25 years of carbon fiber production at Airbus Illescas plant

25 years ago Airbus began using carbon fiber on its aircraft. The ratio of the material used has grown from less than 10% on the A320 to more than 50% today. The Illescas plant just outside Madrid is a world leader in carbon fiber manufacturing and continues to innovate and look for new solutions to provide lighter aircraft for the future.

I wouldn't say that "in composites there is no fatigue". This concept belongs to 20 years ago. Fatigue in composites exists and thousands of papers have been written reporting the damage evolution of composites under fatigue loading.

+Chris Z. not really, over time you can start getting many of the individual fibers failing, therefor weakening the structure. Cabon fiber doesn't fatigue quite the same as metal, but over time it will weaken

It's not just carbon fibres that fatigue. I feel fatigue just thinking of Mondays.

Fatigue in composites exists but it is not observed within the average lifetime of the airplane. That's why they mention no fatigue. It is true that when cracks appear in the airframe, some tests have observed signs of fatigue but in this case it is the crack itself the failure mode, not the fatigue.

How much carbon are they using for the main load bearing ribs for their fuselage of A400M?

@@black_baron_net to my knowledge the fuselage is made out of mostly aluminium. Only some parts of the wing and the tail are made with carbon fibers.
