Just a little tip on 20 lb propane grill tanks. It is $70 in my area to get a filled 20 lb tank if you have NO tank to exchange. I look around my neighborhood on garbage day. Last week, I scored 3 old painted 20lb grill tanks with old grills people were throwing out. I unscrewed the tanks and put them in my truck. 2 were painted brown and still had propane in them. I keep them out of the sun as to not absorb heat due to the brown tank. I turned one in already at the orange box store and exchanged for full tank for $25. When the other 2 run out, I'll exchange them. FREE exchange tanks can be found when folks pitch their worn out grill this time of year. Save money and stock up on propane if you can.

Had a friend several years back tell me, he goes to their local recycling drop off spot and checks the hazmat bin and gets propane tanks for free. I've gone to our solid waste disposal yard and if I see a 20# tank, I ask if I can have it and they say "sure, go ahead". Then do a tank exchange.

I almost hate to mention them because I like having ready access to them and at a good price... go to your auto parts store for two things. A couple bundles of shop rags, and rolls (or dispensers) of blue shop towels. Especially the blue shop towels. Ridiculously stronger than paper towels. You can rinse them, wring them out, and get several uses out of them if you need to. Yeah, they are more expensive than store brand paper towels, but you don't need nearly as many of them. (they were also shown to be way more effective for use as a mask than cotton was, but is did require a little more breathing effort.) I keep a roll in my kitchen for wiping out grease from frying pans. These things can soak up some grease, let me tell ya.

Some things, like the hand sanitizer, were specific to that event. Going forward, what event is most likely to result in an SHTF scenario? Yes, get it all, but food, water, energy, and medical should be priorities right now. That said, we bought old fashioned handkerchiefs and cloth napkins because of what happened with Kleenex and napkins. We also ditched bleach altogether and just bought the hypochlorite to make our own as it stores way longer. Be careful because it is caustic and will corrode any metal it is near! If you're starting a garden, also learn to compost or have fertilizers and soil amendments already on hand. I'd also recommend a stop the bleed kit, skin stapler, and splints for broken bones and sprains because you really don't know if professional medical care will be available. God Bless you all!

Flashlights: Have at least one WITHOUT batteries in it. Can't count how often I've pulled out an old flashlight and found it ruined by old/leaky batteries. So, keep one without installed batteries, and maybe a set of batteries nearby in a ziplock bag. Keep shelf life in mind for all of these things. Ex: I bought a ton of matches a long while ago, and found a bit ago that they were all useless, as years of temperature and humidity changes had degraded the chemicals in their heads. Batteries can leak. Canned goods can rust and bulge, baby wipes in sealed containers aren't as sealed as you think and will dry out. Check your stocks from time to time and replace what has gone off.

What sells out first depends upon where you live and what kind of bad event is heading your way. When I lived in Hawaii and a hurricane was predicted, local news programs always showed that the items that sold out first in local supermarkets were batteries, toilet paper, raw white rice, bags of ice and Spam. Every time, the news programs also showed hardware stores quickly selling out of sheets of plywood and blue tarps. The plywood was used to board up windows before hurricane winds arrived and the tarps were for post-disaster if the roof was damaged. And every time, the local news programs would also show long lines of vehicles at fuel stations as lots of drivers decided to wait until the last few hours to fill their vehicle's tank. We kept a plastic bin of shelf stable food and other hurricane supplies at home, and before the start of hurricane season we would inspect that bin and replace anything that needed replacement. So, we did not need to be among that crowd of last-minute panicked shoppers at local supermarkets. We invested in corrugated metal shutters for our windows and patio doors, so would put those in place instead of trying to buy plywood. And we would top off our vehicles' fuel tanks days before the hurricane was predicted to come on shore. Not everyone in Hawaii was in a position to make preparations in advance, but so many were and yet they chose not to be prepared. Here in southern Nevada, where I now live, what sold out quickly at the start of the pandemic and was no longer readily available, even on Amazon, until covid vaccinations were available to everyone included Lysol and Clorox brands of anti-viral sprays and anti-viral wipes and real N-95 face masks. Even bottles of rubbing alcohol sold out for a while. Once these items were again available, I bought more to replace what I had used from my stockpile of pandemic supplies. What surprised me most about this pandemic was how quickly toilet paper sold out as certain panicked people bought a year's supply for themselves before merchants had the good sense to limit purchase amounts. I still do not understand why some people believed that having a lot of toilet paper would be lifesaving in a pandemic. So now our household keeps a month's supply of common household paper products in storage just in case there is ever again a bout of panicked and foolish last-minute over-buying of paper products by the general public. Lesson learned.

@@lynnedunn4964 Great idea. My wife thought I was crazy when I got a 55 gal barrel to store water in case of emergencies. About 3 months later a hurricane hit and the town beside us shut down their water system to prevent contamination. Then she compained that 55 gallons was still an excessive amount of water to store. I explained that the bare minimum is one gallon per person per day and stated realisticly it would be hard to get by on 5 gallons per person per day. She said I was crazy so I challenged her to get by on a daily allotment of 5 gallons per day for just three days. We now have three 55 gallon drums. If your biscuits are too far beyond there best before date, then even this method will not bring them back to there best. As for the dog and cat foods, after processing sometimes they will not want to eat this, by cooking up a little rice, peas and carrots and then adding the stale food to it, they may (depending on fussiness) eat this. I’ve had several dogs and each one grew up on this sort of mix, as well as wet processed foods and treats. Dollar Tree hasn't had the 6 pack of emergency candles for probably a year now. When my paycheck hits my bank account, I take around half of it out in cash and after I pay my bills with my debit card, the account is almost empty. I've got extra sleeping bags for some of my group that doesn't have them. I don't stock too much duct tape because if it gets old enough, it won't stick anymore. The $1 flashlights are cheap light and when they quit you just throw it away. I do have some better flashlights, but I keep a butt load of $1 ones around. Don't want to get caught out there without the proper amount of toilet paper? Do what I learned from a friend of mine several years ago, when ever you go to the convenience store for your beer or favorite snacks pick up some single rolls of toilet paper and put them in a big round cement form that's got one end sealed with a plastic bag and duct tape, when it's full seal the other end the same way and store in your attic or basement as long as they're dry. Keep doing this as many times as you think is necessary. Just don't leave a digital footprint. FEMA has the power to enter your homes and take what they want after they've exhausted all other resources like Walmart, Sam's club and the other stores like them

Compactor bags are like 13 gallons and are made for a kitchen compactor (crusher). I think you were wanting the large, heavy mil 55 gallon contractor bags that can be used for ground cover, pack cover, pack liner, solar still, poncho and a ton of other uses. I usually get my Hefty heavy Duty 3 mil ones at H Depo. I usually get stuck with the 42 gallon ones. If anyone has a link for the 55 gal ones, please post it. Tinned cat food never recovered - at least not around here! Always in incredibly short supply, so we grab as much as possible when it appears on the shelves. With the big Aluminium plants here shutting down now (for a YEAR!) I don't see that getting anything but worse. That's going to affect ALL tinned food (which also never really recovered - if the shelves are full, instead of 20 kinds of soup from 5 different brands, it'll be 10 kinds from 2 or 3 brands). Flour is getting very short again - and the prices are rising weekly (except at BJs - they have the good 10lb bags of King Arthur bread flour at a price that's gone up, but not too badly nor quickly). Baby wipes - in the military we LOADED up on those, so I always have. For all sorts of cleaning - from the body to THINGS, they're tops and great. We've also been stocking up on vitamins. For candles - we use them for the Sabbath, so we buy the big boxes anyhow - go to your store's Kosher section and you'll find good white wax candles for a great price. Thanks for sharing... I DO need to get more of some of the things you listed (especially kitty litter... THAT has been skyrocketing in price!!!)

Online, we're waiting for an order of more Wavian gas cans that was placed in early July and in stores the plastic cans with the safety nozzles we hate are often in short supply of only 2 to 3 and sometimes 1 or none!

Many emergency and easy to prepare food supplies get purchased by crowds and just disappear right before Florida or Gulf Coast/Atlantic Seaboard hurricanes. Get your storm and after storm supplies earliest even if you think CAT 1 as sometimes the storm's category goes stronger quickly. Many times electricity will be out in your home for a day or longer if the storm hits your area. Also have cash to pay gasoline stations after the storm because they sometimes still can pump but computer is off. Some other out of the way small stores do have things you may need where the supermarkets, big box hardware and home do-it-yourself stores are out as well as Walmart, Target, CVS, and Walgreens. Have extras and fill water containers early before the storm. You also may have to either use your stored water or boil public water for several days.

Things I remember running short of up here near a major city. TP, Yep, everyone was looking for it. Pet food, still not back to former stocks yet Paper Towels, Shelves went bare and prices climbed. Bottled water, Isles were cleaned out for months. Canning lids and Jars, Shortage lasted until the spring of the next year, Lids are still spotty at times and more expensive. Cat Litter, Had shortages of the clumping stuff. Owner at a pet store was telling us they had a shortage of the clumping chemical they added to the clay at the manufacturer. Beans, around a buck a pound before the shortages and the selection and price never recovered. Masks, N95 masks evaporated, and the price went through the roof. Simple masks and bandannas DO NOT protect you from the bug. Wood boards, Been a multi year issue with wood supplies from Canada to this day. Rice, saw limited choices during the panic. Been hearing lately India (#1 producer) is having water issues with the spotty monsoon season so we are looking at shortages at the end of the year again. Seeds, were a bit spotty the following spring and what we are using this year seems to have germination issues (been hearing this from others also) Seeds are going to be short again next year so stock up now. Coffee, while not real short back in the panic, between the supply issues and problems in South America it could vanish soon along with Tea. Both are grown out of country and if the supply chain goes bad there WILL BE NO MORE. Last trick I learned is I use olive oil and it goes bad after a year or so. I got some kits from Lehman's Amish Hardware in Ohio that turned canning jars into olive oil lamps (kit had 6 wicks, and 6 adapters for jars) Also made sure to stock up on spare wicks for all my lamps. Check sewing stores for cotton strapping the correct width to make more wicks and get it in rolls.
