Nicole!!!! Thank you so much! I have done chain plying with Spinnkng but never thought of using my fingering yarn to make thicker yarn! I do have a fair amount of lightweight yarn… if I knew how to add a photo to this comment. I would show you the darling egg I knitted with my now 12-ply yarn to go in a basket with an Emotional Support Chicken and one of the In Sheep’s Clothing Chicklets. The chicken basket is for a fundraising auction for the youth in our church. I personally think it will be a cute basket. If I figure out the photo I will add it.

The difference between chain plying on a wheel and this method is that here Nicole isn't adding twist to the new 3ply yarn because it was already a plied yarn. As a spinner, I chain ply my single ply with opposite twist to how the single was spun. Knitting with Nicole's yarn will feel more like knitting with 3 separate strands together rather than one thick strand where the plies are wound around each other. But the structure of the chain is exactly the same and made in the same way - pulling a loop through a loop, just the same as in a crochet chain.
@TamarLitvot4 ай бұрын
@@helliejd As a knitter/weaver/spinner, I agree. I'm back to calling it Navajo plying (which I have done on an actual Navajo spindle) because I read in an article in Indian Country that it originated from the Navajo. So they deserve the credit!

Thank you Nicole! These were awesome tricks, especially the the no-cable-needle cables, and the speed-swatch items! These are the nuggets of pure gold you can only get from experienced knitters, or at least those who want to look as if they've been knitting for decades! I'm going to look like a knitting jedi in my little knitting group! Final question for you though, will you cover single sided knitting? This is flat knitting WITHOUT turning the work or sliding it along a circular knitting needle. I work a small swatch while I'm explaining to new people who want to join while employing this technique without actually looking at my hands ... and eyes just bug out and mouths drop open! Okay .... I'm a show off!

Awesome tips! I like the ssk alternative. I’ve done the chain ply to make a 3-strand yarn, but I don’t like how sometimes you can see the 3-strands of yarn in your fabric. As a spinner, what I do is overspin the entire ball of yarn Z onto a bobbin, then (putting that bobbin onto a lazy Kate), chain-ply it onto another bobbin S. I know not everyone has access to a spinning wheel (or wouldn’t consider doing this), but I find it certainly gives a better looking yarn result. Watch Oscar with that wand!!!!!

I’m currently switching back and forth between two knitting methods, so sometimes I might have my stitches mounted differently and need to knit through the back loop to correct the mount. I must be doing it automatically, without thinking about it or I would have noted it in the video 😋

I use the Navajo plying for my spinning wheel yarn you only need to spin one thin ply to achieve a 8ply yarn that contains more air and there for is warmer to ware as well as having a softer feel.

You eagle-eyed viewers catch everything! 😃 I was knitting through the back loop to re-mount a few stitches that I were sitting with the leading leg in the back. I should have mentioned it at the time, but it's something I do unconsciously. If you don't know what I'm talking about when I say "leading leg" - I explain all about that in my video called The Secret to Becoming a Real Knitter 😊

@@Knicoleknits ahhhh! I’d forgotten that changes the orientation. Thanks for explaining! Just watched the combined continental video and that reminded me, so then it made sense. Loving your channel 😊

Why do you knit through the back for the edge stitches?
@Knicoleknits3 ай бұрын
I do that to tighten up the edges a bit. This type of swatching has loose stitches at the edges and I like to keep it a bit more contained 😊 It’s not critical - just keeps the work tidier.

Meant to say that German cast on is some serious thumb gymnastics. Need to not twist yarn in process. Seriously took me 10 tries. Is it really that much different, physics majors only reply. Joking, looks nice.

Thumb gymnastics is a great description! With practice, the muscle memory will kick in and you'll be flying 😋😀

Been some time since I've heard of anyone getting covid. :( I skipped through looking at them to see if there was anything new . Oh I like the Patti Lyons hint , will have to look up more.
