This video would be so much better if you didn't use images/clips of people other than who you're talking about, e.g. Lucille Ball in place of Katherine Hepburn. Also, Clarke Gable was not how you portrayed him (uncaring to his fellow actors). He came out batting for his African American Gone With The Wind co-stars. On the set, they were relegated to using separate bathrooms (from white actors) that were substandard. Gable threatened to quit GWTW if the studio didn't end the practice. He won.

Strange today, yes. But this is a good example of how different life for women was prior to the 1970's. I was born in 1960 and even then, I grew up with the highest expectation being that I marry well. I even remember, when I was 8 years old, telling my father I wanted to be a writer. His response (which I will NEVER forget) was, "oh, no. You can't be a writer. You can only be a teacher, a nurse or a dental hygienist. That is, until you get married." For years I believed him and I was very angry and very depressed. Because, of course, I believed him. One of the worst things that these 'revisionists' are doing is pretending that women were treated with respect prior to that. They were not. We were treated like second-class citizens. A few years later my mother left my father and was horrified to find that she was not allowed to open her own checking account without my father's "permission." (That was the law, but it was changed in 1974.) My father refused to help me go to college even as he helped my two brothers; my older brother got braces; I didn't. My brothers always got whatever they needed to succeed. But me? I was excess baggage. THAT is how every female, regardless of age, was treated in those days. This is the reason revisionism is so repellent and destructive for women and women's rights. Because half the problem was that women themselves were so cowed they didn't dare speak up or fight back. And that mentality persisted into the 1970's, the Women's Revolution only coming on the tail end of all the social revolutions that had taken place. In those days men were still allowed to BEAT their wives. By allowed, I mean, she had no recourse. She could not call the police! Can you imagine? But, also, in the 1920's and right up to the 1960's, until most of the social revolutions, morality and doing what was 'right' at the time was paramount to being a part of any group-- of your neighborhood, your church, your school. If a woman divorced in those days she was often ostracized by all her friends and family. And, too, Hollywood was perceived as the Devil's own town, wicked and depraved. The world was a very different place. BTW, another aspect of this is, by understanding how much women were up against, those few that did manage to break away in even earlier times (Jane Austen and Emily Bronte, for instance) had to endure even more censure and, for that reason, must be respected that much more. Also, if you have read any of Jane Austen's work (or even seen the movies), realize those stories were considered ridiculous at the time, even by women. Flights of fancy. And a major reason Jane never married. No man wanted a woman so independently minded, so intelligent. Intelligent women were almost always scorned.

Stanwyck may have been hated by some of her rivals, by folks who didn't like her politics, etc, but she was LOVED by most of the folks that worked directly with her, the people who did the grunt work in the industry...camera men, prop guys, grips, lighting technicians, script girls, makeup artists, hairdressers, caterers, extras, etc. She learned their names and asked about their families, never forgetting anyone. She was generous to those who were in need, often discreetly giving both small and large sums to help...she never asked repayment and often refused it. She remembered birthdays. She remembered who was expecting a baby or whose daughter was getting married. She SAW people, never looking through them. She was a woman of deep contradictions and had her flaws, but she was also a fiercely loyal friend and a soul of great generosity and kindness.

Not so sure Gloria Swanson should be on this list. Swanson's primary star power period was the silent picture era of the teens and twenties. She was the number one box office female star for years. She made millions of dollars a year at a time when the lack of any federal income tax meant you kept it all. Moreover, she was a powerhouse in the film business at a time when women just didn't do those things. At the height of her acting career, she started her own movie studio, which redoubled her earnings and which became the core of one of Hollywood's major studio complexes in the later decades. She had six husbands, but most of them were gold diggers who got a deep treasury to plunder. Sure, she lived large and went through fortunes, during and after her movie star days. She was out of the public eye by the mid-1930s, but unlike her character in Sunset Boulevard, she had more money than God and used it as she pleased the rest of her life. Videos like this one tend to focus on her role in Sunset Boulevard, probably because you can get video clips from that movie and It's easy to suggest that her character in that movie mirrored her real life, where if anything they were total opposites. Check out the videos of her guest appearances on The Dick Cavett Show to see the real Swanson, sharp as a tack.

What software are you using for the captions? You should scrap it and type in the captions manually because several times the captions get the name ridiculously wrong, showing "Barry" when you said "Beery". Also, your chapter headings are severely mismatched to the subject on the screen. Perhaps you need to pull this down and redo it, leaving out the chapter points.

I grew up admiring most of these people. Most of these actors and actresses were highly patriotic Americans and were owned body and soul by the studios. Studios planted stories and some even married at the direction of studio heads for publicity. I find many lies in this film. At 79, I hate how people deminish secessful people who are no longer to defend them selves. They are no worse than many of todays stars.

Here's my take - most of the Actors mentioned were women who refused to live to society's expectations! It's 2024, and life for women has not changed much! Sad!

Nothing more than Gossip. NOBODY'S FRIEND My name is Gossip. I have no respect for justice. I maim without killing. I break hearts and ruin lives. I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age. The more I am quoted the more I am believed. I flourish at every level of society. My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves against me because I have no name and no face. To track me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more elusive I become. I am nobody’s friend. Once I tarnish a reputation, it is never the same. I topple governments and ruin marriages. I ruin careers and cause sleepless nights, heartache and indigestion. I spawn suspicion and generate grief. I make innocent people cry in their pillows. Even my name hisses. I AM CALLED GOSSIP.

Vivienne Leigh had trouble because of her affair with Olivier that broke up both her own & his marriages. For the most part, the public had very little knowledge of her psychological & physical ailments.

So when we say “hated” what you actually mean is manufactured scandal in the media. The only person quoted so far as deeply unpleasant is Laurence Olivier. He was open about his hatred of Marilyn Monroe mostly because it was her production company that made the film and he disliked her being his boss. He was also fiercely competitive with Gielgud. The Bette Davis/ Joan Crawford feud was utterly manufactured by studio executives for publicity for their film. They actually didn’t really associate with each other. As for Kirk Douglas, he should be No1. He was a horrible man. A wife beater and bully.

Seems like, most of the actresses, are disliked for living like their male counterparts, during a time when women were supposed to be chasted and pure lol

Plus, Tracy was an alcoholic, and I guess that could put a damper on his sex drive (he was married many years to the same woman, until his death in the mid-1960s).

@djschu8012 If Hepburn was straight or Bi, I'm Santa Claus. The pressure to be straight, even on Hollywood was immense in her day. George Cukor, a close friend and one of her Director's spoke of her being Gay, and then there's that book by Scotty Bowers detailing how he pimped women for her for years. AND, then there's that woman she left a fortune to in her will, allegedly a long time lover.

I lived in the same iconic, baroque apartment building in New York City, the Hotel Ansonia,(see Wikipedia) as Shelley Winters. Some said unkind things about her...that she chose the renowned Ansonia because of the men's health club which attracted bodybuilders galore.

I think that this is disgusting in a sense because both Clark Gable and Judy Garland should not be on this list for one thing Clark Gable with his support of the black actress Hattie who played on gone with the wind and also Judy Garland who was raped in assaulted buy directors and producers during the time when she played Dorothy in The wizard of Oz it would be understandable why she reacted the way she did.
