This was amazing! It was just the 'shot-in-the-arm' I needed. I came from a family that didn't encourage you to achieve anything..... and finally at 53, I'm working toward my teaching degree. Doubts and uncertainties always seem to creep into the foreground of my mind (like "OMG what was I thinking?!") ...... but this just reaffirmed to me I'm making the right decision! You Go Girl !!

Karen, this is perhaps one of the top 3 talks I've seen. Not only did I feel inspired as a young 50-something, but I don't feel so bad now about being rejected--just today--by Teach for America. I have classroom and administration experience, was a tutor for several years, ran an afterschool program at five Los Angeles elementary schools, hold a bachelors in business, and am 3 classes away from a masters in leadership! Yet, they passed on me! Keep on moving towards your goals...you will make it:-)

I love this! I am 50 and thank you so much for this encouragement. I do have some teaching experience as a music teacher but have always loved social studies and was never credentialed. Being in California I am now studying for two tests toward applying for a credential program. I feel overwhelmed with my age but what keeps me going is the passion of the subject and the significance of applying it to everyday life. I did receive my bachelor's degree at 47 ...but for some reason turning 50 has given me an extra stumbling block ...but it is wonderful to hear I'm not alone in this goal!!!!

I loved your video Ms. Kellaway!! I retired at 56 years of age after 33 years in Research Science due to back problems and funding issues. After about year and half retired and bored out of my mind, I was approached by a relative to teach Science at a Private Christian high school. At the age of 58 I started teaching AND the first year I was so OVERWHELMED and TERRIFIED for much of the first year but I made it through it!! Finally by the SECOND year I had developed written lesson plans on about 3/4 of the 11 different classes I teach. I JUST COMPLETED my THIRD year and it was EXCELLENT and my Teaching Lesson Plans are fairly well done now and I have achieved CONFIDENCE in the classroom now and I ADORE IT!! The one thing you need more than ANYTHING ELSE to be a teacher, is to have ADVANCED COMPASSION, EMPATHY, and LOVE for people and to be enthusiastic about your subject!! Best of luck fellow SECOND CAREER TEACHERS like us!!

You have all my support.....at the age of 52, I moved to China on a year's contract to teach English after being an accountant for over 30 years. I thought that I was alone in making such a 'drastic' decision so I quite appreciate your experience. I started just last September and am enjoying it tremendously . It feels like I'm on a year's vacation. I don't drag myself out of bed each morning and I have more than enough life lessons to teach my students. Go for it, you will succeed......I am convinced that the difference we will make is that we focus not only on teaching subjects but also on teaching students.

I'm 49 and will turn 50 shortly. Just graduated in August 2023 and work now as an educator. I absolutely love this profession. I did a lot of work when i was young : from clean lady to mechanical engineer. It took me 45 years to get my childhood dream comes true and I'm proud of myself. I love teaching too and i really like my students. It's always fun to teach them. Working with kids and young adults always fulfills me and I'm very grateful for every single day. As an engineer you have to think analytically and as an educator you think and see with your heart and that is what makes this job special ❤

@@learnwithbinh I think I am most confident with the career choices that have enabled me to not have a boss/freelance so I can be available to my kids, particularly when they are/were young...I believe a big part of job satisfaction is if it gives you a lifestyle that you like (for example, if you don't want to work every holiday or out in the blazing heat and beat your body up), and being able to be with my kids and not put them in daycare, and be emotionally engaged in what they are/were going through and have conversations with them, and foster their interests, was important to me. I would be lying if I said there weren't days I wonder what it would be like if I worked full time in an office, bossing people around in a smart suit lol, but what I am choosing is for a very short time in the scheme of things. I think that the notion that we start one career and work with the goal of retiring at 65 is antiquated...I feel like I am excited to get older and experience new things and take my experiences into them. I keep in mind that one day my kids will be older and independent, and I can pick up the pace with what I am doing now (right now I am at an idling pace, freelance writing and working on illustration). I can't really ever imagine "retiring"... I get wanting a break...but till we die?? No thanks!

I started teaching last year at 47 and am loving it. Kids are mean to you the 1st year, but it gets better after that, they know most teachers don’t make it past year one. You do have to figure out for yourself how to manage your classroom, admin only helps with procedure. If the kids don’t see you stand on your own two feet, they will sense the fear and not respect you.

I’ve just recently started working in a high school as an integration aide and love it. I am 57 years old and have worked most of my life as a tradesman. I am now looking at gaining my qualifications to become a teacher. I believe one of the most rewarding things that comes with age and experience is to pass our knowledge on to children. I received an email yesterday from my supervising teacher passing on thanks from a parent for the help I gave their child. I also learned the child had passed the course I was coaching him in. I felt so proud and happy.

Love this video and I can personally relate. I'm 56, have had a very successful business career and find myself 100% in line with your points. I'm in the process of acquiring my certification and look forward to teaching high school business and finance as my new (and final) career. I can't wait to get in the classroom. And you're right, I find myself squarely at Maslow's top point of the pyramid. Thank you for this video.

I was in the computer field, but worked as a teacher assistant teaching English to Spanish speakers from 61 to 69.7. I finished my B.S. at 63, but I did not want a classroom. I wish you the best. I could teach online, but loving retirement.

I've started giving classes at 29, near the end of my bachelor's degree. I was called out-of-the-blue by a person to help giving classes in an animation school. I've never had formal education in my life before, yet as soon as I started, I felt something that I've never had before. For the first time in my life, working became such a relaxing thing for me, talking to a class, explaining things, giving lectures, listening to the group, managing students. I started talking to other people I knew that gave classes before, and a lot of them found it so hard and stressful. Some of them we're doing it for the money, and they quit after a couple of months because they couldn't stand it. At this pont I realized something was odd: Why don't I find teaching so unbearable? What is it with me? And then I realized all those skills that I use to take for granted: my desire for learning, my communication skills, and my great social abilities were being used all at the same time in my job. When you're so happy to work where a lot of people find it so hard, that's probably a good sign that you're at the right place ;).

It is nice to see this in contrast to the "why I quit teaching" videos I have been binging. Lots of pros to teaching to, as long as you get hired at a good school. And I am sure good restaurants and good schools exist, since I went to a great HS and have eaten and great family diner. But at large, finding the right school is a challenge.

This sounds like a great idea. Listen to the TedTalk by Elizabeth White, an MBA from Harvard who wrote "55, Unemployed and Faking Normal" about how she found herself unemployed and no longer wanted by the corporate world. In a way she is now "teaching" others how to plan for their later years. I can see teaching as one area where age should be a good factor.

I think you will be a good teacher, because I believe you really want kids to learn. I don't think you will give up on any of them. one thing most of us have learned in life by our fifties, including me, is that we all learn differently. what works for one student may need a different approach for another student. I think you have the determination find out how each child responds to types of teaching/learning and will adapt to their needs, whatever it takes.

I have been told for literally decades I should be a teacher (I'm 52 now) and doing a forensic psychology degree with Open University (55 when I'm done in 3 more years) I've always wanted to be a math teacher, even started my math degree when my mum passed away suddenly in Canada and I had to quit and go home. Who knows what I will be if I grow up...

Many experienced teachers, over 55, have been forced out of the profession to be replaced by cheaper young teachers ('google' it). Young teachers are often given huge responsibility without having had the advantage of older/ experienced mentors. Many leave teaching, disillusioned, within a few years, hence the teacher shortage.

There are two kinds of students: those who want to be in the classroom and those who'd rather be elsewhere. A great teacher can convert the second type into the first.
