I agree with the ‘overdress’ theory. When offices went business casual, I still dressed up. Not every day, but still wore skirts, jackets and dresses. If someone commented, I would say “ now no one knows when I’m interviewing”

Many years ago, I was working as a costumed character at a renaissance festival. Another performer had appointed herself as "fashion police" and was pointing out the faux pas of various patrons. She indicated with scorn a rather large woman who had chosen a halter and shorts in response to the Texas heat, displaying all her glorious love handles and rolls for the world to see. Instead of agreeing as my colleague expected, I responded, "Actually, I'm a little envious of anyone who is either that contemptuous of or oblivious to public opinion. My hat's off to her!" Bottom line, why do we even care what someone else looks like? As for the visible bra straps, panty lines, or (horrors!) socks, it's hardly a state secret that I'm wearing said garments. If someone is offended by the visual evidence, it's not my problem or concern.
@ANNAREID292 жыл бұрын
Such a great response! I can resonate with dressing for the humid heat ❤️ I don't think anyone gets offended by your bra strap as that would be ridiculous, but it's more so a distraction from you, what you have to say, your personality, or even the outfit you put together.

Love this! Thanks Anna! Other fashion mistakes? Throwing most clothes, bras especially, in the OMG the dryer. I hand wash a lot, and my bras get a quick soak in the bathroom sink every night. Wire hangers. Hangers that wreck the shoulders of your tops, jackets, knits, coats... Not considering your proportions. I'm 5'2" and I am super careful about the length of tops, jackets, and dresses. I tuck in, a lot. And, as you point out in another video, cropped and capris, especially those that are baggy, just nooooooooooooooooo. Buying things that are too small because one day you will fit into them. While you might be able to diet and exercise your way into it, you might find that it doesn't flatter your new shape or is not your (new) style, or is out of style. I lost 130 pounds during Lockdownia (which was long here in Canada) and I am constantly giving away stuff I bought (mostly on sale) a year ago because it really doesn't do a thing for me. (I was bored. I watched a lot of influencers and shopped online and on eBay wayyyyyyyyy too much.) Not getting a cobbler to put rubber soles/heels on shoes and boots. So many shoes have plastic soles and/or heels which are slippery and dangerous. Also, footwear lasts longer. Not taking advantage of belts to finish an outfit or cinch in your waist to give you shape or to make your legs look longer. Too many colours. Stick to three. Too much. Too many accessories and add-ons. Back when I was a girl -- I'm 71 -- my Mom and aunts followed the rule of 7. They'd add up "points" for their outfits: one for the dress, one if it had a print or was bright, one for a hat, one more if it was a major hat (we had milliners in the day), one for shoes, one more if they were a bright colour, one for a bag, one for discreet jewelry, one for more than two pieces of jewelry.... etc. When you hit 7, you had to take stuff off. And I totally agree with dressing for the occasion. You will have more confidence. People respect people who seem to respect themselves. We have become such a sloppy society and I think it's affected how we function as a society. Call me old-fashioned but ...

I looove the idea of your clothes making the statement of who you are, the outside representing and showing who you are on the inside. I have worked hard these last couple of years to create a sophisticated, kind, intelligent and effortless wardrobe, but it does not express my creativity. Going to work on adding a dash of creativity from now on to express that part of me. Thank you so much for that tip. Extremely helpful.

Excellent observations! As a hobby sewer, one that I might add is 'ensure your garments fit properly'. If not; take them to a seamstress or kiosk and have them altered. i.e.: It's amazing just a shortening of a half inch will do. Too deeply cut armholes in a sleeveless top can be easily altered. Etc. Etc.

Thanks, Anna. Your manner is so fun. The only one that didn't resonate with me was impulse shopping. All my favourite clothes and shoes were impulse-bought - when I deliberately look for items I end up getting dowdy ones. Something that has revolutionised my style (I don't care for what's in fashion) and the variety I can squeeze from my closet is using a closet app. I've used 3, but they all have the same benefit. I have all my clothes photographed so when shopping I can think about what a potential item might go with. And all my good outfit ideas are saved for easy reference when getting dressed. When I get a new item, I spend an hour or so trying it with various combinations and saving the winning ideas on my app.

I went from being very casual to dressing nicer.... We went to see an older movie with live music (it was a silent movie) and I thought that would be an appropriate occasion to dress up. Almost everyone there was dressed casually but the musicians... I felt it was respectful to look nice in appreciation of their efforts.. People definitely do a double take when they see me (its not formal wear) and seem to like it. My goal is to dress like a rich rancher woman from the late 1800s (long skirt, blouse -we watch a lot of westerns). I'm on a music, movies, books, clothes and car styles at least or around 100 years old kick, but thats a different story. We need class and kindness again! That photo of Conan O'Brien!🤣🤣🤣🤣 I agree with dressing for the occasion; I would rather be overdressed than underdressed. I went to a Swiss wedding where the groom's family were appropriately dressed but the bride's family, including the mother of the bride, turned up in really casual clothes and what seemed to be hiking\climbing sneakers. It gave the impression they couldn't be bothered. The groom's mother eventually got tipsy, sat next to me and threw so much shade at the bride's family. Awks!🤣🤣🤣

Really liked this! I am a tall plus-size woman, and have found out many years ago, that fashion does not agree with me. 😁 So I started to find MY style, and it came out as classic, all dark bottom-wear (in cotton or linen) and tops in different colours (cotton, linen, silk and some mixed fabrics). Did try different shoes, none with high heels (to tall), and the shoe-style that match everything... ballerina! And the tip about getting rid of clothes... everytime I move, salvation army gets lots of clothes, shoes and thing that has not been used in a year (or more!). Have a nice summer! 🌻

I don’t remove the thread from pockets in dress pants, blazers, etc. if it’s not visible. Keeps me from stuffing things in them or putting my hands in them. That eventually ruins the line of the clothing. For me the clothing looks good longer. Of course, I remove it from a jacket vent or if it’s obviously sewn shut.

I have been guilty of too many of the mistakes you mentioned. 😨 😄 but fortunately I grew up in a time when kids had school, play and church or special occasion clothes so dressing for the occasion became habit. I had to go to traffic court several years ago for speeding 😒. When the judge read the riot act to the many people in tank tops, shorts and flip flops and threw the book at each one as they appeared before him i thought i was doomed. When it was my turn he saw me respectfully dressed in my navy blue suit, smiled and turned into a pussy cat. I got off really easy. Whew! 😉 Love your channel! XXOO ❤️

Guess what, gals. The fashion industry figured out many decades ago how to take advantage of women fixated on wearing the size they used to be and profit off of it. I worked in the garment industry long ago and saw this done with higher end markets. They'd tag one size down with not-so-high-end pieces and sell them for more in high-end stores than the same garment with the original size would sell for in a lower-end kind of store. Same piece, different stores. And it worked like magic.

Now I’m madly ironing a blazer that clearly got squished in my closet…yes, those wrinkles look like wardrobe wrinkles, not wear-wrinkles. You’re right, you’re right…

.....why should I wear shoes I cannot walk in? Heels are unpractical and overrated. But I do wear kitten heels once a year. (Funerals etc.)

Exactly! So you've never worn a pair of heels that were uncomfortable but soooo cute? 😃

@@ANNAREID29 Nope, never 😌 BUT, I confess that I've worn my fare share of flats that gave me blisters 😅

I've never had high heels I couldn't walk in 🙋♀️ Being tall, I'm stuck with wearing low heels. I don't need the extra height and I don't like towering over folks. Once in a blue moon I'll wear a 3" heel.

I miss dressing nice -feel I can no longer do that due to the crime around me. Now, I wear sneakers, jeans, little jewelry and a nondescript t-shirt most of the time I go out and I’m always wary of my surroundings. Hopefully, I’ll sell my house in a couple of years and move to a town with less crime.

The high heel never were a problem because I was an all the time heel wearer but I injured my foot in 2020 wearing some flat sandals. It still giving me problems so heels are not as comfortable to me the last time I wore them out, my boyfriend pointed it out that I was walking funny (In your 60s you don't bounce back). I will be wearing the heeled shoe around the house to see what will work for me before stepping out the door. I like my sock being seen, because if you see them it intentional because it part of the look. I wear a 34H and those bras are expensive and the bad part of it when I gain weight the girls are the ones packing it on so effect the fit but I am not willing to invest in another $80+ on these and they have to order them because most of them are made in Europe (I have a few Panache bras they on the pretty side and don't look so matronly). I am guilty to the kilt with gravitating to wearing the athleisure wear and I have been trying to get out of it. I am surprised that you did not say anything on accessories and putting them to good use. What I need to work on is preparing and playing around with what I have in closet and realize it take some awareness to get my styling down. Enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.

I hate those skinny-strapped tanks worn with the bra straps showing, it looks trashy. I often search for “bra-friendly” or “wide strap” versions, because wearing a bra in public is non-negotiable for me. After decades of searching I finally found two styles of silk slip dresses that don’t have spaghetti straps, from Lily Silk. I love them, one is navy, one is black, different styles, but both mulberry silk (can’t wear synthetics).
