Everything you missed in the hit series Vikings
Subscribe: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-Screenrant
Vikings has sadly come to an end, but like the question posed in the finale- what exactly is the end? The show might not be making any more episodes, but that doesn’t mean it’s dead (I mean, it’s having its own spinoff show after all) especially if we keep talking about it. To be honest, since it’s ended, that’s all we can do...keep talking about Vikings! So that’s why in this video we are going to take a look at 25 things you might have missed in the show.
We shall be including easter eggs that were sneakily inserted without you probably knowing, interesting pieces of trivia, behind the scenes details as well as shocking secrets from the cast members. It’s going to be a great voyage- are you up for the adventure? If you are, join us on our Screen Rant longship as we take a voyage to behind the scenes and raid them for their precious easter eggs. Seriously though, I will keep doing these weak Viking metaphors if you don’t watch the video. Enjoy!
What did you make of this video? What was your favorite piece of trivia or easter egg? Anything we missed? Let us know in the comments below and make sure to subscribe today for all this and more!

While I have been a fan of the show since episode 1 it needs to be said that there are many flaws, and as such there are flaws in this video. First, there is ONE account that suggests that the Norse wore eyeliner, the man responsible for the account was a Spanish Muslim names Al-Tartushi who visited the Danish city of Hedeby some time in the 10th century. Eyeliner MAY have been a custom there, but that does not mean Norwegians would have done the same thing or that they would have gobbed it all over half of their faces. Tattoos are another area where we have no physical evidence, and not even a word in their language that we can link to the word tattoo. The idea of Vikings having tattoos comes from the written account of Ibn Fadlan another 10th century traveled, who traveled from Baghdad up to the Rus kingdom somewhere around Kiev. While in Kiev he reportedly witnessed a chieftain’s funeral where he saw men “painted” (according to the translations I’ve read) with images of trees. These marks reportedly went “from fingernails to neck” meaning the face tattoos we see in the show are almost certainly not representative the custom. The Rus (originally Swedish) were also very much integrated into the local population by this point, so they may well have been practicing a custom borrowed from the Slavic people of the area. The costumes are nowhere near accurate, far too much leather and raw pelts draped over the shoulders, also bright colours were a way to show off ones wealth. Like stated the show is not meant to be historical, and it shows.

So structure of medieval societies, environment and their surroundings are pretty historically accurate. A lot of events also happened and a lot of characters were based on real characters. Now main problem from the historical perspective in this show is its pacing: In 6 seasons it covers more than 200 years history of the Viking Age and it the show it takes maybe 20-30 years. So that is the the biggest pitfall from this perspective, but otherwise this show is very historically authentic.

I believe that Kattegat in the series, is actually supposed to be the real Hedeby. Hedeby is believed to be exactly what Kattegat was in the series - except it was (still is) a city in Denmark. It's a shame everything "Danish" became Norwegian on the screen, but I really can't blame them. There's no comparing between the flat fields in Denmark and the mountains and fjords of Norway 👍

@brutii25
@brutii25 3 жыл бұрын
Well, it gladens me ;) that SOME were seen.. but, from my knowledge, chainmail and other heavy armour were standard outfit for many Norsemen, in our museums over here they show finds of a lot of heavy armour that belonged to Norsemen - from even a long time before the Viking Age had started - a time known as the Vendel Age, and the armour and weaponry found from that time were probably present in those societies due to influence from the Roman Empire, and other Empires, around that time (influence through trading and doing mercenary work down on the continent, and also most likely influence through some wars between Germanic tribes at that time - in northern Germany/Denmark/Sweden/Norway). .. and in the Vikings TV-show they barely use helmets... hahaha.. helmets were kind of a big deal, even to "barbarians" like my ancestors :) Besides that, we actually have a "Gold Room" here in our Historic Museum in Stockholm, with amazing amounts of treasure that were brought to the North from all around the world, and a lot of the finds were from before the Viking Age (supporting the argument that trade and mercenary work were of huge influence/importance to the "Outback" of the North. These amazing finds are still being uncovered today, just about 3 months ago they found a huge gold treasure, from the Viking Age, that were burried in one of the fields of the area known as Täby, about 15 minutes car ride away from central Stockholm. //Sweden

@@brutii25 even when they used helmets, they used helmets from 15 century at least... This video was nice for giggles, if they put "fact" how they used as authentic weapons and costumes as possible at start of the video i would save myself time
@syndicalist-0
@syndicalist-0 3 жыл бұрын
@@brutii25 you had chainmail if you could afford it...id say the standard was padded armor jackets. We only have one or two confirmed Scandinavian "viking" helmets (the spectacle helmet comes to mind). At least if were talking 9th and 10th century vikings. This show is horrific in its depiction of them lol but its still entertaining.
@brutii25
@brutii25 3 жыл бұрын
@@syndicalist-0 true. One could fairly reasonably say that body protection for the poorest consisted of things made from wood, linen and leather. Though, it is difficult to condense facts, and reasonable guesses, about a few hundred years that regard anything from elite warriors (invasion force) to peasants/young lads (going occasionally on raids) to one simple yes or no answer. Depending on how you ask the question - you'll get a different answer. Were there advanced as well as basic armouring of the "Vikings"? Yes. But depending on the situation/person it varied. Look at the defeat at Stamford Bridge where it is said explicitly that the Viking force were caught off guard - away from their heavy armour. One might think that writing in commentary sections about this is unnecessary/idiotic - and yes it is - but still, even so, that doesn't make this here statement untrue: my ancestral history was in large written by their opponents - don't believe everything you read/see. In media my ancestors are often (all the time) portrayed in the way the Christian World views them - and that is important to remember.
