5:46 "If it's stinky, we don't drinky!" 🤣 I definitely agree on the dates thing. If there's no noticeable degradation of quality, why waste it? That said, if it looks/smells funny or its efficacy is reduced (i.e. a leavening agent that doesn't activate), throwing it out is justified.

I like the idea of the cardboard grocery lists cut from cereal boxes. I end up finding a crumpled paper in my purse a week later that was one of my grocery lists. I might have to cut my cardboard pieces a little wider, though. As far as thinking if you really need to buy a certain item, a couple of times, I realized I have something at home that will serve the same purpose as the thing I ALMOST bought.

We have been weeding items from our grocery list. Almost nothing I buy is moderately to heavily processed. I use bank envelopes for my grocery lists. Coupons are unnecessary when most of your groceries are fruits and vegetables. I make my own cleaning products. Thats about as processed as it gets (generic Dawn mixed with vinegar, e.g.).

I’ve started using bar shampoos and conditioners because I have arthritic hands, and squeezing or shaking the heavy plastic bottles is painful. Yes, they cost more initially (I get mine at CVS when I have a 35-40% coupon), but they last a lot longer, and work well.

Another tip I’d like to share is based off of tip #1 that I do all the time and it has reduced my grocery bill tremendously! As I’m shopping, if I see a product I like, I say to myself “can I make this?” If the answer is yes (and most of the time it is), then I just buy the raw ingredients to make it. For example, I don’t buy any bread or bread products any more. Instead I buy wheat berries and mill my own flour (I started out buying flour and then graduated to milling my own 😊) and use mostly sourdough but also keep some dry active yeast on hand. I make regular bread, sandwich bread, bagels, crackers, biscuits, etc. same with jams and nut butters (just buy fruit (fresh or frozen) and nuts), gummies, marshmallows, snacks, sauces, gravy, bone broth, yogurt, cheese, and so much more. Same with hygiene and household items. I make bar soap, shampoo, hair rinse, body butter, dish soap, all purpose cleaner, etc. I know it sounds like a lot of work but it really isn’t if you do a little at a time and most of the time it’s the “waiting “ that takes the most. For example when I make yogurt, it takes me maybe 20 mins of active time and 20 hours of just waiting for it to incubate and set which I don’t need to do anything for or when I make bar soap, takes about 30 mins of active time and 4-6 months of curing time. I work a full time job and have been able to do all this too so it’s not impossible. As for the “how to”…. I just do my own research and test different recipes to see which I like best. There is SO much on KZbin, but do your research and use common sense because not all KZbinrs put out good material. So just pay attention to the raw materials being used (healthy vs chemicals and toxic) and do your own research.

@@frugalcreativeliving I’ve always worn eyeglasses and/or contacts but in recent years have switched to only wearing glasses. I could’ve saved so much money back in the day. I played my coupons and holiday discounts right & got 2 pair for $20 a couple of years ago. I usually save stuff I like to my wish list and purchase only if the frames go down to $1 - $3. Something the frames go down to $0. I’ve ordered from Zenni, Zeelool and Vooglam. Vooglam even has sunglasses that fit over your prescription eyeglasses alleviating the need to spend money on prescription sunglasses but you can order prescription sunglasses from those sites.

Thank you so much for the info! I recently mentioned to someone I know that it would be cheaper to switch to glasses instead of spending about $75 every 4 months on contacts. But I guess for some people, it's worth the extra expense not to have to keep up with the glasses.
@dyoung2739

@@frugalcreativeliving I liked contacts when I lived in a major U.S. city because I felt safer that I was able to see at all angles in heavy traffic. So I’d wear eyeglasses if I was driving somewhere near my house but if I was taking the long commute to work,to an event, etc, I’d wear contacts. Now that I’ve moved to a smaller town,it’s 100% eyeglasses.

Tip for digital coupons: clip ALL of them because you can make surprise savings. I usually shop for other people and I’ve gotten surprise cash back and ofc regular savings on a handful of store trips. I used to work at a store with these digital coupons and sometimes I’d use my own coupons to help customers out and when they’d get their discount I’d sometimes get $1-$5 in cash back for a different product they were buying! Then add that with the extra veggies to make my daughter homemade tv dinners. She would squall and stomp her feet ( only at home) that she wanted the store bought tv dinners her friends had. Just about a year ago ( when she turned 40) she actually admitted to missing easy dinners that were so good.

I honestly don't know why I am doing this now. I think I am doing it because it makes me sleep longer and because Dunkin donuts coffee tastes better, maybe that's why I am buying their coffee daily.

If it's not getting in the way of any other financial goals you have, then it might just be one of those little pleasures you allow for yourself. But if it's contributing to you not being able to save enough money or have enough for more important things, then just grab a $10 coffee maker from Walmart along with the Dunkin Donuts coffee grounds and get back to making it yourself. That's the coffee I use in my Keurig along with a reusable k-cup.

I have one more, as a business major, with a minor in economics, I learned a lot about how things were placed in the store. The racks up front, the end caps and stuff in your way always costs the most. Still, you don’t have to go to college to figure out the easiest to reach Items are the most expensive. I go by what I call the “ Up, down and middle rule”. Simply put the stuff at eye level is going to cost the most. Next is the stuff on top to get a better value, while the stuff on the lower shelves are going to be where you find the best deals.

My husband liked to carry cash and no coins. Everyday, he came home and put the change on a tray and I collected it. When my son was in elementary school, I would have him help me count it and put it into rolls. This helped him learn 4 quarters equal $1, 10 dimes equal $1, 20 nickels equal $1 and 100 pennies equal a $1. Yes, it took time but once he owned that skill, then I dropped the coins off at a bank branch that counted the coins for me.

My grocery store offers points. The point do expire after a couple of months. The points can be cashed for products, gasoline or dollars of my grocery total. This week I had 1111 points. I got $4 off, 1 dz eggs free, 1 gallon of milk free and 1 (30oz) rotisserie chicken free for 1100 points. The savings on the “free” products was $6.99 + $3.99 + $3.99=$14.97, I used 700 points for an additional savings of $7.97. My sister shops the same store, spends more than I do and just lets her points expire. 🤦‍♀️ it takes 2 mins to log in, click and send to card. That is like seeing a $20 bill on the ground and not bothering to pick it up.

I must say, she is definitely one of the best out there. Her expertise as a registered investment advisor is unparalleled and she is well-versed in the financial market. I had the pleasure of meeting her once during a trading conference in Oklahoma, and it was clear that she knows her stuff.

I would advise people who are single and or child free to get an overnight sleep job. Check in the area you live & see if they have any positions available for sleep positions. These jobs are primarily in the health care field but it’s extra money for something you are doing anyway

Butter has a lot of saturated fat. It's best to consume less butter. Add in some olive oil, it is a healthier alternative 🫒

Thanks! I actually use olive oil for all of my cooking and a vegetable oil "butter" spread for toast, pancakes, baking cookies and flavoring my veggies. Thanks for the advice!

It’s only better if the olive oil is cold pressed during processing.

Is there an app that will tell you not only how long unopened goods last, but how long opened goods last in the fridge? The usual stuff (milk, butter, bread), and the unusual (like flour, yeast, hemp, flax seed and chia seeds).

I dont know about an app, but I've used these two resources for refrigerated/frozen/cooked foods. REFRIGERATOR & FREEZER STORAGE CHART www.fda.gov/media/74435/download HOW TO STORE COOKED FOOD www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-store-cooked-food-leftovers-6746490 For unopened foods, I don't have a site I reference regularly, but I would imagine you could find something online.
