I bought a Fucata on accident when searching for an Orbifolia. I keep her a ft away from a North window next to my humidifier surrounded by ferns and she is giving me so much love. While all my other calatheas are hating me. She's my most beautiful one. I bought a tiny burle marx baby with two leaves and it had been struggling. I finally gave up on it and put the root node with no leaves left into a mossy terrarium and now it has three leaves.

I fell in love with this calathea when I first saw it and didnt know it's a Zebrina! I gave solely all my love, care and humidity yet it was still droopy and dying so I gave up and placed it outside together with my other plants. The next morning I was shocked it grew healthy again and even water it w/ tap water together with my other plants! My zebrina drove me crazy yet i still adore it so much ❤️

@@AddyBeez I’ve found the single best way to keep one alive is to keep it close to a humidifier, and out of the sun. In nature they thrive underneath tree canopies, and receive VERY little sunlight, mine has been so happy!

So I finally know what type of calathea I have! Picturata argentea! I bought it because I thought the leaves were pretty and I had no idea how fickle calathea are! After a few months of frustrating research and almost killing him a few times he is now happy in my bathroom with bright indirect light, a pebble tray of filtered water, weekly soil moisture checks, watering with filtered water and very diluted fertilizer, and increased humidity in that room. Yeah. Somehow each new leaf is so much more rewarding when you have to work that hard for it!

Can you please do a new video on what different calathea leaf conditions are telling you. For example, new leaf growth coming in smaller and lower down to the base of the plant, lower leaves yellowing, curling and dying off, (I'm noticing this after watering, not sure if it's a coincedence) when it's normal old leaf loss and when it's a watering issue. New leaves coming in with see through edges which eventually crisp. Not producing new leaves at all or rarely. As you can tell i am having several issues with all my calathea! There's not a great deal of info out there on these issues so i thought you might be able to help! Thank you

I love these plants! Great video!! I have 5 calathea plants. ... I found that they hate to dry out. ... so I bought those self watering bulbs. ... on my larger medallion I have a glass bulb and on the smaller one some smaller bulbs that are platic i found on amazon. You xare right about humidity! One more thing.... my first one i forgot to water it died....but I read somewhere it will grow back from its rhizomes and it has grown 2 new stems. ...thanks for the video

Wow! Your collection is gorgeous!! I'll definitely keep this video as a reference. I can't keep up w/ their humidity requirements, especially in the winter when my prayer plant really took a beating. My little Dottie is doing fine right now out of it's terrarium, but come fal,l it's going back in there. It makes you wonder how they manage to survive in the wild - unless their natural habitat is a swamp, lol!

Such a good point! Once I learned that some of them live in actual cloud forests (montane environments)-- well. Not exactly easy to replicate in my area. I'm so glad that your Dottie is doing well. 😊 Oh! My Aglaonema is putting out a new leaf, or trying to, but I do think I got the watering wrong because its lowest leaf is definitely going to turn yellow. Do you think a terracotta pot might be better for it or would that dry it out too fast? The yellowing could be from acclimation/shipping stress but I'm not sure.

@@AddyBeez After one died from root rot, I propagated a stem in water and recently transitioned it to soil. It's doing great, so I'm definitely moving it to terracotta as soon as those roots are firmly established in the nursery pot. I'm hoping it will lower the chance of it getting rot again. That plant was never healthy and it hung on for a year before it's rapid decline, so at least they are hearty!

Surprisingly, my rufibarba is one of my most problematic. I was having problems with my warcewitzi over the winter but I just cut it down to the soil level, placed it in a self watering Lechuza pot and substrate and it has grown quite a few new great leaves. The beautiful louisae now has 3 leaves. I chopped off all the leaves except one and totally just watered it and waited for it to die. Apparently, she wants to live! You have a great collection! My easiest Calathea is the C. lancifolia. It has not given me any humidity issues and is quite beautiful!

Oh--this is good to know! 😊 I need to figure something out--I am pretty sure the roots are damaged on mine. It put out a new rhizome--or I should say that it put out new growth on a rhizome that seemed to recover but the leaves all show root damage. A few people having been mentioning how well calathea do in Leca and I am trying to work up the nerve to try it/research enough to know how to get started. I am going to have to look more into Lechuza pots, too, thanks for the tip. Some of the species that get water stressed easily may do better in one!

I always enjoy seeing what calatheas that other people have....thank you for sharing your collection. The only problem that I have had is with my white fusion....I had it about 8 ft.away from the window, it looked all droopy. I took the risk and moved it to about 3ft. from the window and it seems to love it. I thought that the white leaves would burn, so far so good. If you want those 3 calatheas to drop their law suit....you might want to consider getting a table size water fountain and only use distilled water in it. My fountain was only 27.00 from Amazon.

I love Calatheas too!! Recently got the rattle snake ones and I think they are likely to be group A. However I live in a tropical country - Singapore so I guess that contributes to the easier maintenance here for most of the calatheas.

For anyone who doesn't know. Essential oils are photo-toxic. So when a plant is introduced to sunlight while it has Essential oils such as neem oil. It causes chemical burns. This is true for people as well. Thats why it's so important to dilute it.

Great video! I'd love to see an update. I bought an orbifolia as my first calathea, and one of my first tropical, not knowing how much or a diva they were. It's alive but with crispy leaves when there was humidity stress and when I used tap water.

Completely the opposite way round from me! With houseplants, I think, the most important factor is the nature of 'house'. See - you seem to be in a 'new build' so you don't have the damp and dingy thing that I have with my three hundred year old stone cottage. People can talk about window direction, window distance, latitude and precise humidity needs but it comes down to some plants like old houses and some plants like new houses. Just about every video I see, online, about houseplants is from somebody who is raising them in a recently built house. All of that advice, I now realise, I have to put through my own algorithm. Apart from using room temperature collected rain water - that's pretty much a good thing across the board. My Calatheas all seem to hate being top watered, too, so I've got all mine in self watering pots with chutes down to the reservoir and water level indicators. I try to keep the indicator levels at about half full.

I have a mosaica (group b). Bought it on a whim. It’s doing great. I don’t do a thing to it. I have found that if a plant likes it’s spot - it will do well. If it doesn’t like its home - you will have problems from day 1.

Great vid, you're my go - to channel for calathea care! After a year long battle with recurrent spidermites on my Whitestar, I just gave up and she is now buried in my compost tip! I only have one calathea left and that's a Fusion White. Got it as a 5 leaf plantlet about a year ago and it's thriving! Still a small plant but about three times the size it was. 👍 I'd love a warsceweckii but they are very hard to find for me.

Oh, I understand. Spider mites can just decimate a plant so quickly. I'm glad that your Fusion White is doing well! 😊 Impressive growth!! Mine just seems to replace its leaves without growing bigger though maybe this year. Maybe. I feel like some calatheas are just impossible to get where I am--or, it will at least take a couple of years for them to get on market. The Warscewiczii is honestly so lovely and I have treated it so poorly. Had I done a better job from the beginning, it would look quite different now.

@@AddyBeez you won't believe it but I found an absolute beauty of a warscewiczii at IKEA today! 6" pot with three huge plants in it, 45cm tall (I think that's about 18") for 10 euros!!! (12$US) Happy dance time, I tell you! 😁 Not a blemish on it but, as usual, it's in quarantine on my dining room table. I've never brought pests home on an IKEA plant but better safe than sorry! So happy 😊

Beautiful collection! The only calathea I have is a medallion and prior to moving to my current home it was doing fine (popped a lot of new pretty leaves in janurary!). But now that I have a new space it having trouble adjusting and I am so sad. The humidity is in the 40% and being I only have one calathea I wasn’t keen on bringing out my humidifier again but I think I might have to. Calathea are so beautiful but you do have to commit more to it then other plants

Humidifiers, where I am, come with a warning to use distilled or other types of filtered (for example: demineralized) water because the process of releasing the vapor into the air can also release minerals from water into the air, among other concerns. However, I am certainly not an expert! But I do follow the EPA's recommendation to use distilled water to be safe. The results are worth the efforts and very satisfying. I wanted to grow these for a long time but my climate would not allow it. Do you favour the use of a humidifier or an evaporative cooler? Does a humidifier create mold in your room?

Not sure about anyone else, but depending on how warm your room stays and the type of calathea you could get away with misting it two or three times a day instead of using a humidifier. That's what I do, and my white fusion is super super happy.

I've had a few of those some easier some advanced (medallion, picturata crimson, dottie and zebrina) but all of them died. My musaica is around 6 years old. And even though we had our ups and downs it outlived all of them and it's doing pretty good. Currently it is sprouting 7 new leaves and I'm soo proud of it! (It's one of the first plants that I ever purchased)

I dont have a humidifier, so l'm using my Oil diffuser, with No oil in it, for the time being. So far my plant has doubled in size, its Spring down here in Australia at the moment. I just baught a Rosie at Lows and i was able to diagnose its leaves with hard water damage. Wish me luck in its rehoming process. No more tap water for Rosie. What im most concerned about now is if I need to repot it to start fresh with distilled water.

I have repotted immediately in the past but have since held off to give the plant a chance to acclimate to its new environment (so as long as there is nothing wrong with the soil). Starting with a distilled water now that it is in your home will help flush the soil and in my experience, it has helped to mitigate the need to repot right away. Good luck with your new Rosie! :)

You say humidity stress, but you have a humidifier. Are you around 50-60 %? And those need more humidity than that? My favourite is the Mokoyana, I love mine. It's just easy, looks like a painter made it, perfect leaves and I love the back and forth movement it makes every day.

Yes, a lot of the humidity stress came from spending time in lower humidity levels before being in an area with the humidifier. I would say very few need higher humidity than 50-60%, most do well with that, but once the damage is there, it is a matter of waiting for it to grow out.

I think I am pretty lucky to live in a tropical country (Indonesia).. As long as calathea are placed in bright indirect light & close to other plants, they are pretty happy. We have no problem with humidity and I noticed calathea just love humid place & the soil must also humid too.. I have black dottie, pink cynthia & fasciata.. I'd love to have more but the prices are so expensive here 😂

I am having the same issue with my calthea freddie. I just tried to trim back the dead roots and repotted. Can you go into more depth in another video about how you rescued your plant what exactly you did and what you mean regrew leaf by leaf? Help!

Would you please share your soil mixture? You said you made your own mix. I live in South Florida and moisture and humidity are not a big issue but I don't know what type of soil to use. I'm just beginning!

In the last six months or so, I haven't been able to make up my own mix due to trouble getting the materials. What I'm using right now is about half of Sungro's Black Gold potting soil and about half perlite. I do tend to play around with the soil composition a lot though, except I always make sure it is heavily focused on aeration and quick drainage.

How rootbound can they be before you really have to repot them? I bought some and their roots already do touch the bottom of the pot, but last time I had them standing on the balcony for repotting, their leves curled up after just an hour. So I wanted to wait a little longer for better (mostly warmer/more humid) weather conditions).

Mine all have pretty delicate root systems, so I don't have to pot them up too often. The rhizomes grow out horizontally though so that is usually when I know they need a repot--when new growth starts coming up close to the rim of the pot. It is hard to know if a plant will take a repot well or not. Unless I am having soil problems, I try to keep the roots completely in tact by taking all of the soil around the roots with the plant when I repot, so that the roots aren't disturbed. It is more like carefully transitioning soil in one large piece ,that happens to have a plant inside of it, from one pot to another. I am not sure that I am explaining this very well--it isn't always easy to do, or even possible, but that has worked pretty well for me.

i always enjoy watching your video and in between, i able to learn some tips from you. For me, white fusion is definitely a pain for me! Just when all the leaves wilted and I was about to dispose it, I found new growth! Hopefully it would thrive and able to adapt in my house. I have issues with Makoyana, too. Used to water with tap water then even got new one with filtered water still not able to help. Im getting 3rd one with distilled water and hopefully it would stay. My dottie on the other hand quite an easy one, I used to water one with tap water on daily basis until I realised it was a big no and changed to filtered water and finally distilled water and also reduced the frequency of watering to 2 times a week, it just doing fine!

You know--I wish I knew more about how growing conditions in nurseries affect a plant's needs/requirements later. And--I wish I knew a bit more about how my environment specifically impacts them, because I have noticed that across species, some can tolerate purified water while others will only tolerate distilled. They seem like such a small distinctions but can be really confusing! I am glad your Dottie is doing well! 😀

There are so many different calathea species--and hybrids and cultivars seem to pop up all of the time now! I try to keep them between 50-60% relative humidity. Sometimes, they get up into the 70% range, which is fine so long as I have enough air circulation so that moisture doesn't accumulate on the surface of the leaves.

Do you have any experience with the beauty star? I have one and am not able to get the pink stripes on the leaves. There are some white stripes on some leaves, others grow with no white stripes at all. May it be a light issue? For the rest it is doing quite well. BTW great video and amazing calathea collection!

Hi, Clara! I don't have a Beauty Star, though I have a few closely related calatheas. The thing about the pinstripe calatheas seems to be is that their appearance can change over time in terms of color/pattern (some of the pinstripe calatheas lose their stripes altogether as they reach full maturity). I have heard that light plays a role and I have also heard that maturity plays a role, too. Did it ever have pink stripes? I am not sure there is a definitive answer here but I do know that, in general, the appearance of a calathea can change greatly over time.

Thanks for this video. I would agree with zebrina and white fusion being in the advance category. I wish I knew that before buying them. I am a new plant mom and to have those 2 as a new plant owner was quite challenging. I use distilled water, humidifier and they still didn’t do well. I think they ended up suffering water stress (overwatering). I didn’t even water it frequently, but I think when I watered it, I used too much water. They need the perfect amount of water. Not too much, not too little, just right. Like Goldie locks and the 3 bears 😅😂

That is a perfect description! 😊 The care is tricky, especially because it's hard to know what they were used to at the nursery. Some seem to be easy to care for and others--well. Not so much!

It is tricky getting that perfect balance of water (and I also find they ironically like a lot of aeration as well. I've switched all my calatheas to self-watering and it's made both me and them a lot happier.
