Lay piece of sand paper a flat surface and smooth the sanding block. That's how I do it. Been sanding and painting cars and deisel trucks for fourty years.

I really fell in love with this channel, I am only 21 and have been playing since I was seven, as my father got me into it at a young age (Appalachian people love their music and guitar has been in the family for generations). Of course he always taught me how to take care of a guitar, but it's awesome watching someone take such good care of these beautiful instruments and taking the time to teach us something along the way! Thanks for your amazing content and passing on your process to the younger generations. I can't thank you enough! I wish your family well, have a great one!

Great video(s) The song at the end was the icing on the cake. My Dad played and sang that song quite often. He went to be with God three years ago and it was wonderful to hear you play and sing that song.....memories!

Sanding block fix. Put masking tape on the block side that you sand with. Put masking tape on the back of the sand paper. Put CA glue on the back of the sanding block and glue the masking tape side of the sandpaper to it. When the sandpaper is worn out, it just peels off and then you can start the process over. Having the sanding paper wrapped around like you're doing in the video creates a rounded paper and is not as flat as you need it. When you glue it to the masking tape, it is flat and you get a nice sanding job. This works great with radius blocks when doing frets.

For sanding block - cut your paper down to size and use double stick tape to hold it to the block. That way there is no curling at the end of the block and the paper sits perfectly flat on it.

The Gibson truss rod system was invented in 1921. You quickly see it used in the mandolins but I am not sure when all the guitars had one installed- it took a few years. That bridge appears to be a Harmony guitar bridge as the wheels stay down on the threaded posts as the bridge top goes up. Great work, Jerry it was a pleasure to watch you in action.

My tip is; I buy Thick soft rubber sheets (moosgummi) from a hobby store, I double stick the sanding paper on (the hobby shop also has great double stick sheets). Then I cut pads to size. By using a very sharp small boxcutter, the pads make perfect wetsanding tools. Great for small repairs. Completely even sanding!

I often think its easier to build a new guitar/banjo than repair an abused one however hearing that ring for the first time of the finished repaired instrument is always a smile knowing its one less for the scrap and who knows you might even get a pat on the shoulder from the original maker where ever they are .Good job

As always, a great restoration without making it new. My dad was a radio repair guy since 1947 and in the last 20 years of his life (passed away at 90) he restored hundreds of old radios. When finished everyone of them showed their 70 plus years of age, but played and sounded as good as the day their were built. Not new, but as you say Jerry, "well cared for."

I used to work at Regal Plastic supply in Oklahoma City. I did plastic fabrication. I'm not sure what type of plastic that pickguard is made of but after running it through the thickness sander you might have tried a product that we used called Novus Plastic Polish. They make polishes for anything from tiny scuffs to pretty deep scratches. Google Regal Plastic Supply in Oklahoma City and call them. The sales team is really knowledgeable and can reccomend which Novus product to buy. The stuff is amazing

Nice work, Jerry. I almost mentioned something the other day. I used to refinish old gunstocks. The best I ever did was TruOil, but the point was I built up the finish, then cut it down with Behlen's oil & rottenstone. The heavy oil is in a squeeze bottle, the rottenstone is in a shaker can. A smooth, satin finish. Worked for me. Thanks for the excellent videos!

I keep t shirt cotton with me when sanding at high grit to take the build up off. When you wipe the sandpaper on the cotton, there's a little tooth to it which helps remove the buildup. Doesn't always work great but it helps more often than not.
