I love Hunter R's videos so much! I only played city folk but his deep dives into the intricacies of the code in AC games is fascinating, I'd put him up there with game makers toolkit ability to explain game development to people who have no knowledge of it.

You’re doing YIIk a great disservice. I.V. Completely changes the story and adds at least 5 hours of new content that completely changes the tone and context of the entire game, and has a built-in sequel inside of it. You should still check it out.

Congrats on 25k! Silly extra question : what’s the craziest/coolest/most memorable thing that happened when you attempted the Threed tent glitch? I actually managed to get the debug menu once, and another time it broke the game so badly that even the SNES Classic Mini that I play on sent me a warning message, it was quite scary 😅

Running shine made the best YIIK video? Didn’t that guy not know you could speed up battles and use time energy for more damage on Alex’s beatdown until the gothic entity?
@Moud_MКүн бұрын
So, does this really contradict his critiques? The first point, sure. The second point just means that the player will be even more reliant on Alex for battles, which just makes the balance of the party members non-existant. Also, I wouldn't blame him for not figuring this out when the game's cutscenes buried actual useful information under sheer word vomit disguised as establishing characters or world building. (Maybe this was included in the loading screen tips, but a lot of those are as equally useless as the padding in the cutscenes)
@Moud_MКүн бұрын
I forgot that time energy is supposed to be used for both attacking AND defending. So you'll not always have access to it if you need to focus on avoiding taking damage/reducing damage which in turn slows the battle down since the enemies have too much HP when you can't use time energy for attacking.
@chippedgoatКүн бұрын
@Moud_M 1. It does, those are just some quick examples. the entire video is shoddily made and misses so much important stuff about the game, its like when he played it, he refused to pay attention to anything, to key shit stuff that is right in front of him, he makes a weird critique that the beginning of the game that he hates how the game starts because the main character just "falls into the plot" and that he wants more characterization for alex and he wants to "like him", as he monologues to dali, and what's funny is this monologue basically spells out what kind of character alex is, He is a dumb privileged reddit man guy who when he finds a cat, instead of walking up to pet it, he crafts a narrative in his head about a whole life he has lived with this cat, your supposed to find these monologues funny because, in the real world, He is just staring at some cat making up dumb shit in his mind, and that perfectly with what he does the entire game, crafting narratives in his mind about people he has met or not met, I can understand on a first playthrough not getting the whole game, it takes time to really digest the narrative of yiik, but considering running shine likely spent weeks/months reviewing scenes, its like he hardly through about the narrative and what it is trying to say. People want more "show dont tell" in their narratives, and YIIK is full of things it "shows you" but never directly "tells you" Is it a wordy game? Sort of, but alex is a really interesting character to listen to, because if you break down what he is actually saying he often times lies or says some really strange stuff. and on top of that, I just find him funny to listen to, I can maybe see it not being for everyone, but to say its bad is something else entirely. 2. Hear me out you can get time energy by getting hit, so yes, you can use time energy to help with dodging attacks but alternatively you can have rory (or just have high hp) protect alex/the party, have rory take tons of damage, so you can return tons of damage on alex/Claudio's turns. its a rersoce management game. I hear people all the time bitch and complain that "yiiks combat is too slow" but they play through battles so inefficiently that I just wonder does running shine go through rpgs without thinking/experimenting? It just bothers me when a high profile youtubers claim to spend 10-20 minutes on certain boss fights, when they play in the worst most inefficient way possible. Now a common retort may be, well its the games fault for not tutorizing these things, and its like, okay, I can get missing things on a first playthrough, god knows as a kid playing mario and luigi, all I did was just upgrade HP because I had no clue I could scroll down on the level up menus, I dont really think its the games fault in this case here because I was a moron and did not press the down button or wonder "hey why can I only upgrade this one stat" Its a review, should you not be at least more informed instead of spreading miss information? I just find it kinda stupid to get your critiques from someone who can not be bothered to pay attention to anything.

@@chippedgoatThe game tries to get you to experiment and engage with it's combat by having Rory, Chondra and even Essentia playing different to the rest of the more offense/status based party members, I get that. But it is still isn't logical. Purposefully taking damage to use time energy to be able to dodge easier will just lead to a character dying more often when a player is simply trying to gauge how much damage an enemy deals. I appreciate YIIK tried to have a unique combat system but just like the minigames they clearly didn't work out since it was too cumbersome of a problem for many players to understand. If you could simply convert hp into time energy manually, then yes it takes away the "resource management" aspect but it keeps the thrill and rewards players by wanting to engage with the combat system, while punishing greedy/overextending players. YIIK, by design, is the video game equivalent of wanting to have your cake and eat it too. Yes the cutscenes and Alex's signagure rambling do offer great insight into his thoughts patterns and perception, which also allows people to see themselves in him which is one of the actual good themes in YIIK. But Alex isn't well written, and yes he does make mistakes and acts on impulse for the sake of the narrative and his own character arc (The "Oops, I fell into the plot" criticism steps from that frustration of Alex being both an active and passive character that never has justification when he seemingly switches behaviours for no reason, not helped by how isolated the voice acting feels.). Why does it take until the end of the game for Alex to start questioning why he even wants to save Sammy in the first place? Alex never displaces this much altruism of his own accord, as those moments are when the player decides for him (through the minimal amount of dialogue choices) so it is very hypocritical and lazy writing when the game prides itself on being a nuanced and post-modern rpg but Alex's motivation for most of the game is just boiled down to "save the girl" and his development stems solely from his own endless monologuing or other people berating him until he gives in. The novelty of everything YIIK aims to do is void, as instead of building on the ideas and themes as the game progresses, the devs just keep repeating setpieces until something new is added. It is frustrating that the game's better moments are overshadowed by it's tone-deaf moments, but if the game didn't have the merit of being "so bad it's good" it would have simply sunk to the bottom of indie releases and be forgotten. That is why something like Running Shine's video was inevitable. Since yes you can break down and analyse everything YIIK gives you to engage with, but if the game just spoonfeeds the entirety of its messages and ideas to you anyways and doesn't have the decency to discuss important topics like racism and suicide (specifically the infamous "Rory's sister" scene) with any tact, then there isn't much left to interpret is there?
