The tip about not mixing acrylics with water was mind-blowing. I went through two years of art school happily sloshing water-diluted acrylics onto my non-gesso'd canvases and getting frustrated at how the canvas was gobbling up all of the paint, because nobody, at any point at that school bothered to tell us /how/ to use our mediums effectively. Heck, I was planning on painting a figurine in acrylics and would have completely ruined it if you hadn't mentioned that acrylics need their own dilution agent, because no other tutorial has mentioned not using water. Thank you for your funny, informative videos!

I never went to art school but I did have a useless highschool art teacher who basically babysat our class. Each day she would tell us "paint/draw/sculpt something", point to the supplies, then sit behind her desk on her phone while we did whatever. I was making my acrylics into watercolors and slapping it on my dry canvas, not understanding why things didn't turn out how I wanted them to.

More detail on how to know where the ear is: The bottom of the ear ends in line with your lip The ear is straight up from the jaw The top of the ear is in line with your eye (the one Emily said)
@recoveringsoul7554 жыл бұрын

Recovering Soul Hi! No worries, there is no such thing as a stupid question. There are several brands of workable fixatives that you can buy and use. @@recoveringsoul755 if it's in your sketchbook, yellowing isn't usually a big issue, as it doesn't see much (sun)light. Best thing if you want to be sure is probably research and tests. Put some on a paper and just put it in the sunniest part of your house for a while, see what happens.

The copying of art is actually something my old painting teacher taught us. Taking a tiny tiny piece of a painting out of context without being able to see the whole picture, and emulating just that. A part of the original that isn't the main focus, something to learn how the piece is constructed while still not having access to the whole picture so you arent emulating it perfectly. Hard to explain what i mean lol. We did it with paintings and photos we liked for one assignment.

Even though I am a seasoned artist and yes a bunch of these I knew, I was also surprised and very happy to find several tips useful. 1) Ink lifting when erasing! I always thought it had something to do with the ink not applying cleanly over the graphite, like skipping...my mind was blown on that one! 2) The differences in blooming with watercolors, I'm still learning this medium but this was very helpful. 3) Shamefully the diluting acrylics with water thing I'm guilty of but I was unaware it could make the paint crack long term, so I will keep that in mind from now on & 4) Making a straight line by looking at the point you're drawing to!!!!! This was another big one for me! I struggle with this a lot and always feel like my hands are too shaky...but I tried this out a few times after watching and it's like a damn miracle!

Thank you again, dear. Many tips I already knew, but there was several new ones for my brainy databank to deposit. What blew my mind? Wet vs. dry drawing ink and erasing! I really thought I knew my inks, but obviously I didnt. It was nice to see Im not the only one who uses makeup-brushes for art, they just work for all the dry stuff (chalks, micas etc.), really thought Im special kind of crazy, but yay, theres others! And heres my tip for drying brushes the right way; tape a knotted string-loop to the tail end of every brush (or the ones you care enough..). Just wash and hook em. I used to drill tiny holes at first, but then I discovered that even the heaviest dripping wet squirrel mop could hang just fine by the tape and twine-method. Very low tech, easily removable and no need for special contraptions.

I find with certain acrylics, if you need to thin with water, a good consistency to go for is somewhere around the consistency of dish soap. If you move it and collect it all with a palette knife, it should slightly flow out a little bit. It should still be fluid enough but strong enough to use without breaking the acrylic polymers. I still like to use thinners and other media though but a great tip if you wanna save a few bucks

regarding brushes in water... get yourself one of these. leave it next to your water. as soon as you are done painting with a brush, wash it. it takes two seconds. rinse out all the paint, run it through the cleanser gently working the cleanser into all the bristles, lightly roll/wiggle to ensure it's all the way through, rinse in rinse water. do not smash the bristles, scrub them, or bend them against the ferrule. If you have difficulty getting the paint rinsed out to begin with look for a brush basin with a screen at the bottom and be sure it is large enough or emptied regularly. if you are done with the brush entirely after you wash and rinse run it through the cleanser again, do not rinse, shape the bristles, and lay flat (or upside down if you have a brush tree or rack) to dry. This hardens and protects your bristles. Simply rinse brush before next use. Never store your brushes on the handle wet or dry. www.dickblick.com/products/the-masters-brush-cleaner-preserver/?clickTracking=true&wmcp=pla&wmcid=items&wmckw=05702-1004&gclid=CjwKCAiAxKv_BRBdEiwAyd40N8y-YhTewLgnmbBWJMalml1pdkh58N7DEjQIAc4tZBQBHHaimXuQ0xoCedIQAvD_BwE

Hey, about sketch and smudging. You can use hairspray with strong fixation -- and it glazes pencil in place. Although, what under hairspray is there to stay, so no erasing for this scetch.

I've been to art school and literally had no idea about the fineliner erasing and the kneaded eraser shaping ones 😂 glad to have learned it before inktober this year since the ink thing has been a thorn in my eye for the past 4 years of participating!! Really great video, even as a semi pro artist this was still really nice to watch and wouldya look at that I even learned something 👍

I knew most of it, but it was a good reminder, and some of it was confirming suspicions lol! I liked mostly the advice on linework, coloring, and painting as those are not my strong suits. I can draw well, and build a character from ground up, but getting it from sketch to presentable colored art piece is where I fail. I also hardly ever get to paint, so there was some supply care tips I didn't know.
