How It's Made: Carbon Fiber Driveshafts

Күн бұрын

QA1 has put a lot of effort into creating their carbon fiber driveshafts. QA1's carbon fiber driveshafts are lighter stiffer and safer than steel, aluminum and other carbon fiber driveshafts. Watch how these driveshafts are made in their Lakeville, Minnesota facility.
-----------------------------------
About QA1: Founded in 1993, QA1 specializes in providing performance shock absorbers, suspension components, carbon fiber driveshafts, rod ends, spherical bearings, springs, ball joints and more for a variety of markets, including circle track racing; drag racing; street performance; and street rodding, as well as several industrial markets. Whether you’re looking for improved ride quality, show-stopping appearance, or faster times, QA1 delivers.

Drag vehicles are constantly breaking parts. Pro teams do a full teardown and rebuild of the entire engine and drivetrain between every. single. run. And they still break parts, constantly. It's just part of the fun, pushing everything to the absolute limit. That said, you're definitely right that it's a bit ironic. It's also hysterical how the truck kind of just poops the drive shaft out like a little truck turd.

Yard Sale Dale - I imagine they would perform well in a “daily driver” role since they are designed for much more aggressive applications but it’d be a *_massive_* bit of overkill... it’d be like putting a Bugatti Veyron’s tires on a VW Jetta... you *_could_* do it, but why? If you’re building a race car where every kilogram matters and you’re pushing insane power, then you’d want this.
@grendelum
@grendelum 6 жыл бұрын
Yard Sale Dale - *Speed Academy* has a video showing the swap of a Mustang 2 part driveshaft with a *QA1* carbon fiber one piece shaft... it’s a suped-up daily driver/track day car so I imagine it will work well (they saved 19lbs from the original shaft and lost the slop of the two piece OEM). These are a highly engineered, tested and proven product so they’re well worth the investment *_if_* you’re on the higher end of power. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJeXaoCPrNuBkM0 ← *Speed Academy* video On a side note, an accident in 2003 b0rked my spine and left my right leg completely numb from the nerve damage from my knee to my hip... I need a cane to help my brain know when to expect my foot to come down (it’s *_really_* weird) and a local Florida company *Carbon Canes* set me up with a carbon fiber cane. There’s a *_massive_* difference in the weight of a wood or metal cane compared to carbon fiber and that really saves your wrist from the strain of a traditional cane... plus, that you can see the cool carbon fiber reflections in good lighting and the flames on the bottom make it go *_much_* faster !!!

+Devo We've done exhaustive testing to ensure that the adhesion process is the best it can possibly be. The nice thing about our structural adhesive is that it bears the load over the entire surface to give you incredible strength. We also have engineered our driveshafts so if there is ever a failure (which hasn’t occurred outside of our labs to date), it would be in the middle of the shaft, not at the end.

I watched two of these things get destroyed at ATCO in New Jersey on my friends Z28, the notion that anything other than steel can withstand the enormous forces of a 500+ HP motor is to deny reality, these driveshafts are NOT for high HP applications. If you want to save weight, the driveshaft isn't one of the places to consider, it's the same reason buildings aren't made out of plastic.

Thanks for your question. Our driveshafts are designed to minimize bending to ensure they perform appropriately within the intended RPM range so that there are no issues at your critical speed. Any bending that could potentially happen is detected during our critical speed testing and will vary depending on the construction of the shaft, length of the shaft, as well as other potential variables.

The box is very important with sensitive things as this, there is a separate branch called packaging engineering where you design boxes and foam protection to effectively and safely transfer sensitive items. A badly designed box can cause resonance during transport and destroy the parts inside, so yeah - it is probably better than other boxes would be for this specific product.

I am electrical engineer .I want to repair my aluminium alloy Enduro bike frame, and I want it to bandage the cracked portion in layers of carbon fiber. But I found that the main problem is that the aluminium will corode even faster under the layer of the carbon fiber and basicly will be a failure. Anyone here has any sugestion how to unite the 2 meterials in the best way ? I forgot, that portion has zero flexibility, is the head of the real fork, a 2 cm bar of solit aluminium alloy 7000, so the stifness of the carbon fiber I don't think will be a problem. Any tip will give you 3 karma points ! TYVM :))

Ty ! So there is a solution :) I was thincking to take some samples of 7075, anodize them to prevent corosion and then bandage them in carbon fiber, form like an exo skeleton to cover the area . Then test all pieces for stress ''in the house'' :) I am sure there is a better (easier) solution to repair that 7075 alloy then the standard welding wich I found everywhere '' Posible but not recomended''.

@QA1TECH 3 жыл бұрын
No, they do not. The resin we use to wind our driveshafts is specifically designed for high performance. We did a lot of testing with these before they went to market to ensure that they are strong enough. They are balanced and torsion tested before leaving our facility and our yokes and u-joints are specifically developed to work with our driveshaft bonding, resin, and at the performance level that the shaft provides.

@CanadaBud23
@CanadaBud23 6 жыл бұрын
I did, everyone promotes these things including major facets like hotrod and streetmuscle. One failure I've looked up and it was a hellcat. He was glad his vehicle didn't pole vault down the track with a regular driveshaft. Which I've seen many times. Like I said, they lay fiber with strands not sheets of carbon and it's spinning with high rpm. You don't need a vacuum chamber, there is no bubbles to begin with.
@Reptile789
@Reptile789 5 жыл бұрын
Its not a matter of air bubbles its a matter of too much resin. Apparently they know nothing of fiber to resin ratio. Also the fiber is not wound at the proper angle. You want +/- 45 degree winding angles to maximize torque resistance. You can clearly see in the video that one of the drives shafts starts off with an angle at about give or take 70-75 degrees. Which is really meant for compression, not torque.
@phildunn1983
@phildunn1983 5 жыл бұрын
@@Reptile789 you can't make a sweeping generalisation like that without knowing what the spec of that shaft is. I worked for a company that made competing product to this in the UK and we would often wind at +/- 8 degrees for certain layers. Completely depends upon spec and other things like natural harmonic frequency etc.
