Regarding lesson #1, to not require students not to turn on their camera, how would you know the actual student is in class ?
@sambistabeauty2 ай бұрын
Lesson #1 you mean unmute audio? Or turn on their video? If video, they don't need to anything personal or invite anything into a home. Totally unnecessary to share anything in the background right? Just use a virtual background. I need to be able to know who my students are in order to have any chance to assess them

Hi Ashlee, Thank you so much for sharing! As a high school teacher, I thought many of your lessons were very practical and full of common sense, especially remembering that many of our students may be coming from very different home environments than our own. Also, you continually reminded us how challenging a time this is for our students and to treat them with a great deal of compassion and understanding. Thank you again. :)

Yes, we all need to find empathy for our students during this challenging time but also to be kind to ourselves :) As teachers we tend to forget about ourselves so take time for yourself and understand that we are all going through a lot right now. One day at a time.

5:10 FYI if you need Microsoft Software bundle such as Word, Microsoft will let you use your school email to register a student copy for free. As for Google Docs and Slides, etc, we know we can always use that free tool and even convert to and from Word.

Thank you for an excellent video with so many useful tips. Interesting that most if not all actually apply to regular classrooms as well. Regarding the last lesson about getting a feel of the class, how would you do it if you had a class of 50-60 students?
@VirtualTeachingPro4 жыл бұрын
Great point! When I teach a face to face class that large (I've had up to 80 students in a class which is so exciting! It's almost feels like a really long TED talk) it's always easier to read the room because you are looking directly at their faces and can feel their energy. When you're online though that is more challenging with such a large class. If you can see their faces virtually, meaning their screen is on, then I try to read their physical response by asking them as a group questions. For example..."anyone else have that same idea" or "have any of you felt that way" or "do you encounter that situation in your life" and see if they nod their head or laugh or roll their eyes or smile. I also encourage physical responses like thumbs up, shaking fingers if they want to clap or agree with me or another student. By encouraging them to engage physically rather than the emoji buttons on zoom it helps me get a feel of there engagement and response online. If I can't see their screen or it's a webinar then it's difficult. I try to encourage them to use the chat box if they want to comment or respond to me or another student so it gets them involved with each other during the class even though I'm not paying attention to it. If they are chatting together about the topic that day by text then they are still engaging with each other.

About 13m 26 seconds in. During a group Zoom, no, I would not force Ss to talk, either. I am a Spanish teacher. Goals include learning to speak Spanish. So, my workaround would be a private/moderated Flipgrid video that only I would see. Suggestions to have them do interpersonal speaking? I was thinking two or three Ss could choose to work together...
@VirtualTeachingPro4 жыл бұрын
I actually think this is one situation where I would break my own "lesson learned" because of the nature of your class. Learning to speak a language really does require them to speak in class out loud. I really like your idea of using the private or moderated flipgrid video idea though as well along with the having perhaps 2 or 3 students working together you could even use the breakout rooms in zoom if you have a large class. Another option is to use GoReact if your school has it depending upon what platform you use like Canvas LMS. Canvas is also right now beta testing a new app that will allow students to easily upload recording videos of the speaking, presenting and then you as well as other students can comment on it. It's called Canvas Studio. Keep an eye out for that in the coming months.You could also even have them do audio recordings as an option for not in person work.
@wendystuck75034 жыл бұрын
@@VirtualTeachingPro I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to reply. I love the GoReact idea -- my school system is switching to Canvas (yes, I began to watch your videos yesterday). Canvas Studio sounds useful. I use GoogleVoice as an easy call-in if the FlipGrid situation isn't working.

there are a lot of factors to consider here: are you working independently or for an institution? what type of budget is available? how do you need the platform to function for your specific course work? will it be synchronous or asynchronous? what type of accessibility do your students require?

still confused about time setting. for example; I sett my course discussion for June 20, 2020. After my student reply and post their answer about the discussion, the system on Canvas read as "Yesterday (June 19, 2020) for the posting. Could you explane for time setting on your video. it's so confusing. Tq Ashlee. God bless you.
@VirtualTeachingPro4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Make sure you set the available from dates as well as the due date. The available from dates give a window of time when the students can see and actually do the assignment. If there are no "available from dates" set then it is open anytime for the students to view and complete. hope this helps.

About 9m 45 s in: Do you have tips to start conversations/create a positive classroom vibe/culture/atmosphere if I have to start the school year online? Relationships > curriculum = successful students.
@VirtualTeachingPro4 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent question. I'm going to add this to my video list since I've had a ton of other people ask the same question. Depending on how big your class is....I start out with a welcome from me where I introduce myself and give them the tools on how to navigate the class online. I tell them it's okay to mute their screens or videos if they feel uncomfortable or have a situation at home come up (noise, etc). I have them all intro each individually and say something about themselves (why they are taking this class, what they did over the break for fun, where they're from, etc depending upon the age). I start the first class off with something fun or interesting that relates to the class but makes them laugh or have fun and interact to create a safe space and build relationships. Let me go more into detail with a full video on all this in the coming weeks!
@wendystuck75034 жыл бұрын
@@VirtualTeachingPro I was thinking along the same lines. The curriculum will come. If students feel more relaxed, safe, and engaged, then they may want to continue to participate. Maybe a teeny Nearpod game or Kahoot game we could play together...
