Of all the MANY TED TALKS I have watched this British gentleman chemist has ABSOLUTELY fascinated me not only with his chemistry demonstrations but with his high energy output, his ability to multitask, his mannerisms, Brit vernacular, and all I was able to absorb in less than 16 minutes. Plus the topic was not that of dealing with death, disease, violence or anything negative. I want to get a quart of liquid nitrogen. Shouldn't be too difficult as it's not a controlled substance, doesn't seem to be a component of anything illegal or immoral. First use would be re: flash freezing perishable food. Then on to replicating one or two things done with this OUTSTANDING video using safety glasses, gloves and a friend to video the endeavour. Again; this TED TALK was the best.

If you want to flash freeze things (you don't want to eat afterwards) you can get some dryice and put it in ethanol. Liquid nitrogen is actually quite hard to get and you'll need a proper container for it so it doesn't all boil away until you got it home

Do they not get these in chemistry class? Chemistry teachers are supposed to do these and many others for their students. Then again if you take chemistry in college.
@onewomanslife6 жыл бұрын
@@cbernier3 While I am much older and took chemistry many years ago- my five kids got nothing as charming and interesting as this presentation. Chemistry was taught with such a focus on abstractions and presented with such boredom that there is little wonder that no one wanted to pursue it. I had a math prof for master's stats who helped me understand that it all applied to the real world. I got an A even though I had believed that I was not good at math. I now believe that our very finest teachers should be teaching at earlier stages than university. What I remember of my high school chemistry is that my teacher drowned when his car went into a canal after an accident and the electrics failed so that he could not get out. His replacement was a sour puss.

Best Ted talk I have seen yet. From professional to mad scientist, all the while entertaining. This, ladies and gentlemen is how you get young minds interested in complex understanding. Why schools are so boring is beyond me, I have learned from these talks that you can make anything interesting/fun/engaging if you just relay the information in a light and simple way. If I had this guy as a teacher, I would have been at the front of the class instead of the back sleeping.
