When appearing with する or 来る, it is also common to see まい connected to the conjunctive form as しまい, すまい, きまい and こまい. However, the standard するまい and 来るまい are also quite common structures.
Exception: する →　すまい
Exception: くる →　こまい
1. しないつもりだ，してはいけない
will not; will probably not; intend not to; must not
It is used when you express your strong will not to do something or tell yourself you are determined not to do something. The subject is the speaker.
まいrapidly ceased to be used in colloquial language after the Meiji and Taisho periods, and is hardly used colloquially today. Although it is sometimes used as a written word, it is being replaced by other expressions that have the same meaning as まい, and its usage is decreasing.
節約のためしばらく外食すまい。
→節約のためしばらく外食しないつもりだ。
I won't be eating out for a while to save money.
難しいとは思うけど、歌手になるという夢は諦めまい。
→難しいとは思うけど、歌手になるという夢は諦めてはいけない。
I know it will be difficult, but I won't give up on my dream of becoming a singer.
When the subject is someone other than the speaker, there are no sentences that end with まいin the sense of negation of intention.
彼女は明日からお菓子を食べまい。
⇒彼女は明日からお菓子を食べないだろう。
She will probably not eat sweets starting tomorrow.
It doesn't mean that she's not going to eat sweets starting tomorrow.
2. Regarding the use of negative intention, まいis used relatively even in modern times, where it is used to express what is in your heart.
同じ過ちは繰り返しまいと自分に誓った。
I swore to myself that I would not repeat the same mistake again.
もうお酒は飲むまいと思ったんだけどつい飲んでしまった。
I thought I would never drink alcohol, but against my better judgement I ended up drinking.
迷惑をかけまいと思い、気分が悪いことを隠そうとした。
I tried to hide the fact that I wasn't feeling well so as not to cause any trouble.
3. ないだろう/ないでしょう
probably not/ might not / I assume. / I am sure, I bet is not
It is used when you express your assumption of what other people wouldn’t do/something wouldn’t happen. In modern times, negative intention is more commonly used in the form ないorません, and negative inference is more often used in the form ないだろう/ないでしょう.
彼はとても正直者だから、嘘はつくまい。
Because he is very honest, he would probably not tell lies.
私はUFOを見たことがあるが、きっと誰も信じまい。
I have seen a UFO, but I assume surely no one would believe me.
田中さんはとても穏やかな人だからそんなことでは腹を立てまい。
Tanaka-san is a very calm person, so he would probably not get angry over such things.
