Lovely vlog this week. I love the autumn colours. I was born in Kings Langley... so a lovely trip down memory lane. Animal magic, indeed a blast from the past. That programme has shaped my life and I have 'channelled' animals since I was little. It always cheers me up!

The canal from Watford to Hemel is lovely, especially the bit from Kings Langley up to Hemel. Used to be a lot of Kingfishers ( remember one day seeing one dive bomb some poor bloke in a canoe ! ).The smell of coffee from "Smiff's" is wonderful and Apsley Marina is a nice place to wander round. Paper Mill the other side of the canal from the marina is a popular pub though a bit pricy especially for the food. If you moor up a few hundred yards further on, the Oddfellows which is a few minutes wail has live bands over the weekends

I enjoyed my time at Hemel. I remember passing through in the summer and both Hemel and Birko were thriving places along the canal. The coffee smell at 2Fs was more potent in the summer too. Oddfellows, I've noted in my black book for next time. Thanks Chris.

How do you choose such lovely, perfectly suited music? I shall be exploring some of those tracks on Spotify, thanks to your listing the details. You edit the music into the video so well. It’s always so interesting looking at the other boats and the houses along the canals. Half an hour’s escapism travelling along the canals with you; I feel very much relaxed by the end of it. Those photographs were stunning, Chris. Lovely video. Thanks for all the trouble you go to to keep us all entertained.

I'm going to do a piece on that in a future video Martin. It's about making the best use of time by listening to music while answering the comments. Most of it is just background crap, but then....ooh, that's listenable. Then I either like it, which is recorded as a like, or it doesn't make the cut. For me, music is 50% of the content. It needs to relate and tit to whats going on. That is also one of the things that takes the time. Choice. Thanks for your support as always Martin. Photos are getting better. Morning Chris, fabulous vlog, much enjoyed it, I always like to comment but then I read other people's comments and they have already said what I was thinking. Going back to the title of your channel, good idea adding the word narrowboating, it's not about you Chris, it's about the boat haha. Those of us who 'know' you, know it's about you but any newbies search narrowboat, so great idea. Best wishes Christine x
@chrismears-inslowtime2 жыл бұрын
I always thought that way about the comments section so rarely commented on other video from vloggers. 'They've already said it'. It's difficult to find the balance but I wonder how many flit through the comments section first before commenting. I know a few do on this channel. That said, I was talking to a viewer/mate in the week who discussed the very thing you mentioned. The USP. Yes it's about a narrowboaty thing but really, you hit the nail on the head, it's not. The title - It's about marketing and a pull strategy. I don't like sensationalising the thumbnail. I believe it's false but a title change...well thats common sense. Surprised I didn't switch on to it. Thanks Christine.

You comments about security cameras gave me a chuckle or two (ouch). I used to deliver mail to a place that pretended (I thought, badly) to be an art gallery. It had security cameras at either end of the hallway, and I was familiar with that particular model so I knew just where to look for the monitor light. I would step off the elevator, cast a glance down the hall, wave as the monitor light flashed off, and turn to wave at the other one before pressing the intercom at the door. I wasn't impressed at the fact that the curator often wore a lemon yellow vest which was clearly RCMP issue with the flashes removed. They were always irritated at me, because they knew I knew what was going on. The people vignettes are fun to watch. Determined little dog! And of course, there's the aptly named Baldrick 😆
@chrismears-inslowtime2 жыл бұрын
People make the world go round. I do like those who stop to talk or engage with others along the way. Dogs reflect their owners too. I like the dog who knows exactly how to manipulate the owner. It has intelligence and character. The camera thing on the M25. I wonder if they took a photo of me taking a photo of them. I also looked for a reason why there was a need for them in the first place. Access to motorway stations for people doing bad things. It wouldn't be too good to have that bridge blown up. But I wouldn't do it there as there is a towpath and boats and people walking by. Further across is where I would do it. In the open but under cover of night it's hard to be seen in pitch black. When you've defended airfields all you life, it's the same principle regardless of what you're trying to defend. It's a funny old world out there. Hope you're well mate.

Hi Chris, Lookup in your boaters hand book about navigation lights, there is a convention on what lights are shown and the meanings👌
@chrismears-inslowtime2 жыл бұрын
A white light at the from and back, is what my handbook states. I think, it follows convention although at the back, it's an all around light and lot just angled to shine at the stern direction. The one on the front faces the bow door so just lights up the front as a source of light. I considered for canals mainly and not major rivers and in truth, I didn't really consider the navigation lights convention when I made the purchase but common sense was in the decision making. The reason; I just want the boat to be seen when people travel at night. It's very dimly lit but bright enough as a warning. Thanks for the comment.

I'm busy thinking this week as I'm more relaxed. I'll even do next week's video early so I have more time to relax and think. I never just sit - well rarely. Air-fryer stays in the shop window as did the microwave. I use the microwave cupboard for all sorts of galley storage now. That's not going to change. The microwave is not coming aboard. Of course, if you're up for it at any time, you're both more than welcome.

Not an awful lot on the canals of the sort you would call vandalism. However, people deliberately draining the canal between two locks (A Pound), so to cause boaters to become grounded when they live on the canal but don't like the boating community. Why buy that property? It's almost criminal damage and wastes water as it floods the area below the pound and to refill that drained pound means the water above is now lower. Old school ways to address the problem is required! I wonder if the Spurs will be Hot this season? Cheers Graeme.

Morning Chris, that’s a really nice of the canal you showed in the video albeit there is a very tight spot after the M25 with a wooden bridge, concrete bridge and then the lock all at once which I paddled and thought hmm a bit tight for a long boat. Some very nice houses with gardens onto the canal too. Perhaps I’m the only subscriber that doesn’t know how the locks actually work with the windy handles and the whole process….perhaps a bit of content for a future video? Nice vlog Chris. You're getting quite good at picking some nice music clips, which enhance the vlog. On the subject of lights on the tiller. Do you think it could be an aid for getting on or off the boat in the dark? I would turn on my port and starboard lights if I was worried about being hit, but isn't that also why the transom is usually painted white, so oncoming boats can see them. Safe journeys.
@chrismears-inslowtime2 жыл бұрын
Ref the light at the back of the boat, Yes. Not sure why the colour scheme doesn't have one and I not most newer boats don't either. Doesn't match the colour is the reason. When a culture lacks tradition...a new culture starts. I said it when I was in the mob, when decision were made, we don't look back far enough in history before a decision is made. Often there is a reason why culture presents itself in the way it did. I'm beginning to understand the 'why' a bit better now my experience is growing. The light - yes. The principle reason, was for others to spot the boat. I went on a night walk and the light in the far distance - a boat, made me understand the importance of it and also a boat turning to avoid my boat, in what I considered last minute, as at the time I didn't have one was another: It can be seen from the front too. Thanks Steve.

Great vlog this one. The narrowboat life is cruising, and what I think people want to see predominately, when looking for canal content along with the nitty gritty stuff. Search utube for SEO ideas, you could cast the searchword net further with the tinyhouse, vanlife crowd maybe. Good luck!
@chrismears-inslowtime2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I'm sure you're right about the SEO. It is, well at least for me, difficult to get the right mix of content. So much about narrowboat life, is not the cruising, unless you literally cruise every other day or so. But then, after a while, it looks the same. Getting the right shots and what I consider the Rembrandt moments are the things I looks for. The rest, well editors chose I suppose. I believe content is key. It'll happen in time. I'm enjoying the walks to recce where next as it teaches me so much about canal life that I wouldn't understand without doing it. It makes the cruising more enjoyable as I know what to expect around the corner. Thanks for the comment and support.
