I use Tyvek Tape to seal all my epoxy. The outside is plastic so it won't adhere to the tape and the sticky-ness is almost too much sometimes

At first I though why fix such a totalled thruster, but the. Saw this was a master class in fixing any kind of issue in a board. In particular I like how you made it into. Twin with that aggressive fin positioning. With that round rail it would be a bucket of fun to surf in small to medium waves (so many twins out there in fish format, but few twins shaped with a round rail and some rocker. Maybe you could retitle the video to “turn on old junker thruster into a awesome twin”

If nobody has explained it, surfacing agent is wax dissolved in styrene. Added properly to laminating resin it allows the wax to float to the surface during cure and seals the lam resin making it cure tac free

So glad I found this vid. Stopped halfway on a project like this after I peeled the glass off. Wasnt sure how to fill the foam areas that chipped out when the glass came up, seems like you solved that here. Honestly you prob couldn’t find a more fucked up board that the one you used here…lol, mine is close though. Cool project to keep boards out of landfills, props!

Couldn’t you use some kind of bondo instead of that spackle/joint compound. Because there are lightweight easy sand body fillers of there that are white like that joint compound. Just seems like that joint compound won’t hold up if we’re to get wet.

man, I thought the whole process was very good, just in my humble opinion, it could have given the board a new face... having worked the bottom with more pronounced concaves and a color too, leaving behind the board face of the rubbish, she remained ugly.

Nice job, can't say the paint is to my taste but always good to see an old board get a new lease on life! It's a shame you didn't salvage the original logo .... or was that not original? Was the board a single originally that someone had tried to make a thruster or was in a twin someone had added a trailer to? Good work, look forward to seeing some more! Show us what she surfs like sometime!
@Rogue_wave
@Rogue_wave 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I love to save logos when I can, but you lose them when you remove the fiberglass. If I can find high res pictures online I’ll print them and can glass them in like the original, but in this case, no luck. The board was originally a thruster- but I have a lot of thrusters… I’m going to get a video up of me surfing this board as soon as I get enough footage!

I love the fact you’re willing to fix things. You must really love doing it. What do you think the cost of your materials and labor were? More than a new board my guess. But great for making videos!! Wish you had been a bit more thoughtful on the paint job. Cant say I love it honestly, despite really enjoying watching the entire process here on KZbin. I felt like for all the work you put in, you should’ve just made it look like a serious prize with a more planned out paint job. It was like: dude goes this far just to make a bunch of ugly squiggling with ugly colors? Wtf, kinda shocked me. Like I’ve never put in that much work on something ever to half ass part of it. Idk, just my opinion…not that it matters. Truth is, if you just did solid paint jobs you could probably make money, as art piece or even a board someone would buy to use. Put some hooky turtle on it and and sell it to someone in Hawaii for $2k for an outdoor shower setup or something. It looks like you have a talent.

I have a Old 1980 Ricky Carroll long board that needs to be stripped down and redone .. its been on my list of things to do lol and I have a Rozburn board that I'm going to modify I can't stand the tail! it sucks! gonna reshape it ... any ways Keep at it brotha ! @@Rogue_wave I rewatched it. Sure looks like theres a screw in there. You can see the shiny metal just below the plane of the glass. Anyway, I think its cool you took a shot at completely strippingna board and rebuilding it. The drywall mud was really interesting. Did it add a lot of weight?
@Rogue_wave
@Rogue_wave 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinm5564 I meant to say screw was already backed out (enough for the fin to go down). But yes the screw is still in the hole. If the screw was all the way in, the fin would never go in the box, no matter if I hit it 100 times with the mallet and chisel. But I see why you’re saying that- the way I edited that part was confusing! Drywall mud will start to add weight if you don’t spend time to sand it back down really well. On this board it barely added any weight.

Hey, rewatching the video, did you route the board directly into the foam or did you skip the glassing of the bottom? If you did do it over the glass, was it only one 4oz? I tried one routing with the one pass drillbit but due to the glass(I sanded it down pretty thin) it got a bunch of resistance. Btw it was a friends drillbit, I don't know how old it was. Again great video, thanks for all the effort
@Rogue_wave
@Rogue_wave 2 жыл бұрын
Good question- I laminate the board before routing. The fin boxes are close to the rail so on parts you'll be routing through your lap, IE routing through two layers of 4oz fiberglass. Even on the double layer, your router should cut right through it. What router are you using?
