I can't remember if it was gamecube or DS, but one of them it was really easy to get gifts, even with gibberish letters. I think it was either using the catchphrase they use, or putting a gift in the letter? I'd just send all letters spamming 'a' and always get a gift back.

THIS IS THE BEST PART OF KZbin. Videos that investigate a long-held interesting question we forgot we had. I LOVE how devs back then had to come up with this stuff. I'm guessing that modern games with a letter reply system use some standardized formula and don't have to be creative? Or they don't have time to code a system like this, so they make all responses generic.

Sounds like an out of bounds read primitive, which, in a general sense, is something you usually need for ACE, but because the value simply alters the outcome of this trigram check it probably isn't extremely useful. These kinds of errors are the kind you need to look out for when looking into ACE, so your instincts are on the right track.
