Why do you remove your centre line? Are you new to boating ? Relax, no one will nick your lines. Paranoia of new boaters.

Great video, which I could easily have watched for another half hour. Seeing your mam pulling on that rope reminded me of something my dad told me he saw on the canals years ago as a child (he was born 1933). Back when you'd still see horses pulling the boats, he saw a woman ('tode lass' me dad referred to her as) pulling their boat (husband was steering) with a horse collar around her neck!!. Graft in them days, especially for the women 💪👵

Hi Vince, I just wanted to how absolutely delighted I am with your NC&L channel. I first found you accidently when I got a link to watch part 1 of your journey through London. I then watched part 2 and I was hooked. Went to your KZbin site and started watching your journey right from the first episode. Well, I've finally caught up with you and can I say what a delightful experience it has been for me. What I really liked was that you have started your journey in waters that not many (if any) narrowboaters with a You Tube channel have covered and what a fantastic treat for my eyes to share your admiration for the absolute beauty of the rivers Stort and Lee. Another thing that has drawn me to your journey is that you let the beauty of your surrounding countryside speak for itself - a lot of boater channels that i follow seem to think its necessary to add a musical accompaniment to their journey which is a real no-no for me. Good to see your mum having a little time with you and your daughter helping you through London. looking forward to the continuation of your navigation up the Grand Union Canal and to wherever the waters take you after that - I'll definitely be following along with you. Regards David

Thanks I enjoyed that trip, part of my old stomping ground as a child and later as a hireboater. A couple of things if I may, don't try to stop the boat just hope by the rope. If there is a bollard put one loop of rope around it and use the friction on the rope to take the strain. You get pulled towards the bollard and not into the water. More importantly please ask your Mum not to wrap the morring line around her arm when shes holding the boat for you. If the boat moves for some reason and the rope snags on her arm then she is going swimming.

Hello Vince and Mum, another excellent video. Nice to see parts I haven't been to. Don't worry about the odd bumps they're all part of boating. To the Del Boy of the canal system, if ever you do get a faithful hound you could name it Trig!. I wish some one of the cloggers out there would do one on old and decrepit boats, and the unusual. It would make interesting viewing. There was once one powered by a bicycle type mechanism which you pedalled away with and steered with the handlebars that operated the tiller. It was again a shame she , I think, lost her and her child’s home via the authorities that were!!. Keep well.

Occasionally I've driven past a rural paper mill. I'd described the aroma as similar to rotting cabbage. I think the change to apartments would have been an improvement for the area. Our mill recently closed as could not compete with the price of products ex Asia.

Hi Vince, just wondered if you managed to work out why you met two narrowboats coming towards you without a single working engine between them ? Anyway it's got to be so rare that's something you will never get to see again ! Anyway I have been busy asking all the boaters who post on here so many questions I have probably driven them all mad, the good news is that because of all the kind people on here I have worked out what narrowboat I hope to find, but won't find, being totally realistic when I start looking for one next year or maybe even earlier. I have to admit that I am really looking forward to getting my own boat and getting into that totally laid back way of life that comes with having a narrowboat. Take care Vince, I may even catch up with you soon.

I rather suspect those boats didn't have a licence between them either.

Ah yes. Hemel H. The won with the first of the Magic Roundabouts. Was at the bottom of a steep hill to the south of the high street. Don't know if its still there now? Anyway, glad to see your mum has been able to share some time onboard with you. I appreciate the "warts and all" style too Vince. Keep it up.
@Peter-nv3wu3 жыл бұрын
Yes Brian I THAT roundabout, you have to see it to believe it. I first met it one Saturday night when I was on my way to a party organised by a guy I got to know through a company I was working for at the time. In the early morning on my way home I met it again for the second time and it didn't seem quite as bad then. It was many years ago, but the thing I remember, was that a roundabout that looked to be nothing short of total madness worked surprisingly well once you plucked up enough courage to drive on it.
@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle3 жыл бұрын
They have got one of them in Benfleet Essex, bit of a shock when I first saw it. Yes "warts and all" and be yourself! See you on the next one Brian.

This business is so much work, and constant moving, why on earth do they do it - I can't think of anything I'd rather do than this. Staying on one of these boats for a holiday could be nice without the moving around ! I have done that on a boat on a river in Norfolk which we didn't bother to move. Glad to go home again at the end of my holiday !!! Never again - my body knew there was water under the boat - my aches & pains told me it was damp under there !!! So much kudos to those doing this as a 'hobby', but I am not surprised that some people give it up after a while ! Thanks for the video - and well done Captain !

It's not for everyone Veronica! As like you said, a lot of folks give it up after a while. But each to their own I suppose!

That was a great day nice and busy and shows canal life is not all open fields and wildlife. I've had days when I didn't see another boat and the next you could step from one boat to another and cross the river. Sail Amsterdam!!!!!! The morning start up, I had a routine that I followed and hated it when a guest start helping!! When going to sea I made up a check list clipped to the ships log, this helped with all the extra checks needed. I also simplified jobs so items were to hand IE to top up oil and other fluids. Long paper rounds, I did one for W.H. Smiths all the big houses around Barnet, Arkley rode miles between each one. One of them was Norman Wisdom and another was a BBC news presenter, Name has gone for now. Swapped that for the morning round of Barnet General Hospital, where I sold papers, mags, and cigarettes, I also worked The Star newspaper van delivering the evening papers to shops, Saturdays was the busy day racing from Fleet Street to Finchley, Whetstone and Barnet getting the football results to the shops before the Evening News and Standard so we could sell more papers. Great trip and thanks, loved that your mum Pat had spent time with you, that's what boating is about. PS: I had a grandson on board once and he kept pressing the horn button, I got fed up and pulled a wire out, forgot to reconnect it after he left, I needed in a hurry and of course the thing wouldn't work, luckily no harm done.

Some good tips there! I have purposely not shown my Grandsons where the hooter is. As I know that I would get the same annoying problem that you had! See you next time Vin.

Wow. Do you think those narrowboats/barges were approved by the CRT? No motors or anything? I didn't see any names or numbers. I would have been afraid they would have wiped your boat out.
