WHAT? NO ENDS? Yup! You heard me! Learn how to do my revolutionary technique that I call “Continuous” Overlay Mosaic Crochet (or COM for short), where there are virtually NO ENDS to weave in! You’ll learn the secrets for how to do this new Overlay Mosaic Crochet technique including how to begin & finish rows without all those pesky ends, how to make my special stitch: the Anchored double crochet (Adc) to eliminate gaps on the back of your work and where to insert your hook for successful Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects without all those ends!

To calculate the extra yardage you’ll need to make your Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects with my COM technique with NO ENDS, multiply the width of the rows in the pattern by the number of rows in each color. For instance, if the project is 36” wide (1 yard) and the project has a total of 180 rows (90 rows in each of 2 colors), you’ll need an extra 90 yards of each of the 2 colors to make your project with the COM technique. That’s not bad considering the fact that you won’t have all those ends on the left and right edges of your project to deal with!
Note: My 2 new Overlay Mosaic Crochet blanket patterns listed above already include the extra yardage in the materials list, so you won’t need to calculate it for these Mosaic blankets!

I can see myself using this method for a smaller project. But for a larger blanket or something like that, I think I would end up using more yarn than I'd want by carrying it through each row. Thanks for sharing the idea!

You're very welcome! I love sharing what I've learned about crochet to help others! And I love not having all those ends in my Overlay Mosaic Crochet! Yes. This technique uses more yarn. However, if you typically crochet a double border on a blanket, you use more yarn for that. I think this technique would actually use less yarn than a double border does. And as you said, it would be great for smaller projects! I hope you enjoy using this technique for your smaller overlay mosaic crochet projects. Happy crocheting!

Came across your video looking for patterns. When I was 6 my Grams taught me to crochet... when changing colors this is how she taught me to do it. She referred to it as a color switchback which her mother taught her to do. I’ve been doing it this way for 56 years now. It’s nice to finally know the name of this method. Thank you for posting this

You're very welcome! Thank you for your comment. However, I'm a little confused. Have you been carrying the unused color across the row from the end to the beginning to use it again at the beginning of the next row of that color in regular crochet projects, or in Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects? Or do you make your color changes the way I make them in my video #37 for changing colors when working 1-row stripes? I invented this method for changing colors in Overlay Mosaic Crochet a few years ago to avoid all the tails at the beginning and end of each row when doing Overlay Mosaic Crochet. I named my technique Continuous Overlay Mosaic (COM) Crochet just this year. I haven't seen anyone use this technique for regular crochet (not Overlay Mosaic Crochet) in the 45+ years I've been crocheting and it's not in any crochet books that I have (and I have a lot of crochet books!). I look forward to your reply so I can learn more! What country are you from? I'm in the US. I know that many other countries have fabulous, creative crochet skills and techniques!

@@TheCrochetArchitect My Grams taught me to do it when doing a two color yarn mosaic set of crocheted Apache tears pot holders for my moms birthday. She ran the thread back (She called it a color switchback) and then she crocheted over it so it was a constant front side crochet without thread hanging. Her mom (Ma Julie) taught her to do it and Grams taught me. She said that the only time to cut the yarn each time was when tassels were needed. She also did it when she made simple single or double crochet blankets or in her crocheted cotton thread curtains. Ma Julie taught all 5 of her girls to do it. My cousin Cindy and I are the only ones left that crochet in the family and we both do it. I hope this comment better explained my first comment. I’m sorry I’m still recovering from 6 weeks of Covid 19 and I’m sorry my comment was confusing.

I wish I had found this video sooner! It would have saved me weeks of work. I was working on a patchwork blanket with several individual mosaics stitches together with the ends hidden on the backside. I thought I'd crochet a back panel to hide all the ends on the back, and once I finished, I realized it would be too heavy and it wouldn't be as functional. I spent so much time trying to figure out what I was going to do and trying to cover up all the ends. Had I known about this, my blanket would have looked so much neater. I'm so excited to try this with future mosaics! Thank you so much for sharing this technique! You are a gem! 💎

You are awesome!!! I am new to mosaic crochet after crocheting 60+ years. Love it! Am on my third in-the-round Apache Tears zippered purse. I didn't like how much thicker the worked over color change tails made that part of the piece. My solution on this biggest purse is to make the tails long enough so that the two tails meet! I tie a tight double knot to keep the tails from pulling loose later. Problem solved! I KNOW I would not have thought to apply that method to a flat piece! Now I will, thanks very much to your inventive mind and patient, concise teaching! I am your newest subscriber!

How much more yarn does this method use as opposed to 'inset' (not overlay) crochet? It seems to me that inset would use more yarn than your COM method. Also because you have to make an envelope border this looks like it uses more yarn than your method.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how the yarn usage compares between my COM Overlay method and the Inset method. I've never done a trial comparison. However, I think my COM method uses less yarn that adding a double border (and it takes less time than adding a double border) because you only add the width of each row for the carried yarn less the usual 4" - 6" tails at the beginning and end of each row. Adding a double border uses quite a lot of yarn!

Hi Susan, How are you? I can’t believe it’s been 7 months since I came across your channel. I am Just about to create a mosaic scarf, so I’m back here to get a refresher on the beginning and end, using the COM and ADC technique. I started off doing charts and samples of my designs, but last 3 I have done blanket patterns. ( I also have link on my patterns to your channel) I used the border stitch beginning and end, then worked the ADC in between, but because I’m doing a scarf height wise with mosaic design, I don’t want to have all the ends, or have to do a border🙈 so this is the perfect project for me to try the COM technique, looking forward to trying this😊

I agree that my COM technique is PERFECT for crocheting Overlay Mosaic Crochet scarves with short rows so you won't have all the ends to cover up (plus it will actually save you yarn because the 2 ends on each row would typically be longer in total than carrying the yarn across the width of the scarf). I love the thoughts you put into this video. I have a question regarding the beginning stitch of the row being an anchored double crochet. Does it always have to be this particular stitch to encase the yarn? I am seriously thinking of trying this. Thanks for any advice. I was wondering if the pattern you working on doesn’t call for a double crochet could use another stitch?
@TheCrochetArchitect

Thanks for your kind words, Annette. If you are working on an Overlay Mosaic Crochet project with regular drop down dc, they don't encase the yarn. The anchored dc will encase the yarn. However, I just came out with a new Mosaic Crochet video yesterday using a Spike Sc instead of an anchored dc or drop down dc. The Spike SC uses less yarn than the dc and it encases the yarn, just like the anchored dc (almost the same). However, I wouldn't use more than one Spike SC in a row because it "loosely" encases the yarn. The anchored dc encases the yarn completely. You don't have to start the row with an anchored dc. I just like to do that so the edge is the same color as the few rounds of sc edging that I'm going to work afterward so there is less of the contrasting color to peek through the first round of the edging. By the way, some styles of mosaic crochet are interchangeable. If you purchase a pattern in one style of mosaic crochet, you can sometimes use a different style of mosaic crochet to make your project almost the same (this doesn't necessarily apply to inset mosaic worked with 2 rows of each color, though). I hope this helps. Happy Mosaic Crocheting!

For a scarf or even a pillowcase, the additional yarn used this way is pretty negligible! For a blanket, it's obviously substantial, but as you say, the time saved is totally worth it anyway. I've been doing yarn carrying before, but your method for tying it off first is brilliant and makes it so much more neat and secure!

@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
Rutcheli, Thanks for your comment and your questions. Yes. This technique works with bigger projects like blankets. You'll carry the yarn across each row from end to beginning. I used this technique with the 2 blankets that I designed and crocheted. It worked great! You just have to remember to adjust the carried yarn before starting each row so it isn't too loose or too tight underneath the stitches. You can measure the last row to make sure the carried yarn isn't too tight, if that helps. Carrying the yarn across eliminates the ends on each row and the need to either cover the ends with a double border or turn them into fringe. It does use more yarn, but if you normally cover your ends with a double border, you'd probably use less yarn carrying it across than you would with crocheting the back of the double border. If you'd like to see the 2 blankets that I made/designed with this technique, the links to those patterns are in the video description. Happy COM crocheting to you!

I am pretty new to mosaic overlay and wanted to know if this will work for every partern? Also the ADC can that always be your first stitch of every row without changing a pattern?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
Kelly, My COM technique can be used on all Overlay Mosaic Crochet patterns. However, most designers add a border stitch at the beginning and end of every row that will be covered up by the double border. If you want to work one of those patterns with my COM technique, simply remove (don't work) those 2 border stitches (1 at the beginning and 1 at the end of each row). So basically, work 2 less foundation chains and 2 less stitches in those patterns (you can also cross those border stitches out on the charts, too). The Adc can be the first stitch of every "other" row (you can't work an Adc into an Adc: the Adc has to be worked into a sc in the previous row). I use an Adc as the first stitch of every other row a lot in my Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects (blankets and scarves). The first/last Adc can also be covered up by a sc in the edging (usually the same color as the first/last Adc in the rows). I hope this help! Welcome to the wonderful world of Mosaic Crochet! Susan

I HATE having knots joining my yarn. Even with other methods I just CAN'T figure out how to switch my colors to be EXACTLY where they should be so you don't have your previous color carrying over to the next row. With a WHOLE project using this new technique, such as a blanket you would be using ALOT of yarn carrying it over BUT is it somewhat equal to WASTED yarn by having to clip or sew in all those ends?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
Sara, The extra yarn used with this technique isn't as much as you might think. The extra yarn used in each row is the difference between the width of the row and the length of the 2 ends/tails that you usually have in Overlay Mosaic Crochet. So if your blanket is 40" wide and your tails would be 6" long each, the extra yarn used on each row would be about 28" (40" - 12"). You won't have all those tails to weave in with my COM technique, as well. It uses much less yarn than if you were going to crochet a double border to encase/hide all the tails. I hope this helps. Happy crocheting to you!

First, I love all of your Overlay Mosaic techniques and tricks. However, I tried to save a little yarn and crocheted over a 5" tail at the right and left side. It worked okay, but after about 5 rows I notice a "wave" in the project, so I went back to carrying the yarn all the way across. Question: What are the concerns with doing a large project (other than the amount of extra yarn) and carrying the yarn across? Thank you so much for sharing your techniques.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, Phyllis! I'm glad you're enjoying my Overlay Mosaic Crochet videos! My biggest concern with carrying the yarn all the way across when using my COM technique is adjusting the tension of the carried yarn before crocheting with it again 2 rows later. If you get it too tight, it'll pull in the width of your project. If you get it too loose, it may make the project get wider! Sometimes I use a yard stick to measure the width on each row so I know it's not getting narrower or wider. But like you said, it doesn't make the edges get wavy because of only working over a 5" tail at each end. I also find it makes the project a little stronger because of the extra yarn being carried. I tend to use a slightly larger hook so it doesn't get too thick/dense with the carried yarn, too. I hope this is helpful for you.

I'm triyng to find out how to carry on the yarn when I have like 15 DC's in s row... Where shoukd you hide the carry along yarn? Probably above when you link them? In the first step???
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
Sabine, The best way to hide the carried yarn is to work my Anchored DC (Adc), which eliminates the gap on the back when working many dc in a row AND the carried yarn. Here's a link to that video where I show in depth how to work the Adc stitch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5e1p5maeLWYfKc. You can actually see me demonstrate the Adc in this video (the COM video), starting at the 8:06 minute time. So if you have 15 DC's in a row, then you'd work 15 Adc in a row instead of the dc's. Those Adc will cover/hide the carried yarn and eliminate the gap that would form on the back when only working dc. I hope this makes sense and helps! Happy Mosaic Crocheting to you!

I agree that this technique uses more yarn. However, if you normally add a double border, you won't be using more yarn at all because my COM technique doesn't require a double border. Hi Susan, Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us. To date I have done 2 double border mosaic crochet afghans. That tally almost ended at one - I HATED that dang border so much. It truly almost put me off mosaic crochet forever. For my second project I tried several other suggestions for dealing with the double border, each with a similarly disappointing ease of execution. Then I came across a video here on KZbin called "Mosaic Crochet. How to hide tails as-you-go, tips and tricks" by BebaBlanket and decided to try her suggestions for cutting my ends and weaving in the tails as I worked. (I've done several crochet projects that involve carrying a second strand of yarn across a project, encasing the carried yarn within the stitches, so that technique was a comfortable, familiar one.) Still, my interpretation of the enclosing of the carried yarn left unwelcome bits peeking through on the drop down double crochet stitches. I resigned myself to declaring those pesky bits simply 'unique design elements'. However, this KZbin video of yours popped up on one of my Facebook timeline feeds and I had to check it out. Now I have to admit I'm a trifle obsessive-compulsive. Lights must be switched off if you're leaving a room. Shopping carts are always returned to their corrals. Toilet paper must feed over the top of the roll - never from underneath. That kind of thing. In my core, I am a firm believer in waste-not, want-not. 'Frugal' could well be my middle name. Knowing myself, I knew I could not ever be comfortable & relaxed at 'wasting' all that yarn your technique uses. (Granted, on my list of things I hate, wasting yarn ranks far below my detestation of double borders on mosaic crochet, but I knew it would just eat at me with every row.) Most folks it won't bother a bit. Me, it would. BUT - it always seems that crocheting knowledge lands in a receptive mind when it is most needed. In watching this video, I became enchanted with your Anchored Double Crochet (ADC) stitch. Could this be the answer to my peeky, pesky bits I'd been wrestling with in weaving in my tails on the drop down double crochet mosaic stitches? Might I adapt this ADC for weaving in the tails on my non-bordered mosaic projects? The answer is YES!!!!! I'm just ecstatic. No borders. No tails. No pesky, peeking bits. I leave about 5-6" of yarn tail at both the beginning & ending of each row. At the beginning of rows I carry the tail along, encasing it within the stitches I'm making - using the techniques you show here. The ADC being the key for me. As the end of the row approaches I gently align the previous row's yarn tail along the top of the previous row & work it in that way as well. For me, this slight adaptation works and keeps the Frugal McDougal in me at peace. The combination of working yarn plus carried yarn does make for a bit wider/taller stitch than when I'm using only the one strand of yarn so I'm experimenting with switching to a smaller sized hook for those portions of the rows. Going down 0.5mm has seemed to make for less drastic size differences. As a side note, I've read elsewhere that the ADC can be used to break up long runs of gaps on the back side of one's work when working a simple drop down double crochet. (I find that executing the ADC takes me a bit longer & out of the rhythm & flow of my pattern so I haven't been using it except when I'm working over yarn tails.) So experimenting to see if I liked that effect (non-gaping backside ... oh dear, now I've got visions of 'plumber's crack' in my head) I tried throwing in an ADC after every third stitch for long runs of drop down double crochet. It still slows my rhythm down, but no droopy loops either. Additionally, that little extra bit of yarn in the ADC stitch makes just enough of a difference that there's a decided little visual blip when it's worked in a line of regular drop down double crochet. Your mileage may vary, but the OCD side of me always works it every fourth stitch so those blips line up nicely and voilà - a welcome design feature! Again, just a rather extended way of saying THANK YOU for sharing your skills & talents here. You've made my latest obsession with mosaic crochet one that I can enjoy without the impending feeling of doom I was getting whenever I contemplated that dreaded double border. EDITED to add another method of eliminating the need for working the 'standard' technique of double borders in mosaic crochet. Just found this one a couple of days ago - haven't yet given it a whirl. But I visited the KZbin page for "How to sew down a double border trapping the ends as you go." by Woolthreadpaint. The video has no sound but shows her method for avoiding that dratted double border/slip stitch mess that seems so ubiquitous on most mosaic crochet pattern instructions. In a nutshell, what she does is make a regular old double crochet (DC) border (I expect you could also do a HDC stitch instead) that is twice the depth of the yarn end encasing envelope you need. My guess would be a minimum of a 4 row border - it all would be dependent on how wide you want your finished border to be. Then, you simply fold that border in half, trapping the cut yarn ends, and stitch the top edge to the bottom of the first row. (Aw, shucks - that sounds way more complicated than it is. Just watch the video.)

When I do the ADC, why can't I go through both loops on the SC?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
You can work your Adc in both loops of the sc if you want. I like to work in both loops on the first and last Adc of the row for extra strength, but in the back loop of the rest of the sc across the row. I think it's just a personal preference! If you like the look of working in both loops, go for it! However, make sure your project doesn't lean to the right (if you're right-handed) when you're working all right side rows and working in both loops. I think working in just the back loop helps to keep the project from that lean that can happen when working all right side rows in both loops (like in Tapestry Crochet worked in both loops in the round).

This is so logical. Well done. It cannot use that much extra yarn if one factors in the yarn ends that have to be left to sew in.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The extra amount of yarn for my COM technique depends on the width of the project and if you would have crocheted a double border on your Mosaic Crochet project.

Now I just need a tutorial for regular mosaic/Aztec crochet (no overlay, no ends)!!!
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to as "Aztec Crochet". Are you talking about an Aztec looking design that is made in the Tapestry Crochet technique? Or one made in Tunisian Crochet with cross stitches on it? Or one made with all sc, changing colors, as necessary, across each row?

I may have missed your tip.... how are the ends on the right-hand-side hidden ?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
There will only be 2 ends for each of the 2 colors used in my COM technique for the whole project. The ends are carried across the row from the end to the beginning of the row to be used again 2 rows later. There won't be ends on the right-hand side because you bring them up the right-hand side to use again on the next row with that color (after the row of the opposite color). I don't cut the ends/tails at the end of each row like people typically do in overlay mosaic crochet, so I don't need to reattach the yarn at the beginning of each row. Did you watch me demonstrate this technique in the video? Does this make sense?

Would this work using just a few inches overlaid at each end?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on how wide your crochet piece is. If you just overlaid a few inches at each end, you'd probably have to cut the yarn and that's what I was trying to avoid with my COM technique! You might also end up with the end and beginning of each row being thicker/wider than the rest of the piece. You could try it and see how it works out for you. It might eliminate having to weave in all the ends when you're done, but it wouldn't eliminate the ends.

@@TheCrochetArchitect Good point. I'm thinking of large blankets ot lap blankets. That's a lot of yarn! It can be expensive!

Couldn't I use a similar technique to bury the ends of my previous rows on a larger project like a blanket or afghan?

I don't see why not! Are you talking about an Overlay Mosaic Crochet blanket or another crochet technique?

Yes. I'm about 1/3 through a King size overlay blanket for my daughter. She doesn't like fringe and I was at a loss about what to do. The main yarn has been discontinued. And I was trying to think of alternative ways of finishing it.. Seeing your technique, I thought: why not?

I've crocheted 2 overlay mosaic blankets with my COM technique. I really prefer it to having all those ends to deal with on every row! I hope it goes well for you. Don't forget to adjust the carried yarn before using it 2 rows later so your rows don't get too loose or too tight.

Hi, love to do mosaic crochet and your videos. I have made a large blanket with one row using numerous colors of left over yarn. I use the overlay method but without having to lay the yarn right across the whole row, I overlay a 4 inch length of yarn at each end and crochet over or weave it in. great way of using up small amounts of yarn.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great way to hide your ends, Michelle! Do the right and left edges get elongated with that many ends covered up in the first/last 4 inches and not the center of the rows?

@TheCrochetArchitect

Actually, I find the amount of extra yarn I use on a larger piece is offset by not having to do a double border to hide the ends! Plus carrying the extra yarn and working the anchored dc stitch helps to keep the large project from stretching too much in width and length. I hope you enjoy this method on small and large projects.

I did a variation on this idea on my first mosaic crochet project yesterday, i hate weaving ends in and it's prevented me from finishing many projects. So i worked a tiny purse in the round, crocheted a decorative strap, and worked the cover flap almost identically to this. Four ends for the whole thing. I've done virtually no color work in the twenty years I've crocheted, but this technique makes it attainable.

Thanks for sharing this, Beth! I'm with you on weaving in ends! I'd much rather work Overlay Mosaic Crochet with my COM technique than weave in tons of ends or work a double border!

@@TheCrochetArchitect it looks a lot better too, I think, and it's a lot more secure. I have four little ones and good solid, simple finishing techniques are absolutely essential in my household, so I don't have extra mending demands on top of finishing! The body of a project is fun, to do and to watch, but my girls who are learning to crochet and knit don't have enough patience just to watch me weave in more than a few ends! Most of their doll clothes are hairy scary🤣
