Thanks for posting this collection. I was 16 in 1982 and was an avid NH racing fan back then (as I was too young, I didn't gamble at all and literally just had my favourites). I remember being sad to see the demise of Night Nurse from the Gold Cup onwards, through his laboured run in the Hennessy, before his final race in the King George. But he was 11yo and, in fairness, the staying chasing division improved a lot at this time. I guess what I loved about Night Nurse was that he could throw in the odd shocker, clatter the odd fence, but just when he was being written off would come back and run a stormer. Easy to forget that he was bred for the flat, so chasing really didn't come naturally to him, but he was a warrior. Having watched the full video, 1982 really seems like it was Bregawn's year. He is remembered with less affection than Silver Buck or Wayward Lad, which is understandable given his temperament. He went downhill very rapidly after his Gold Cup win, but I don't know if this was a physical or mental issue. But even at his peak, you can see he was a feisty one. Probably a nightmare to look after. Wayward Lad just exuded class and looked the part, but as can be seen, he wasn't the strongest of finishers and would never have recovered like Bregawn did in the Hennessy. For this reason, I think a peak Bregawn was better, and perhaps even better than the winning machine that was Silver Buck. However, Wayward Lad endured for many seasons afterwards.

These are great comments and thank you so much.Yes Night Nurse hit a Golden patch just before and after finishing second in the Gold Cup.Some of the Handicap performances he put up must have been very close to 180.Timeform gave him 175 in 1982 but I think he justified the 180.The form all worked out trying twice to give Bregawn 19 and 20 pounds and he’s given Captain John I think it was 10 pounds in The Mandarin.21 pounds to Sunset Cristo and he finished third in the gold cup.Im sure Royal Judgement would have been a 155/160 Horse and he’s giving him lumps of weight and thrashing him twice but it doesn’t matter now. I think he had had enough when he ran in that Gold Cup but Easterby did have a virus in the stable at the time. That definitely finished Sea Pigeon and he never recovered from it.Yes Bregawn eventually started to refuse to race and pulling himself up.Yes Wayward lad was always a weak finisher over more than 2.5 miles .Would easily have won a Champion Chase had he ran in one and that hill wouldn’t have hurt him so much.Nice to hear from you.

Thank you for this great selection from 1982......still remember my shock as a kid during the Christmas holidays as Captain John was left behind by Corbiere and Pilot Officer in the Welsh National....having seen him just beaten by Bregawn in the Hennessey and then romp home in the SGB just weeks earlier. ..he clearly didn't stay now in hindsight

What a treat to see these races again! Especially Silent Valley, what a horse he was, a Ballymacoll bred, starting life with John Dunlop and then racing and winning for Iain Jordon up to 15 years old, I think. Many thanks 👏🏻

Remember Silent Valley well. He was 2nd in the Scottish Grand National and the Hennessy in 1980. I think he suffered a long term injury and that was a decent field he beat at Aintree .
