When i was a young man, I saw an ad for the Sea Sprite in Sail or Cruising World zines. I cut out the photo of the boat and taped it on the dashboard of my old beatup Toyota pickup and pretended every time I hit a pothole that I was steering the Sea Sprite obliquely off the 12/15 ft swells we get out here. At the time I was living out in the Pacific Islands (born and raised) and these zines were old leftovers from cruisers who stopped off on this route. You can imagine the crazy dreams I had sailing that boat bumping along on the Hi-lux. Years passed and eventually I boat-ratted my way aboard several sloop rigged classic plastics on cruises to Japan, Philippines, the Marianas. I still can't afford a Sea Sprite, but my original gut feeling back then that this was a go anywhere boat (except MAYBE the southern ocean) still holds water (haha) I'm 71 now and finally taught myself to work a sight on a sextant, which actually turned out to be very easy after teaching myself a few calculus and trig concepts and studying the unit circle because I'm still waiting for lady luck to come my way in the form of another cruise or small boat I can handle. Never say die, haha.

Hope springs eternal Joaquin. I like your story and your enthusiasm but as I read it I was hoping you were going to tell me that the old pick up truck you drove have been replaced by a new Mercedes and you’ll become president of your company and we’re highly successful and just wanted a simple boat to sail Of course I am ever the romantic and I’m delighted that you have picked up the sextant I’ve been working on that for years and I have a mental block against some of the math but there is a great book on the subject it’s very smart very short. It’s not Mary Bluiett and I can’t think of the name right now but I will check it out tomorrow. I got the name and the title from James Baldwin who is circumnavigated twice in a trade and 28 foot boat check out his website atomvoyages.com I hope you find something soon good luck and Fairwinds CQ

Sistership Sea Sprite 34 flying a CCA burgee won the Marion Bermuda Race overall a few years back. Great boat! I think this is mostly an update of the Luders 33, with a new deck and interior and a fractional rig. And what a nice boat! I have always loved these, having done some cruising on an Allied Luders 33. I like the Sea Sprite better. To quote Ricardo Montalban "I like what they've done to my boat!" If I was ever to "move up" from my Alberg 30, this would be the boat. Interestingly, Ryder got the name "Sea Sprite" when he bought the molds and rights to the Carl Alberg Sea Sprite - which became a series (27/28, 30 and 34), with all the others designed by Bill Luders. Both Alberg and Luders drew wonderful sailing (and looking!) boats!

There is a Sea Sprite 34 for sale in Annapolis ($50K) for comparison. You commented that it had a lot of room for an older 34 foot boat. What more modern boat should I compare it to to see what design improvements have evolved?
@YachtHunters2 жыл бұрын
Just go look at the new modern both of them come out the last 10 or 15 years. And you will feel like you’re living in a cave in Scandinavia. It will be huge but colorless. We try to review and visit these older boats that have plenty of room and comfort and style which is important. The difference in actual both speed is no difference at all. Think I’ll school and you’ll have a great time and you’ll be proud of the boat you buy when you pull into that Marina sometime. Thank you for your note happy new year

A Catalina 30 would probably be the best bang for your buck and a good size for someone starting out. They aren’t fancy, nor are they amazing quality, but they’re good, roomy boats for the size that are great for beginners. Not quite a “blue water” vessel but a novice shouldn’t be going straight into blue water anyways. cheers.
@brianream64602 жыл бұрын
At that budget, you need to go much smaller. 27, 28 feet. Everything is cheaper (sails, rigging, engine, hardware, docking, maintenance storage..)and mistakes aren't as expensive. As a novice, you'll have a harder time knowing where to save money on used items so simple is key. Forget Bluewater for now. Think coastal, ICW, Carribbean. Monitor owners groups online. Sea sprite made a 27 if you can find one. Drive around marinas and look for for sale signs on boats, especially ones in the back of the yard as they probably weren't launched last year and will be bargains. Find a surveyor!
@MH-ql8ue2 жыл бұрын
@@varietybacon6969 thank you. I have viewed a couple of those and like the layout and everything. You are correct also about the blue water. I would need experience first. Mama didn't raise no fools, lol...I am a quick study but realistic about my own abilities and would not jeopardize myself or others needlessly. I am mainly interested in Caribbean and coastal adventures, more so than ocean passage. And if I feel my skills aren't there then I would find a crew mate with the experience and willingness to explore with me, and to learn from.
