One of the most important things to look at when getting a laptop is the brightness level of the screen. But how bright do you actually need it to be? In this video I talk about my experiences of that and do a bit of side by side comparisons (although these are very hard to showcase in a detailed way).
Please also watch the glossy / matte comparison for some more insights on the topic: • Matte vs Glossy Monito...

Finally a very complete discussion about screen brightness , and laptop selection . I subscribe to all your points except one : My style of work with a laptop indoors does NOT require to cranck the brightness all the way up ,as it will hurt my eyes. Just the minimum amount ( subjective as it may be ) to see it comfortable , have a decent compromise of battery power left vs screen energy consumption. But outdoors use ... thats another story . One needs all the nits you can have ( Cd/square m). So when choosing my next purchase , I will definitely look out for over 400 Nits or more .

Thanks for the info. I have been out of the loop on purchasing new hardware for a bit. It's been a while since I needed make my own decision on what laptop to buy (my previous laptops were provided by my employer, and I had little to no input on what I received). Now that I am looking to purchase on my own device again, I needed help. Your video was a very straight forward explanation of NITS, and is helping me make a well informed decision on what to look for in screen brightness. I have watched several other videos that you have posted, and all have been very helpful. Thank You for your in depth explanations!

Both SpyderX and i1Display would auto recommend around 200 cd/m^2 in a reasonably lit room, that's 200 nits. If you increase brightness to a very high level, it would have an adverse impact on colour accuracy. The most ideal environment for colour critical work is between 120 and 150 cd/m^2, using high brightness setting is a bad habbit.

Clearly you didn't watch the video. It talks about display requirements with respect to ambient light. If you're outside in the sun, you need brighter displays, when in a dimly lit room, turn down the brightness like you see fit. Depends on your usage.

I just answered this question empirically as I started to watch the video. I bought a claimed 500 nit USB 15.6 inch portable monitor and thought, "Gee it isn't as bright as I thought it would be." So I searched KZbin and came here. I was fiddling with the brightness adjustment and looking at the screen for a minute or so, and when I looked back up at this video on my regular laptop monitor (280 nits), I thought, "What happened to it? It's so dark now." I'm in a room with northern exposure facing sliding glass doors (about 9 feet away) on an overcast day. 500 nits isn't too bright for me, but I'm taking it down from 10 (max) to 8.

I bought my very first PC back in December 1998. It came with a 17 inch CRT monitor (15 inch monitors were more common back then). Anyway, after a couple of years or so, my monitor wouldn't go bright enough. It was especially irksome when playing games. I eventually ordered a new monitor. A big one, I think it might have been 19 inches, but still a CRT. I was playing Wolfenstein at the time it was delivered. When I switched to my new monitor, I couldn't believe how transformed the computer game environment looked. I was in a room that I thought was dark. Not on my new monitor it wasn't! Anyway, if I buy a new PC monitor (thinking about an IPS, matte screen and 250 cd/m2 max brightness), would it get less bright over time or was this just a detraction of CRT monitors? I don't like my monitor to be bright at all. On the other hand, I do need to be able to see what's on the screen!

300 nits is absolutely useless to me in a room with any light at all. It's the sole reason I returned the HP x360 14c 14in Chromebook, now, it cost 800 Euro's wasn't cheap, lovely machine but completely let down by the rubbish 300 Nit screen. My 8 year old Dell inspiron has a much better screen. I went to a PC store yesterday to buy a new laptop and they mostly have Intel chips, I want AMD because they're a lot faster, and they only had 8 GB Memory. Even those that had AMD were mostly 8GB unless you spend 1000 Euro's +. The screen on the Galaxy Tab S7+ was much better than the screens on the majority of the laptops I saw in this large PC store with the exception of the Macbooks and the New Surface pro 8 which is a nice machine with a really nice screen but it's ridiculously expensive for the spec and again, only intel CPU. Why has Intel so much dominance on the laptop market ? These days I can't just buy a laptop with 8GB ram and buy more ram and install it, I have to go to the manufacturers site to see if the ram is even upgradeable in the first place. I think laptop manufacturers should be forced to make known whether the memory or even storage of every laptop can be upgraded. Whoever thought buying a laptop in 2021 almost 2022 could be so difficult ? surely it should be the complete opposite ? Sorry, bit of a rant there but I had hoped that I could have walked into a major PC store and buy a decent laptop in 2021 that costs less than 1500 Euro's. And researching screen brightness brought me here :-)

I have question in your experience,do these budget gaming or productivity laptops which cut costs in screen which have poor accuracy and poor panels used if you use these panels compared to a good display laptop which has high resolution in long usage does the budget laptops cause more eye strain (or headache)compared to the good laptop screens,sorry my question is quite long. (I am planning to buy a laptop that has great screen but cut cost on other specs so...)
@InfiniteTranscendence
@InfiniteTranscendence Жыл бұрын
If you care about eye strain, I would stick with IPS LCD and make sure it has no PWM. That is your best bet. You also want to keep your contrast levels higher so the text is easier to read and have the brightness just right so you're not straining to see but you also don't have the light glaring at you.

Yeah not enough people talk about this... I had a laptop rated at 300nits but in use it only could do about 260nits... It was pretty bad.... even tho it was a 300hz panel... Another thing that people don't realize is usually if you have bad brightness other things on the screen will also be bad.. like poor contrast and poor color gamut... When you add up all those bad things yeah the laptop is "usable" but it's not really enjoyable to use or watch stuff on........ I upgrade the panel on my laptop and it's like having a new laptop...... Everything just looks better ...

The ''reflection'' problem exists on matte too. If you tilt the display at certain angles, you're going to be greeted with botches of bright light spots on the display as it diffuses the light and makes it pretty hard to read the text. Its a laptop. Not a desktop monitor. Just adjust the display/laptop a bit and you're good to go. I've never faced this reflection issue despite using a glossy OLED laptop and setting it at ~300nits. We do need more glossy options on laptops since they produce better and sharper image quality compared to most matte displays.

After being used to flagship smartphones no laptop is bright enough for outdoor use! I never had problems reading my phone screen in summer daylight through sun glasses since the Galaxy S7/S8 but even the best laptops today can't reach that brightness 🙄 or even a brightness that is usable without sun glasses. Even midrange phones these days beat them hands down.

W2Test Tech, Thank you so much for putting this content out, there really isn't much on this subject. A little bit of feedback.. For a 11min video. There was only around 60-90 seconds of demotrating the differences. I'd of liked to seen more camera shots of the different screens, maybe in different light conditions? I do feel a slightly wider camera angle would help your audience connect with you better as they can see your body language and gesters. Also maybe some chapters too BUT overall - super clean edit and your audio is very good!!!😄

Thanks for the review, and in case of a monitor? Its for a home office, I work with Excel, text and reports. For a matte and VA screen, are 300 nits enough?, I like to work in a lightness room and white backround. What would you recommend me? Thanks!

300 nits is enough - also for color accuracy. My LG Prof. Monitor ist limited to 350 nits but I operate it at 60 to 70 % in a light south faced room
