Join me for a day in the life of a doctor on a 26 hour call shift during the coronavirus pandemic. You will experience what it's like to be a senior internal medicine resident on call overnight. We will be seeing suspected cases of coronavirus, managing patients on the ward and seeing new patients in the ER department. Plus, you'll learn about pneumonias, pleural effusions and thoracetensis!
HUGE thank you to the Jaymee, Tian, JB, the entire allied health team and Grand River Hospital for their support and participation!

I remember having to be at school at 7:20 am ON THE DOT. hated it, now I sleep in. I could never imagine wanting to wake up and go to work at the same unholy hour for a living! It's great what these people do! The little things like waking up so early for a job like this, to have the motivation and energy, I could never. I wish best of luck to all essential workers, and especially to those working up close with the virus! All of y'all are masked heroes! (Literally).

Dr Siobhan doesn't go to work very early. Every so often she does a long overnight shift like the other residents. I don't know why this practice still exists other than to save hospitals money. Back in the era before homes had electricity, people were in sync with nature -- rising and setting of the sun. So, they woke up early, started work early, and went to bed early. People like you, who are totally out of sync, usually develop chronic conditions starting at an earlier age.

Don't feel bad about it, everyone is wired differently. Without motivation I'm awake and alert at 5am (unless I'm awake past 1:30-2am). I would love to sleep in but that's only physically possible for me about once a month when I'm burned out.

@@Ashley-pv3su In medical school, students are bombarded with a fire hose of information. Their days are fairly long between attending classes and studying. Working a long shift in a hospital probably feels mentally relaxing in comparison. One of the most fatiguing activities one can do is simply sit or stand perfectly still. It doesn't take very long to feel exhausted. Being very busy usually produces no fatigue and the time seems to fly by very fast. Most likely the doctors are mentally fine if the long shift is busy but feel mental fatigue if its slow. In the latter case, it's better to sleep or do something to break up the boredom.
