I actually saw the infamous final episode of Hit Man in 1983, knowing that it was going to be replaced by Dream House the following week. Laughed for a good five minutes after seeing it!

Another game show testing contestants' recall power and was on about the same time as "Hit Man" was "Contraption" on The Disney Channel. On that show, kids were shown footage from a Disney feature film, and are asked to remember things about said footage.

The documentaries on this show were narrated by Peter Tomarken. Randy West several months after the last episode appeared on "Press Your Luck" and was the first contestant to hit and win a car on the show.

Thank you for posting another cool video. “Hit Man” would probably be totally forgotten, even by all of us game show fans, had it not been the first pairing of host Peter Tomarken and announcer Rod Roddy. In fact, if it had been a hit and lasted longer than 13 weeks they might never have been available to work together on “Press Your Luck” later in 1983. Crazy how things work out, huh? Thanks again.

Hit Man was basically the concept of the high school pop quiz as in the teacher who would give a narrative and then ask questions about it, and combined it with a Space Invaders theme (especially in the second round).

I guess NBC had other game shows that were just as short-lived as _Hit Man_ to the point that they would be a perfect fit for this series, namely _Your Number's Up,_ _Hot Potato,_ _Caesar's Challenge,_ etc.
@andrewbarton25902 жыл бұрын
Caesar was up against the soaps Y&R and Loving if it was cleared by NBC affiliates at noon. Most of the time though, NBC affiliates would not air the network noon shows, preferring local newscasts.

If you’re going to cover “Hot Potato” in the future, you should mention what I call the “Boot Hill Bungle”, where a trio of Coast Guardsmen were one question away from winning $15,000. They were asked where Boot Hill was, and they were given a choice of either Dodge City, Kansas, or Tombstone, Arizona. They answered Tombstone and were somehow called wrong, but I reckoned that the show screwed up. I looked in a road atlas after the show, and I found out that, yes, there was a Boot Hill in Dodge City, but there was also a Boot Hill in Tombstone, so the show did indeed screw up. I later called Barry and Enright Productions from a pay phone and mentioned the incident to them, and I was told that host Bill Cullen would offer an on-air apology in the future. Well, NBC never aired that apology (I received a videocassette of it from someone years later, and it eventually did air in reruns).

In my opinion, Hit Man was for the ‘80’s what The Big Showdown was for the ‘70’s. Both were undiscovered gems and pretty good shows.

Hit Man was another Jay Wolpert concoction that didn't quite work out, but deserves points for being more unique in its format and presentation compared to other game shows. As for future episodes of 26WoL, The Chair would be a good one to talk about, as I kinda enjoyed it back when it first aired. At least compared to Fox's The Chamber, the heart-raising events were designed with the contestants' safety in mind.

Believe it or not, three of the shows you listed have already been covered on this channel (four if you count Magnificent Marble Machine making the Top 5 Worst Game Shows Of ‘75 list). Trashed and Mindreaders were Game Show Garbage inductions, and Quicksilver was covered in this very series, 26 Weeks Or Less.

Good video! This almost sounded like a Game Show Garbage induction, but at least Peter Tomarken's hosting saved it from being so. BTW, when are you going to finish the Games of ' 90?

@@GameShowGumbo Out of the pre-2004 shows (outside of Lingo), I loved Wintuition with Marc Summers and Russian Roulette with Mark L. Walhburg. I think Wintuition would do better today than pre-2004. Poor ignorant past me thinking I didn't need to go on that show.

This is how I would retool Hit Man: First Round - Simple "common knowledge" quizzer, that's a race to 5 points, with each question worth 1 point. The player that does it, gets $500; 2nd place gets $250. Both players' points rolls over to the next round. Second Round - Same as the first, except the champion gets to choose between 3 categories; the questions are based on that category. This round is a race to 15 points. The first two players start with the points they earned in the first round; the champion starts with an amount of points equal to the sum of the other two players. Each correct answer is worth 2 points. The winner gets $500. However, if the champion wins, they get $1,000! Bonus Round - Contestant starts with 0 points. They must earn 20 points in 60 seconds. They're 8 categories, one question each. One category is worth 5 points, one is worth 4 points, five are worth 3 points & one category is worth 20 points (INSTA WIN!). They don't know the point value of the categories; they find out, when they guess correctly. However, the audience is shown the values regardless.

When this debuted I was just 16, in 10th grade, and happened to be home sick due to a severe throat infection and fever. I watched all three of these new NBC shows and felt "meh" about all 3 of them. I agree, the championship round to determine who goes to the bonus board should have had some kind of payout! Over time I've come to appreciate the comprehension aspect of this show, and think it could work very well with school kids. Was a rather clever concept for its time to be sure. Peter and Rod were both their sensational selves! Also, trivia on that same date, Monday, January 3rd 1983, Plinko was played for the very first time on Price is Right.

I’ve never seen “Hitman” since I watched it on KZbin. This lasted about 13 weeks and it should’ve been a hit, and I want to re-create “Hitman”, all I need is add MLP characters as contestants and Applejack will be the emcee, and it will be a success. Weird Paul made a video about it when he got his first blank VHS tape and record segments of “Hitman” and other random stuff from 1983, and here it is. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6ulpXRpnpWbntk
