Some of these are really confusing me. For example, at 4:39 you say "eiga wo mimashita" using the kanji character for the verb "to see" but then your English subtitles translate it to "I went to a movie" instead of "I watched a movie." It's a minor difference but as a beginner it kind of confused me. Usually when you say I went to a movie you mean you went to the theaters to watch a movie, while I watched a movie can be either I went to the theater or I watched a movie at home. I know not all translations are literal and that context matters, but even the picture you provide shows a guy watching a movie on a tiny tv at home as opposed to a huge screen at the theater. It really feels to me like the translation for "soshite, yoru, eiga wo mimashita" should be "And I watched a movie in the evening" instead of "went to." Wouldn't "went to a movie" be something like "eiga ni ikimashita" instead? I know it's kind of nitpicking and the meanings are very similar but the translation might give a less experienced person such as myself the idea that the word "mimashita" means "went to" instead of "watched." And this is just an example. There are a few other instances in the video where I noticed the literal translations not matching up with the English subtitles such as when you used the phrase "wakarimashita" and the English subtitles translated as "Ok, thank you" instead of the literal translation of "I understood." EDIT- I don't want to make it sound like I'm grateful. Everything I know about the Japanese language I've learned from your channel and I'm very appreciative for all the hardwork you put in to these free lessons for people. :)

This video is replete with translation errors, John Garcia--for example, 2:26 Japanese = What DID the man order? English = What is the man GOING TO order? These poor translations exist throughout JapanesePod101 videos. This is not the only one.

Many people are surprised that this is for absolute beginners and that they find it too hard. The point here is to get a general idea of what is going on, nobody expects you to understand everything here! The goal is to see if you can kind of grasp what the questions are and what the people in the dialogues might talk about, being able to recognize that one important keyword :D Don't sweat it if you fail in the beginning. Take this video as an exercise to get used to the flow of the language, intonation etc. Don't get discouraged, when I first learned English and French, the first listening comprehensions were always a pain and I could never figure out what they were saying except for a few words. But that's the point, try to concentrate on the words you already know and figure out the rest by context. If it's not going well, take a break, go and learn a little more grammar and vocabs and come back to it later. :)

Listening, reading, writing, and speaking are all different skills that all require individual practice. These skills do reinforce each other, but the bleed is smaller than most people think. My advice to everyone reading this: take stock of which skill you like the most, and focus on it the most! I made the mistake of investing almost all of my time learning reading, then writing, but i wanted most was listening and speaking. I'm finally practicing the last two and i'm really enjoying it even tho im a beginner at it! I just wish i started earlier and focused on it. If youve been spending months "learning japanese" but have been focusing on reading and writing, ofc material like this is gonna be hard! It doesnt mean you barely learned Japanese, it just means youve barely learned *to listen in Japanese*. And now youre getting there. :)

for all the people struggling with this, i recommend just charge up your vocabulary at first before you worry too much. study every day until you know your first 600-1000 words pretty well. once you're there, starting to learn grammar and putting it in context is a lot easier and you can branch out (i recommend cure dolly's videos for grammar). you'll have a firm foundation for putting the grammar you learn to good use since you know some vocab too. even 10 words a day can get you far, but you have to study every day! especially when you are just starting out! in a few months come back to this, and you might surprise yourself if you are diligent in keeping up a daily ritual for studying. then you can look into tadoku/extensive reading and other similar things, and add vocab you hear to your study decks, from songs, anime, conversations, etc etc.

Phil Nolan for a listening comprehension yes. Cant really make it easier or all of them would be about introducing yourself or saying hello/good morning etc 😅 I know all the basics for japanese, but stuff thats in this listening exercise is closer to my level (a little bit simple still) than what you would call a "absolut beginner". So I think there's already a difference in difficulty with listening comprehensions compared to other exercises.

Yep, absolute begginers, i am one, know both hiragana and katakana, 40 kanjis and basic vocabulary and pretty much understood 90% of the questions, so yeah, if this is hard for you, you shoud definetly work on your listening

To me, it is , I’m currently studying Japanese and I understood a lot , but not 100% of course .... most of my answers got right.

That's what I said. I'm learning to speak I learned a lot of basic vocab. But need a step up but not this. Plus I haven't learned any katakana or hiranga yet and Dont know when that will be. This is crazy

If this absolute beginner then I have learned "Absolutely" nothing doing both absolute beginner series ...😖I need my own personal Risa chan!

I wouldn't beat myself up about it... This "absolute beginner" is also "listening comprehension" which is where you're supposed to get past the "hello, my name is..." stuff and actually hold a primitive conversation. There's a BIG BIG difference between hearing a sentence at a time (at most) or reading a couple words and translating them, and then actual listening comprehension in a conversation. :o)

It's very helpful to practice! but since it's for real beginner there are some kanjis we might not knowing, would be helpful to write in full hiragana under the kanji and hiragana writing!

This is fantastic! Thank you. I would love for you to do more videos like this. I am a a beginner and have only been learning for a few months now. Some of the videos I still can't understand very well whilst listening. I understand them when I read the text. If you could produce more videos of this difficulty or even a tiny bit easier/slower speaking, that would be my recommendation. Thank you very much though, fantastic learning!!

I the first time I watched this I understood nothing, I completed half of the genki 1 textbook and I understand already a lot of this... I really recommend it and it is definitely possible for you to learn this. して! Also you can probably find the textbook online. I'm far from really good at Japanese but I'm getting somewhat better... 日本語は難しいでも楽しい.

i don't know if this will help any of you with japanese (even though it's kinda obvious) but what has helped me more than everything else so far was getting able to read fluently, once you get good to that everything else become easier, listening too

For the people complaining this is for intermediate - This is absolute beginners in terms of Listening Comprehension. Of course there are no exercises for people who have just started to learn japanese, since they don't know enough vocabulary. If you want to get a step into listening just listen to the chapter dialogs in the Genki book or whatever book you are using until you have a base set of vocabulary in your brain. Don't tackle these comprehension videos until you have finished Genki I (or similar level, mostly N5). If you cant understand 80% of whats being said here, you are still at the stage where you build a basic foundation for the language and listening exercises are too soon. Don't lose hope though. With steady study you can finish the Genki I in 3 months. With those 600-700 vocabs in the bag, you should be able to understand 80%. I recommend everyone to look into the i+1 method to get improve your language skills, when you have finished Genki I.

everyone's crying because they don't understand but this is so basic, it's beginner level, not "i literally started learning japanese last week" or "i know genki desu ka and toire wa doko desu ka" level
@MusiicRoolz4 жыл бұрын
by the way don't let videos like this intimidate you, it's just learning the vocab and basic sentence structure. you've only just started so of course you don't understand, just take it at your own pace and you'll get there. がんばろうね!

I have been watching anime religiously for 2 years now and it really helped me grasp the idea of what is being talked about. Though I still can't understand the sentences fully.

I have been learning Japanese almost 3 month now and if I don't count watching anime (Jap dub, EN sub) then this was my first time trying listening. I have to say it was way easier than I expected. Understood almost everything expect the parts with words I don't know yet. Saying "I have been learning for a year" or "for 2 months" is very inaccurate since it depends on frequency a learning skills. Well I have been learning every day for 50 minutes with a 5-10 minutes break in the middle on my own. I used Genki textbook, which I think is amazing, and Anki software, which is flashcards software definitely worth checking out. The last thing I have to say is to practive every day at least a little. Just checking out what you are learning for 5 minutes, even if you feel like it's not worth anything and you can't focus at all, does a lot compared to doing nothing. Good luck everyone! :) Provided with some info about how I study in case you are interested.

As I listened to it, I honestly did not pick up every single thing, but I was able to get the gist of what was being asked - so I did pretty well on the questions. like other people also commented, I am sure that the more I listen to this (and other videos like this) I will be able to pick up more and more. Thanks for the video!

I'm so happy after 5 months of learning Japanese, I'm able to understand 90% of this listening quiz! 😍 I got 17 out of 20! How did you guys do? ✨

I took only 11 lessons of Japanese class (28 hours) and I’m shocked that I can understand most of them just by hearing. I did the test and only 3 were wrong. I’m so overwhelmed now and I really thankful for my Japanese sensei, he is really great.
Well considering this is for total beginners, it uses quite advanced grammar (for instance continues form and sentences with -tai), a lot of vocabs already, relatively fast speed and Kanji, katakana and hiragana

About one year ago I couldn't understand this very well, now that I've studied many of these jlpt n5 videos I could understand even the final phrase which I remember not being able to understand it at all lol this is the "Te morau" grammar btw, the phrase literally translates to "Will I receive your help in lifting?", I'm just happy about that :^)

I understood everything and can read most of the kanji!!
I think the video is amazing but... yes there's a but. But there are some translations wrong or not so accurate. For instance はい、さとうクリニックです。It's not "Hello, how can I help you?" It's more like "Hello, here is Satou Clinic" and literally is "Yes, it's Satou Clinic".
