I remember sitting in the theater during this ending, feeling like Monty hadn't earned it but that I would grant the film this departure from reality because the film had earned it. Then to return from the dream and see him going to prison once I as a viewer had granted the film this move, just shattering. From start to finish, one of the most powerful, moving, rich, personal film experiences I've ever had. Just so beautiful. Thank you for posting.

Finished the movie now, haven't seen it in ages. I think this is Spike Lee's magnum opus. Like really, it can't possibly do a better job of capturing the whole cultural zeitgeist and vibe of that era, young people of that era while being a great, moving and poignant story too. It's beautifully shot, well acted, great music, great direction and this finish just floors you. You feel it. This movie is no bullshit, it lays it all on the table. It's upfront, in your face and honest and really clear-minded in what it wants to say, how and why. Honestly, I know Chicago won best picture Oscar for 2002 and Gangs of New York were in contention too, but I think this is the film that should've taken the top prize home. Spike Lee has never been better and more on point and here, he was also more mature as an artist/director than he was in Do the right thing.

The whole movie is Monty trying to avoid the consequences of his actions. The fact that he's finally able to go to sleep is Monty finally accepting his fate, and not running away.

@@marcusweber7436 Actually, the whole movie is Monty accepting the consequences of his actions, but his friends/family pretending otherwise to his face - he takes care of his dog, accepts prison, he doesn't rat Nikolai out, he has one last party with his friends, admits he blew it to his girlfriend and tells her to move on. Monty knew he's finished. When Frank tried to promise him in the bar he'll hook him up once his sentence is over, Monty wasn't buying into it. He knows his life is over. It's his friends and family who pretended otherwise to his face to soften the blow. And the ultimate fantasy and pretending comes at the end from Monty's dad. Who constructs an alternative life fantasy just in an attempt to rretain some hope forr his son. Monty meanwhile dozes off, because he got his affairs in order, he is going to prison and that's it. Monty blew it as he says to Naturelle at the end. He could've almost had a good life similar to that his father was imagining, he almost had it. But he won't.

Such a brilliant scene. We all know that the movie was a period piece of post 9/11 New York, but this scene works because it demonstrates how New Yorkers should stick together and always remember who they are in the roughest of times. They should move forward with their lives but never forget the past. It's an analogy on nostalgia, change and tragedy, made all the better by Spike Lee's impressive directing chops. On its own and as an allegory to New York after 2001, it absolutely delivers.

I think he went to jail. I don't care about the direction of the car, you can turn around any time. He's thinking about it. His dad is even urging him, but not to do it - but to understand why he should want to. But in the end, it's just car talk. Now. Monty can't let himself be truly happy, accept his own life and really live it - so he carts himself off to jail. His father's words likely haunt him for the rest of his life - and he becomes a model prisoner, he stops worrying about being in jail, about his life, about making friends. Gets his act together. He was in for 7 years. He'll be out in 5, maybe less. The question then will be return to that life, or really start living then. And these words will be all he has, because his father will likely be gone by then, and his father knows it. The important part is not what happened - but what it means to Monty to hear it, and him wishing he'd heard this speech many years ago. He's too tired, scared, and broken to respond - but those words will stick with Monty whether he likes it or not, no matter where he goes. Just like it will with anyone who ever watched the film.

the only thing I don't get is it's only a 7 year sentence. with good behavior he could be out in 3-4 years. when you consider he wasn't going to be able to contact his girl for at least 3 years (and even then there is risk that someone tracks her and in turn tracks him down) would have made more sense if the sentence was like 25-30 years. a girl might wait 3-5, shit even the full 7 years, but I doubt she would if he is looking at a min of something like 15

I was about to write the same thing. He was also going to a federal prison which is a cake walk compared to a state prison. I think the target audience for this movie was high school school cavage so they don't expect them to think into it that much. His girlfriend was supposed to be a teenager when they met just kind of disgusting when you think about it.

@@SeckinGuler-Music I watched the movie. The guy is resourceful and street smart. So 3-5y is manageable. Why risk such a short stint, by running? If the guy was soft or it was a longer stint (anything 15y and over) I would totally get cause there is a tipping point where you spend too much time inside people will move on, but 3-5years isn't that lengthy in terms of asking the people on the outside to not move on from you. To me it's just a silly risk cause if you really are gonna run and then contact her you can't just wait a month. You're gonna have to wait a good while to reach out. If you don't you are likely gonna lead the cops right to wherever you are. So that means going no contact for nearly as long as the time out would have spent in jail (if you got good behaviour) If I'm on the run I'm not sending message to my brothers or an ex for at least 3 years. Not even with current technology. But if we are being honest if I got in that type of shit I'm not ever contacting them again. They would understand.

I just watched this movie again last for the 3rd or 4th time, but I saw something that I've never seen before that blew me away. Towards the end when he was in the car with his dad and he sees the boy on the bus next to them, pay attention to his left shoulder and notice the ball of light exiting the car. No, it's not an insect, so don't come back with that nonsense. These balls of light are often seen where something or someone is being haunted. I would bet money Norton never even saw it. I found another one on the TV show Homeland too. That one is over Brody's left shoulder when he's in the bathroom stall trying to fix his suicide vest. That one even changes color!
