25 Chemistry Experiments in 15 Minutes | Andrew Szydlo | TEDxNewcastle

TEDx Talks

5 жыл бұрын

Whacky colour changes, magic disappearing water, blowing up dustbins, clouds of steam, thunder air explosions. Are you ready to fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ‘explosive’ journey?
In his talk, Andrew aims to promote chemistry as the science of remarkable changes, which are often overlooked yet so important in our everyday life. And he does it brilliantly by performing an incredible series of 25 experiments in 15 minutes, totally amazing the audience (who rewards him with a long and deserved standing ovation)!
Andrew Z. Szydło is an internationally acclaimed chemistry teacher. But he’s definitely not the typical chemistry teacher you would expect…
He holds a PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science from UCL, and is an expert on the history of alchemy (his 1994 book ‘Water Which Does Not Wet Hands’ is considered to be the standard reference work on the Polish alchemist Michael Sendivogius.)
But his polymath spirit extends further: he’s a violin, bugle and accordion player, as well as a professional photographer. Throughout the years Andrew has wowed audiences all around the world with his pyrotechnical approach to teaching and demonstrating chemical sciences on stage and has appeared many times on TV. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

He used to teach chemistry at my school and he was known as a bit crazy. He used to explode helium balloons multiple times a year. We'd be sitting in a lesso , hear a loud bang and everyone knew it was Szydlo. Not sure if he still teaches there but he was definitely one of the most loved teachers. He used to call everyone "old boy". He wasn't actually the best teacher but it's not hard to see why, he was so excited by what he was teaching he often strayed from the syllabus.

This is so freaking awesome. I love chemistry, just never had the opportunity to expand on the love for it. I am lucky enough to work at a high school as a custodian, and one of the teachers is nice enough to let me know when the students are doing something that day she deems as "cool chemistry" and allows me to sit it on the class and even join in on occasion when there so happens to be an odd number of students that day and she needs an additional person to pair a student with.

Crazy how brilliant minds work, it's like his head was full of so many ideas and he couldn't pace himself to explain his ideas he just did them and commented over his actions which is a neat way to keep the audience focused, every second that passed you asked yourself, what is next? I love how he breaks down the process and yet a few people who watch this video still maybe confused but those who've already taken chemistry, you think the explanations to why is so rudimentary or basic.

But, no, instead we had to have this boring lecture about what we will see this year (and since we knew nothing of what he meant at the time was pretty much useless)... That's the difference between a wise teacher and a boring old fart. I got a 49% in chemistry that year... only to get a 89% on my final school year, thanks to a woman chemist teacher who was extraordinary, kind, funny and very knowledgeable. There are a couple problems. Without a really well equipped lab no principal would allow an open flame on the scale of burning metal/oxidizer mix that are flash powders, and igniting explosive or even flammable gasses in a balloon.his (and mine) favourite part of the show would not be allowed at most schools. You'll have to make due with a small piece of sodium in water.
