defining albums or bands should be "mainstream". Of course not. In general.and especially personally. It may well be a demo from some obscure band. or , of course, Vengeance or anything. But nobody can claim that big and famous bands are "media product" by default. That's nonsense. It may be sometimes but as a rule. I lived in the USSR where there wasn't any musical media at all but everyone knew Metallica or Iron Maiden or Deep Purple or Depeche Mode. Also one can't put his personal opinions above everyone's else. At any case and always, I mean. Personally, for instance, I don't like Exodus much but I'llI always say that they one of the biggest and defining bands in thrash. In the same way I cannot put , some less known bands, say, Cyclone or Deathwish or Apocalypse (this is all just for example) higher than anything just because I love them. As for year of records, no any disrespect for Hirax or anybody. Yeah, a brand new band may record an album in 2020, taking all the best from the genre and it really can be perfect and defining. I don't mean to say that would be worse than classical works of 80s, it may be even better technically , lyrically and so on. But my point is that works reflect the zeitgeist, they're original and later works are not, no matter how good they are. That's all I wanted to say. Just my opinion, of course)

100% disagree with CELTIC FROST specifically "MORBID TALES" not falling in thrash metal.... come on bro, intro+into the crypts of rays, visions of mortality, morbid tales... suicidal winds! Punk riffs right there my friend... fast pace heavy punkish influenced songs mentioned above... other CELTIC FROST albums later definitely not thrash metal but if you disagree with MORBID TALES & To Mega thereon.... for being an old school dude, shame on you! Punk and Oi!... support to Thrash metal

I disagree that any Celtic Frost album “defines thrash metal.” Never would deny that they had thrash elements, thrash songs and were a huge influence to thrash metal, just like they were to black metal. For me Celtic Frost defied those genre boxes, aka way stepping outside the box.

To me, Exodus - Bonded By Blood will always be the purest form of Thrash Metal ever, it is the album that I would give to anyone that would want to understand what Thrash is, it's pure and raw Thrash and nothing else with no stopping signs and not one single bad song. If I had to pick unsung gems here, bands or albums that were not included in both of these (great) lists, it would be Artillery - By Inheritance, Vio-Lence - Oppressing The Masses, Slammer - The Work Of Idle Hands, Rigor Mortis - Rigor Mortis, Dyoxen - First Among Equals, Megadeth - Killing Is My Business, Exodus - Fabulous Disaster and Shah - Beware, most of these are criminally underrated imo
