This is a video I made for my cohort. Feel free to use it with new teacher inductions, teacher graduations, or any other thing that honors teachers.
25 Things to Know About Teaching
Congratulations. You are about to enter one of the most noble professions in the world. Here are 25 things you should know about ahead of time:
That’s right. Twenty-five.
1. During the first week of school, your feet are going to hurt.
2. You will rediscover the joy of simple things, like smelly markers.
3. You will have teacher nightmares the month before you start teaching. It’s totally normal. We all get them.
4. But some of those nightmares will become a reality. Because you’re going to fail. Hard. But each mistake is another iteration closer to success. So, keep experimenting.
5. You will learn to hold your bladder for hours on end. If this were an Olympic sport, teachers would be gold medalists.
6. You will cry in your car. Or at your desk. Or maybe even both.
7. You’re going to put on weight. It’s like the freshman fifteen, except it might be 20 or 25.
8. You will yell at your class. You will apologize. And your students will amaze you when they forgive you on the spot.
9. But here’s the thing. You’re going to have amazing lessons and you’ll shock yourself with how awesome you are when you bring your A game.
10. You will leave your lunch at home and eat it from the vending machine. You’ll convince yourself that Cheez-Its and Cheetohs are a full portion of dairy.
11. You’re going to start carrying around hand sanitizer everywhere. Or, as the kids call it, “Hanitizer”
12. From this year forward, you are going to be stuck watching the same Bloodborne Pathogen video year after year after year. Welcome to the club.
13. You’re going to fall asleep at 5:00 in the evening with a half-empty carton of Ben and Jerry’s and a massive pile of papers.
14. You’re going to try to do too much and try too hard and that’s okay. Just give yourself permission to rest. Watch a movie. Read a book. Go out into nature. Take care of your health.
15. Your students are going to amaze you with their work and their ideas and their growth
16. You’ll feel like the luckiest person alive. And you are. But here’s the thing. So are your students.
17. You will worry about your students. You will have a student whose story breaks your heart and you will think about that child every day when you go home.
18. Then you will go back and you will listen to that child and affirm that child and teach that child and love that child even when they are difficult. Because you are a teacher and that’s what we do.
19. Someday the kids in your class will come back and invite you to their college graduation and hand you a thank you note and you’ll cry in your car just like you did in the first year of teaching.
20. Even on your worst days, you are going to think critically and promote justice and transform the teaching practice.
21. You will inspire students to be better people and
22. empower them to be deeper thinkers.
23. They will feel safe and loved and challenged.
24. They will be the makers who build a better future.
25. And the world will be better place. Because of you.

I cried a lot on my first training experience. There were lots of questions in my mind. Why wasn't I good enough? What did I do wrong? Why can't things work out? I started crying everyday after school. I started thinking that maybe I chose the wrong career. All the other teachers started judging me and telling me that I'm too stupid and too childish to be a teacher. Even now, when I look at my lesson plans and binder that I did during that training, I still feel like crying. But, despite all of that criticism, at the last day of my training, one of the student wrote me a farewell letter saying that I am a good teacher. That was the only day that I went home with a smile. Tracy Goh I cried so many days in the car on the way to school in the beginning. I taught middle school math and the current class of 8th graders were a tough class just in general. I did not get the support I needed from admin but I did the best with what I was given.

Everybody processes emotions differently, right? I used to let it crawl under my skin. I should have cried more. I am a very confident teacher who had to deal with a lot of annoying behaviour. It was my students' way of saying: "Hey, you need to be the one who sets the boundaries here."

Hence your profile picture (I'm talking about you sleeping on a book). I think that you cried because it's such hard work and there's a lot of moments that you recognize. It's all about gaining the necessary experience and overcoming a lot of hurdles before you can comfortably stand in front of a group and 'teach'. It's a wonderful and insightful journey. Don't let you deter from your goal and enjoy every (small) success.

This is awesome!! Wish I would have seen this when I first started teaching in 2015. I am 39 years old. I left a job that I’ve had for over ten years to become a High School English teacher. I was sooooo nervous. I felt for almost a month before school started that I made a HUGE mistake. I was anxious and nauseous the night before. I couldn’t sleep and felt like crying. My husband, another teacher, told me that I will be fine. That he felt the same way. When I went to my classroom that first day of school and that bell rang....I felt like I had been teaching for years. I felt like a pro. Of course I lean everyday from my students and other fellow teachers. But I feel like I belong. I’m so happy that I made that career change.

What I didn’t know during my first year was that I’d get, literally, 15-20 hours of sleep each school day for my first two months because I’d stress over lesson plans. That I’d cry every day in my car, feel pathetic for feeling bad for myself, then cry more for being so pathetic. That I couldn’t even visualize the next week of my life because I felt so miserable and lost and exhausted. That I’d choose to work at home over eating and sleeping because I didn’t know how to manage my time. That I’d be moody and cranky every second I wasn’t at work putting up an act and how my family noticed how much I’ve changed. That I’d lose weight. But eventually I got the hang of it. And I’m still waiting for something to happen to validate my decision. And things are better because I’ve learned a routine, but it is hard. And anyone who thinks this job is easy because we get weekends and summers off can kindly suck every teacher’s ass because we have the most thankless job ever, we have the most patience ever, and we are such selfless people.

So accurate. I'm in my 4th year, and I don't know if I will ever feel comfortable as a teacher. People don't understand that every year is different. Not only do the kids change, but some years the standards change, the textbooks change, your classroom changes, you change grade levels, you change subjects, your administration changes, the evaluations change, and on and on and on. You never get a chance to get really good at anything because they change something every year. My 1st two years, I taught 6th grade math, and those 1st two years are just hard because you're not sure what you're doing. Then my 3rd year, they ask me to get certified in gifted education and they add a gifted 6th grade class to my schedule. This year I am teaching AC 6th, AC 7th, Algebra 1, and Geometry. It's literally like being a 1st year teacher every year except you sort of know how to hold your shit together a tiny bit better. This job is not for the faint of heart.

I've taught for 30 years, and I was so ready to argue with these (cuz I love doing that). But it's spot on. Except I didn't gain weight. I got addicted to a soap opera to escape each day when I got home! Now, on the verge of retirement, I can say the whole journey was worth it.

we are educators, scientists, surrogate parents, security officers, nurses, psychologists, therapists, lawyers, stand-up comedians.... just to name a few of our many hats as teachers, especially Elementary teachers. We are very underpaid for our work and a good portion of our salary will go into our classroom and our students, but we'l always have the most interesting stories to tell, and the rewards will always outweigh the burdens of difficult students, angry parents, and nightmares about grading papers. That's the only reason why teachers don't quit after a couple of months: there are no LOGICAL reasons for being a teacher, only EMOTIONAL ones. For the amount of salary you get you could have a job with less thinking involved and all the weekends to yourself. I'm a pre-kindergarten teacher and I am at work 12 hours a day and work through most weekends to make lesson plans and teaching materials that will hopefully make the lesson more memorable and fun. (You can't just give them worksheets!) My apartment is like a storage bin of empty toilet rolls and other such junk and every time I go to a book store I cannot help myself but check out all the kids stuff... Today I saw nice flashcards for body parts and I was really tempted to buy it: it's the first topic of the school year that starts in a couple of days. But I decided to make my own because I cannot afford commercial ones... but I have to make 150 other cards before I can tackle that topic (Colour printing is not allowed so I will have to colour every picture by hand) so this is probably my last night of proper sleep... It wouldn't be bad if it was like this only at the beginning of the year, but apart from a few days of self-indulgence which I always end up regretting, there's always more things to make, worksheets and exams to mark, teaching logs and reports to write, dealing with parents who relinquish any parental responsibility & then blame you for their child's bad behaviour, listening to your TA complaining about parents and children and trying to make them understand what you think is important or most helpful to you. And that's not even mentioning about the total lack of support for having from moderate to severe SEN children (who can be aggressive when upset or they just don't understand what's not OK) and who's parents are in denial because their child hasn't been seen by a professional since they were born.. I have had a few jobs in my life before I became a teacher. I risked my life going down weak and rusty sewage wells to read the metre for a water company; having a patient's blood squirt to my face at dentist surgery because masks and safety goggles were not provided, being attacked by wild owls when cleaning their cage in owl sanctuary, trying to get people interested in something as mundane as margarine when I was a sales prep, standing my ground against a bunch of teenagers and getting then to stop jumping on cars in in late night burger joint car park, being a night nurse in a private home for a blind young man with brain damage who starts screaming, scared because he thinks he has been taken away or that his nappy needs changing, getting pinched, scratched and a whole meal spat on my face in a nursing home, spending all day bent down picking strawberries at neck break speed, serving customer complaints, including those who try to cheat and not pay for their purchase etc. But teaching has been by far the hardest job that I have ever done and it doesn't leave me even on vacation but I am always on the lookout for something new or interesting to bring to my classroom.

That's a very nice list, but as a teacher for 24 years, I think I can add a few things that I wish I had known from the get-go. For instance, you are entering the most politicized career outside of being a politician. Everything about what you do and how you do it is going to be subject for public debate. You will find out very quickly why unionization is absolutely vital. If you doubt this, look at the Six States, that's entire states!, that have gone on strike over teachers rights, salary, and benefits. You will have administrators who will know next to nothing about good education who will be your boss and will tell you how to do your job even though you know they're absolutely wrong. You will be spending on average about $1,500 on your classroom per year that will never get reimbursed nor will you be able to deduct it from your income tax. You will frequently have to deal with parents whom instantly make you feel a great deal of sympathy for your students, they will task your every decision and for no other reason than they can, they will give you major migraines. You will find, in other words, the parents will either be your best allies or your worst enemies when it comes to educating your students. You will find that the brakes you have are often all too short, so do what you need to do to truly unwind and divest yourself of your job when you have them. That's not to say that there aren't many immense Joys that come with teaching. I have been doing it for 24 years for a lot of reasons that were listed in that video, however there are some tremendous hardships that come with this job as well. If you're not aware of how political your position is, if you haven't been paying attention to things like the Janus case, if you are uncomfortable with the idea of taking strong stands in very difficult debates with people over the work you do, there is going to be a very steep learning curve for you. Like I said and like this video said, there's a lot of joy that comes with teaching, but there are also significant headaches and heartaches that will hit you from places you never imagined. Walk into this job with both of your eyes wide open.

True - but people need to know there's a LOT more to teaching than "changing lives" - and that one of those things that prospective teachers need to know about is how utterly and completely demanding and consuming this job can be... how vital it is to have a good personal support system in place if you're going to endure for 30+ years in this career with your sanity, energy, and hope in tact.

Thank you! I hate when people try to make teaching sound like it's nothing but rewarding and inspirational and butterflies and sunshine. I am on year 4 of teaching, and I am still bitter to this day that everyone I worked with in my teacher preparation program gave a false impression of the teaching profession. It's not fair to send young teachers into the profession with little inspirational poems and flowery videos like this without some sort of side note about the ugly realities. It's not accurate. At least half of the people who graduated with me (3 years ago), are no longer teaching. I strongly believe that is due to the ridiculously idealistic view of teaching that is portrayed to aspiring teachers. I don't think anything can truly prepare you for your own classroom, but I almost think it's cruel how much professors and teachers promote this unrealistic image of teaching to new teachers. Call me jaded or whatever, but I take every opportunity I get to tell aspiring teachers the ugly truth because I know that all they're hearing is how awesome and rewarding it will be.

Knowing that I'm actually forming relationships with these kids makes me feel like I actually might be doing some good. But even though I know I'm good at what I do, it is still so so so hard, and I want people who are considering this career path to have that understanding before they feel too trapped to turn back.

I’m already a substitute teacher so I’m definitely mentally and physically prepared for what my teaching days will be like. Very rewarding. But it can get tough. I have cried a few times both from happiness and from anger. You need to be really patient, understanding and most of all loving for this job.

This video made me cry! Where I live, teachers are looked down upon. It's sad because I saw that my teachers (whether they were good at what they were doing or not) always tried their best to TEACH us. To GIVE US knowlegde that we will one day give our children, grandchildren... whatever. I'm so happy to say that today I got my confirmation to attend university to become a teacher majoring in english and psychology/philosophy! Omg I love this so much! I'm 27 and I've been doing phlebotomy, but it just isn't for me.. being a teacher has always been in the back of my mind, because I still remember the ones who were good to me, or reassured me when I didn't think life would get better (I had a rough childhood).. I will be starting my 4 year degree in Spring. I'm terrified but so excited. This gave me so much reassurance that I'm going in the right direction.

I honestly don't care how much I get paid, i don't care if I have to work an extra shift at mcdonalds on the weekend to pay my rent. I want to be an English teacher for 7th/8th grade. I had a shitty mother growing up and through my whole life there was always those teachers who made me so comfortable and happy. They wouldn't yell at me if I was tired they would ask if I'm okay. They used to make me actually want to go to school. Like I wasn't forced to go, I wanted to go. I started to hate the weekends becuase I was away from school. That's how happy they made me. I want to do the same to many more children out there. I'm gonna be the teacher that they will miss when they grow up, the one who would give them hugs and always have a high spirit. It broke my heart every time I had to move up a school or get a new teacher becuase not all of them are that great but that just taught me to appreciate when you have a really good teacher.

Going into my 13th year teachering and if #12 doesn’t crack you up are you really a teacher?🤔 I see a lot of people in the comments wanting to be teachers and that is amazing. All I ask is that you research this career carefully (pay, work load, etc.) because as you settle into life with relationships, houses, kids, and all the glorious stuff life has to offer, it becomes difficult to change your career. Intern in classroom, be leery of the ones a principal wants to show off. Many are good but a select few know how to fake it and you don’t want to learn from them. Seriously though: Accept interns from universities and have them do your grading. Befriend guest teachers as some will come in to volunteer to help out. Get to bed early. Absorb what you can from teachers who have their 💩 together. Use at least one prep per week venturing into your colleague’s rooms.

I usually don't comment on KZbin videos, but I have to say that the maker of this video and the comments are so hopeful, positive, and inspiring. So it's nice to see those bright spots, especially in KZbin comments. I agree with a few other commenters that the video definitely paints a very rosy picture of teaching. What people don't tell you before going into teaching is that you spend money out of your own pocket for classroom supplies, support for your students or you spend hours on DonorsChoose (love the organization by the way!) getting things for your students from your already small paycheck. You spend time surfing on TeachersPayTeachers (shout out to them too) looking for little things to help in your lesson planning but if you're a bilingual teacher like me, ending up translating instead of creating your own things because there just isn't enough time in the day. You either spend too much time at work, or are expected to work for free. You work a second or even a third job because you don't make enough money to support yourself. If you're not careful, it can turn into an 18 hr a day or more job. Summers might eventually become your own, but you still have professional development and seminars, etc. You learn how to meal plan if you don't already know because the teaching day is exhausting and you don't have time to cook. You also might work with children who have severe trauma related issues and so you are expected to be a psychologist, coach, counselor, nurse, surrogate parent, social emotional and manners trainer, security guard, mediator, and countless other things. By the way, teachers with families, you are true superheroes because I honestly don't know HOW you do it. With all of the teacher strikes going on now nationwide, I think it's important to note that teaching has changed from years ago to teaching in today's environment. TL;DR Those are some things I wish I knew before I entered teaching. Great teachers are definitely needed now more than ever to advocate for their students, and hopefully one day teachers are treated with the respect they deserve. It can be very rewarding and I do think videos like this are important for inspiration. It was nice to see, but the other side of teaching isn't acknowledged enough.

Cute video - and very accurate. You did miss some important points though: BEWARE! the job & the drone work (English essay corrections) never ever end, the work cuts deeply into your family & personal life, you will never take a vacation whenever you want, you will always second guess yourself, some kids can't be saved, you will remember some kids for the rest of your life (+/-), the kids are the best part of the job, some of your fellow teachers are the worst part of your job, you are alone & independent 90% of the time (+/-), you will never ever receive adequate financial compensation for your work, teaching is highly politicized in the public forum and the job is a slow a steady grind that can mess you up you if you're not careful (or at least some of your fellow teachers - better them than you!). My family says that teachers are heavily underpaid and that's true, but if I get to be a teacher and teach a student to love learning, then I've done my job. That, would be a dream come true.

You forgot to mention that you’ll spend many hours over your contract time trying to finish a never ending laundry list of paperwork plus training during summers ....and your check will always be too small. And your student loans will likely be tens of thousands of dollars over your salary. And some parents will love you and at least one will think you’re the devil and will make sure admin knows this. And some kids will drive you to drink, and if you’re terribly unlucky, will be violent. And there’s lockdown drills and anxiety 😔...try answering kids’ questions about school shootings, so yeah, there’s that. And still, like most of us, you’ll continue to show up day after day because 1) you gotta eat, and 2) there are kids who will wrap you around their heart....but, mostly you’ve gotta pay rent.

I struggle with ADHD and I really struggle with math and science but I am excellent with reading/ELA and some social studies stuff. Well I just recently found out that my niece has ADHD as well (she is in first grade btw). The other day I was helping her read and idk what happened but something sparked in my heart when I was helping her sound out the words and it was almost as if I was looking at my younger self but helping out my younger self like most people didn’t do when I was little like her. I’ve always wanted to make a difference and I keep thinking “I should get famous so the whole world can have positivity.” And now I think I know what my calling is. I am only 15 but something has really sparked in my heart recently and I think I wanna know more about it. God bless all of you.

Thank you so much...I'm a new teacher and I experienced the 10-12 first things. Idk if my students love me that much to invite me to their graduation tho... these are so true, I nearly cried. And now because of this I remember my one student who had family problem that broke my heart to pieces and yes I did think of him every single day, seeing how he was a bit skeptical and quiet and didn't want to do presentation AT ALL to be someone who raised his hand at the class when I asked a question was really awesome. I know the struggles of becoming a teacher. I tried to be a teacher for a day, and I had to deal with noisy and rude students and got really mad. And I fear of being hated... I don’t want to be involved in conflicts with students. This is what I feared the most in becoming a teacher.

This was a good video. I am in the process of getting my teaching certification and it’s all becoming more real for me. It’s not that I’m afraid to teach, but more I’m afraid of not knowing what to expect and the journey into the unknown. I’m currently in college working towards a career in early childhood education. I’m also heavily leaning towards teaching children with disabilities. I had a very rough start to my education because of my disability and I didn’t learn how to read until 5th grade. I want to make a difference in the lives of children and I want to make learning as enjoyable and memorable as I can. I did some teacher shadowing during my intro to ed course. I worked with a class of about 10 visually impaired and blind students. During one particular lesson, the students that I was working with said that they loved working with me and hat I made reading fun and exciting. That feeling was so amazing and fulfilling. I told my fiancé that I couldn’t wait for my time as a true educator. It was so overwhelming and this video honestly brought some of those emotions back and made me even more excited to move on and continue towards my goals to be a teacher. Thank you.
