Destin, I really recommend looking at Domino Day, which was a yearly event held here in the Netherlands. Last one was in 2009 and each edition was a combined effort of various European builders, organized by mr Domino himself, Robin Paul Weijers. He was also the one who built and toppled the V field in V for Vendetta. Each year, we'd break the world record of most toppled dominoes. There was only one time where we didn't make the world record, which was in 2007.

Matt Parker from Numberphile was the one that's done the double domino effect with bricks (he went to a building site and asked to use their bricks on their driveway), but he also did a Calculator using Dominos in England for some event. I'd suggest Dustin try and contact Matt about the properties of Domino's, their falling and all the mechanics. Matt will get excited and math at you...

If the dominoes reach a kind of terminal toppling velocity, shouldn't it be relatively easy to get rid of initial variations by just making the line long enough and measuring from a point that's far enough into the line to be sure to have reached that velocity? Either with a light barrier or with the high-speed camera? The line itself can be made consistent over long distances by overlapping the template.

Suggestion. Remember the rig adam savage used to measure the energies of projectiles? Kind of like a miniature swingset with a protractor behind it to measure the angle the swing gets deflected by the projectile hitting the perspex? Construct something similar so that the hammer which will trigger the dominos will have a consistent energy by fixing the angle at which the hammer is released.

So interesting seeing the behavioral changes happening in the setters. If you watch them in the background you can observe the beauty of conservation of energy in every movement and even influences the tools and clothing. I think that the slipping dominoes are faster, because the moment of inertia is smaller if a rectangular body is rotating around its centerpoint [(M*L^2)/12] as opposed to its endpoint [(M*L^2)/3]. This allows it to have higher acceleration. To normalize the initial push, you could just use a small pendulum. All you have to make sure is that it always starts from the same position and that it's always positioned at the same distance from the first domino.

There is a radio called an ELT (Emergency location transmitter) that is activated by a plane crash or manually after a forced landing that transmits a beeping noise. Hearing an ELT go off basically gets everyone's attention, so you really don't want to activated it in a non emergency. But they need to be checked, to make sure they will transmit when you have an emergency so they have specific times of days you can activate one for testing. Of course, if you have a problem during this time, help may be a bit delayed.

How much energy was stored in all those dominos? I really can't estimate that, but it should be calculateable!
@TheRGMGuy017 жыл бұрын
We could give it a rough estimate! If each domino is 8.5g and 48mm tall and we assume uniform mass distribution, the center of gravity is about 24mm off the ground. The gravitational potential energy is mgh = 0.0085kg*9.8*0.024m = roughly 0.002J per domino. Taken by 250000 that gives us about 500J, which isn’t actually a lot, but the real number is probably a good deal higher because dominoes in structures have more potential energy, being higher up, and not all dominoes are at floor level. (However, sonimods are lower to the ground and have less potential, as are mini dominoes). To be honest, that number is so rough I’m not entirely sure it’s on the right order of magnitude. I never was great at Fermi problems :P

Pinball machine plunger for the initiating force. Centrifugal force on the rotation adding more to the exchange of momentum? Also, each domino could act as a lever, so the higher the domino strikes on the next (or the less it slips backward) the more of the force it will add to the next.
