The day’s main purpose is to encourage the purest, most essential kind of love there is - love for yourself. While this celebration only lasts for one day, the creator behind this special event doesn’t want you to limit yourselves. The whole month of March - to start with - could and should be used for holistic healing, where you can devote time to cherish and appreciate yourselves.
Can you believe the world once viewed loving yourself and putting yourself first as the height of selfishness? Every major religion and spiritual culture would advise against loving yourself - but it was allowed if your intentions were pure. Buddhism, Jainism, Yangism, and Confucianism, to name a few, regularly put loving others well above loving oneself. But the world eventually began to change its thoughts on this topic. Various movements and a growing awareness of individual rights have led to a growing realization of one’s worth.
The two World Wars, especially the second, and the ongoing Vietnam crisis led many Western cultures to advocate for peace and love among people. The world after the war was vulnerable but more aware than ever before of how fragile life really is. Harmony and love were the prevailing hope of the times across many countries, especially in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. The new generation of the 1950s and ‘60s were more empathetic, dedicated, and self-aware than their older generations.
