Humans have “taste receptors” in their digestive tracts, urethra, and testicles as well as a few other places in the body. These are mainly connected to autonomic regulation functions for release of enzymes and other substances. They really are just a chemical binding site connected to the nervous system. So these receptors are not truly affiliated with taste, they just share a common mechanism for operating as reuse of common structures is biologically efficient.
@Blasted2Oblivion8 ай бұрын
Your statement may be more scientifically accurate but I am still going to share the simple version first to reel people in to the science.
@biiill5259Күн бұрын
Interestingly all these chemical receptors are reactive to at least one chemical regardless of location. Capsaicin. The spicy chemical
@LogicalNikoКүн бұрын
@ this is because it triggers the vanilloid receptor 1. This receptor detects vanillin and many other similar shaped substances. But this receptor also in one of the receptors that can sense temperature and physical sensation. This demonstrates how biologically there are a lot of unusual overlaps in receptors that developed more on their efficiency of function over specific segmenting of duties. So what Capsaicin does is it basically locks in to the receptor having a shape that’s similar to vanilla, but it causes an overdrives this receptor. It’s basically causing it to stay in an excited state and keep firing, this causes it to register all the sensations of taste, physical irritation, and temperature all at once. Basically chili peppers evolved a perfect defense mechanism to stop mammals from eating their fruit.

An interesting fact about the brain (which feels rather appropriate given the setting of this season) is that its constantly undergoing a process called phagocytosis (or pruning), where essentially it eats itself. The brain's cells will consume smaller cells and molecules to help preserve your grey matter and get rid of unneeded neurological connections. (Edit: spelling)
@dark_neverland10 ай бұрын
This makes sense since all the cells in iur body, outside the heart & lungs, if i remember correctly, regenerate every 7 years. I always wondered what the heck the brain did
@Pablo360able6 ай бұрын
The immune system also uses phagocytosis to deal with virii and bacteria, and tattoos hijack this process - immune cells "eat" the tattoo ink, but can't break it down, so they just... stand there, menacingly. It's why tattoos last as long as they do and don't fade or bleed nearly as fast as they otherwise might.
