I only have 1 gas operated Stihl saw, my MS 361 and it is a maniac, but I use the Stihl battery operated 220 all the time. For me and my wife who are in our late 60's, it runs long enough cutting through the dead ash on our farm. I carry it on my tractor and go back in the woods, pull out the trees, cut them in 8 foot lengths and carry them up to my farm to be cut up. We heat with wood, so we do cut up about 5 cord per year, not the amount you do. We really like your down home videos and they are fun to watch.

Makes sense if you have trimmers and blowers using the same battery to have the whole lineup. I was never impressed with battery saws but now the higher end ones seem to be pretty solid. I use battery edgers and trimmers already might need to get a lineup. I have gas trimmers and all too just got sick of the weight when my battery powered ones are just so much lighter but I have to change batteries a couple times each time I use them don't like that to much but it saves my back with the weight difference. Husqvarna has their 120 think the model is right now you get a free battery when you buy the saw. I would prefer the Stihl but when you get a free battery that I think cost like $100 its pretty tempting to give one a try.

Mike, thanks for this demo. I have a nearly new MS250 and have real problems starting it. The pull cord hangs and will not extend to start the saw. I have a friend who sold his saw because he couldn't start it. I am wondering if there are others who would benefit from the battery saw due to the problems in starting their gasoline saw. The batteries are the expensive part of the saw, but other than that I would love to have one.

Good video, and they are an amazing little saw. And that's a lot of wood from 1 charge .The more you use them, the more you want to use them. And that's all Softwood. I use mine to cut a fair bit of Aussie Hardwood and it never ceases to amaze me with what it's able to get through......I was in the Husqvarna shop last weekend buying some parts for my brushcutter, and a bloke came in to see if the new bar for his chainsaw turned up. It hadn't, on back order. He was disappointed. I ended up selling him an equivalent Husqvarna Battery Chainsaw from the customer side of the counter, based on my experience of the MSA 200C.....The people running the Shop thought it was somewhat strange, the only thing they had to do was tell him how much it was.

My wife and I bought an electric mower for the cottage with two batteries we are able to trim 2 acres (very light no fumes) where the zero turn can’t reach. IMHO you don't have "a little over a third of a cord" in that pile. I use a '99 Tacoma to haul my firewood, and it holds a quarter of a cord when it's loaded to the edge of the bed (4 rows of 16 inch wood). I am quite certain that pile of wood would not fill my truck. For the test it would have been nice if you had constructed a measured rack to determine what the saw was capable of cutting. Nice review of the saw, which is what I was looking for. And I liked seeing you stack the wood on 2X4's. It drives me nuts to see wood stacked directly on the ground!!!
@bendigr6 жыл бұрын
that is definitely cutting better. i think it can do even better. though. Did you sharpen it with a 2in1 sharpener? maybe just start with a new chain? who know what those demo cuts put it through.

Mike I have checked on the battery powered MSA 200 C chain saw. Was told the battery lasted 35 minutes, no matter what the cut! My question, refers to the battery powered pole saw used in the front yard to trim. Have not seen that at the Stihl store. Have you tried the Stihl combo set yet? It has the gas powered head, and the attachments are numerous! I was interested in the pole saw and blower attachment's. Stihl claimed the blower will blow a brick!

I own this saw for 3j now. Works great besides my heavy sihl saw. Two things; 1.the chain must be REALLY sharp all the time or it just wont do the job. 2.in the summer the battery sometimes over heat when pushing thru, you have to wait to let it cool. And the price is high when it is your first battery powered stihl tool. But when used to it... I replaced all machines like trimmers etc with this type. Only one big stihl saw I kept. Greeetz

I made the switch to electric tools and I am never looking back. So much easier to maintain, no more ethanol carburetor problems. One note: I think electric chain saws may be a bit more dangerous. If you accidentally drop the blade into your apron chaps, they just don't cut out like a gas engine. Question: Do you think you could cut continuously if you had two batteries where one is always charging? Thanks!

Never really considered a battery saw. My parents bought one a couple years ago for them to fart around with but the thing is nearly useless. Might have to buy one of the Stihl battery saws for them to have around. I prefer my Stihl saws but I have a few Husqvarna, Makita and a couple others but I see the Husqvarna 120 think the battery saw model is, right now if you buy one they give you a free battery. Tempting when I think the batteries are 1/3 the price of the saw. I do have a Redmax saw on the way now I just ordered that is the same as the Husqvarna 439 which is just a rear handle version of the 435T top handle saw for a nice lightweight saw to use when I am not using my 026 Pro, Makita DCS6421, or Husqvarna 372xp which are the saws I use the most. I have a couple other smaller saws but they are all homeowner Stihl or Husqvarna saws and I don't think any are as light as this Redmax. I guess they consider it a "farm and ranch" saw but its still probably a bit heavier duty then something like the Stihl 017 I have. If I like it I might buy that cheaper top handle saw that this is the rear handle version of since its only $299. I would rather buy Stihl but that is a pretty good price for a top handle saw when I don't need the best top handle I sure am not going to be climbing trees with it.

For those who aren’t familiar with batteries, voltage doesn’t measure power or capacity to do work or chain speed. It does allow for thiner wires and smaller motors. Multiply the voltage of your saw by the amp hour rating to get power, or watt hours. Watt hours is the indicator that tells you how much potential wood you can cut before switching batteries. Switching batteries isn’t a big deal like fueling up with gas, but it's nice not to have to switch. Here’s some data I’ve acquired: One Milwaukee 18V (nom) 12Ah battery weighs 3.7 lbs. (18)x(12) = 216 watts One Husqvarna 36V (nom) 4.2 Ah battery weighs 3.21? lbs (36)x(4.2) = 151 watts Makita is complicated because it takes two standard tool batteries of any amp hr rting. They all weigh about the same. Two (2) Makita 18V (nom) 6 Ah batteries weigh 2.7 lbs. (2)x(6)x(18) = 216 watts. Makita also runs on 5, 4 and 3 Ah batteries with progressively lower run times with the same approximate weight. Thicker 9 Ah after market batteries are also available, that would allow 2x9x18 or 324 watt hours. One Dewalt 54V (nom, not max) 4Ah battery weighs 3.2 lbs (54)x(4) = 216 watts One Stihl with 36V 4.9 Ah battery weighs 3.8lbs (36)x(4.2) = 178 watts One Stihl with 36V 6.3 Ah (AP 300) weighs 3.8lbs (36)x(6.3) = 226 watts One Greenworks 80V 4 Ah battery weighs 5.5 lbs (80)x(4) = 360 watts One Greenworks 80V 2 Ah battery weighs 2.8 lbs (80)x(2) = 160 watts One Redback 120V 3Ah battery weighs 4.0 lbs (120)x(3) = 360 watts

Why do you continue to load / unload wood by hand rather than using the the log ox “hauler” since you first introduced it some videos back? I got one a couple weeks ago (just the basic log hauler part, since I have a separate jack / roller), after seeing you and others talk about it, and have been using it a lot when splitting and moving wood. So far it slows me down a little vs. picking up by hand, but it reduces strain on my back, which will hopefully help keep me doing this work for many years to come. Plus, it’s SUPER handy for grabbing logs out from a thrown pile, or for recovering them from a cruddy / muddy spot.

Mike I’ve been watching your videos for over a year now and I don’t think it’s fair to call this saw the real deal. It is not as effective and efficient as other gas powered chain saws and I’m sure we can agree on that. It is good for a truck saw are the right words for it

Hey Mike how about testing the saw cutting Greenwood. Probably takes more battery life to cut that dry wood it's so hard. Take care and be safe out there buddy.
