Winter Camping in Sub-Zero temperatures (-26C) can be dangerous but if done properly you can enjoy yourself just the same. On this solo camping adventure I hiked back into the forest to the bushcraft camp. I had to cut a lot of firewood to get through the cold night ahead. Before dark I cook up a beef stew over the campfire and enjoy a cold beer before going to bed. In the morning I found my water, bacon and eggs were all frozen because of the extremely cold temperatures. I managed to save the bacon and melt the water for coffee. It was a long cold windy night but I made it through and hiked back out after a campfire breakfast.

Hey folks. Hope everyone is having a great holidays and staying safe out there. One thing I forget to film was the temps. WIth the plastic down and fire going I had the inside of the shelter up to +15C when the outside temp was -20C. Pretty good temp difference I'd say. Once the fire went out though it was just as cold as outside! Cheers,

You can cook eggs that have been frozen. The only reason farmers throw them out is because the shell cracks and bacteria from the hens' bottoms could get in and contaminate the egg. In your situation, there's no exposure to contaminates and the time from crack to pan is short, so they are safe to eat. 💖🌞🌵😷

Just a suggestion for all, always always carry plastic, by using it over boughs as well as front towards fire will contain more heat and prevent wind and rain from dripping down. Also Russian all night fire helps . For those who criticize plastic as not purist, remember all the things your carrying that you've bought including expensive packs. Just a thought, really appreciate your videos, nice to watch to relax in these times of negative news. God bless, stay warm, keep sharing with us. Thank you.

Give this a shot next time: before bed, boil a litre of water and put it in a Nalgene bottle (not stainless steel), and then stick that thing in the bottom of your sleeping bag. Hey buddy if your going to do some more winter camping, You need to make a self feeding camp fire. They will feed them self all night long! and you can sleep like a baby lol lol ..... And for a nice cover for the front of your camp, There is this Black cloth that is used on gardens to keep weeds from growing. What it has is one way microscopic holes in it air can go only one way through it So the heat from the fire can go in and wont come out...
@JoshuaGammon

Hey Richard. I can't do a self feeding campfire in the shelter. Just isn't big enough. I might do that later on this winter though on a difference camping trip. I never thought of the garden black cloth. Great idea! Maybe I'll replace the plastic and see if that makes a difference. Merry Christmas.

Hi Josh Merry Christmas . Under lessons learned we saw that you needed more bigger logs that were longer as well. That way the burning would last longer & provide a more spread out heat. I love winter camping but only if I can stay comfortable at night. Live & learn. Stay Safe & God bless . Thanks for the video Brian 80
@JoshuaGammon
@JoshuaGammon 3 жыл бұрын
Your 100% right Brian. For a cold night like this I should really have a long fire. This shelter is a little to small for that right now. When I started I just sorta keep building and then bang. Didn't plan for it. I'll keep that in mind next time for sure. Cheers and Merry Christmas 🎄🎄

A Hot water bottle is a good thing to have... enough to keep you warm at night.. on a cold morning you'd have enough luke warm water to boil for your coffee or to wash your face. also keep a wool sock.. and keep a bottle of mashed eggs in the bottle.. that goes inside the sock..that way you can keep it inside your shelter..and it won't be solid stiff in the morning.

I've spent times hunting in a fold up plywood shack with a tarp for a roof. I can relate. Try storing your water spout down, the opening will be the last to freeze. I see something I would certainly beef up, such as the thin poly, they disintegrate in cold windy....seen it, done it... I would go the heaviest mil possible. You need a large knarly stump to last all night and still have coals, small material fizzles out in under two hours. I'm talking 20" diameter x 4 foot length Sleeping comfy is not the problem, its getting up for a leak, crapping outside in the morning really sucks.
