I had identical twin girls in 1977 when I was 19 years old. They were undiagnosed and we found out on the deliver table when the doctor shouted there's another one. I went into labor at around 28 weeks and at the hospital they told me I had my dates all wrong and that everything was fine. So, I had the first baby extremely quickly, as she was only 3 lbs, and the second one was lying across with her arm presenting. So they put me to sleep, pushed her back and delivered her feet first. There was only one placenta and they assumed they were identical and they look identical, but last year we had the DNA test and they are indeed identical twins. There is so much information on twins today that I am glad I didn't even know I was having twins. I would have worried myself into oblivion if I were having twins today.

Congrats 🎉🎉🎉 By now you have 2 beautiful girls. I’m a 38 year old woman with an identical twin sister. Our bond and love for one another is unbreakable and unexplainable. But we are also very different in personality and I guess that is my point. People compared us from the moment we entered this world. We twins are so use to it that it is second nature. But if there’s any advise I’d like to share is. Let them be individuals. We tend to get wrapped up in the idea of 2 beautiful identical babies that we treat them as one. But they’re 2 people. I call it the “silent twin struggle”. You love your twin so you don’t mind the comparison (at least I don’t) but it can be confusing when growing up. Do you like red or is that your twins favorite color? Do you prefer a baby doll over a barbie or is that your twin? Don’t force them to wear identical clothes. It’s ok to dress them alike but listen when they voice out there choices. And lastly. It’s Team Twin all the way not Team Mom or Dad. Don’t try to find out who did it lol. They don’t betray each other, they will tell on each other to throw the dogs off the trail.

Sorry to hear that, but you will see your twin again someday. I know for my case I feel like I have 2 sides of my personality and I absorbed my twin in the womb. But idk if that baby went to heaven or not, but RIP my unborn twin. So I always feel like I have multiple sides of my personality cause I prob absorbed some of my twins DNA and I have 2 sides. I'm an identical twin. 75 years old now. When my Mom gave birth she was a super Mom. I, first ,was born breech and my twin three minutes later came out on the run being born feet first. My Mom told the doctor she was having twins and he didn't believe her. To his surprise, after I was born Mom said here comes the other one. He looked and sure enough he said there is another one isn't there. So much for modern technology. Identical twins girls seem to run in our family. I have no knowledge of how he knew we were identical. It must have been quite obvious.

I am the grandmother of identical twin girls who are now almost 8 years old. They had TTTS at 16 weeks and luckily we live in a city with one of the most famous medical centers in the world. They did laser surgery on the placentas. At about 31 weeks, it looked like one twin was getting bigger than the other. The twin that was bigger was the smaller twin when they had TTTS. They were born by C-section within the same minute. When they were born, one was noticeably smaller than the other. When they were little older, I could tell them apart because Emma had a little birth mark on one of her toes. When they got older still, I couldn’t tell them apart at all. Now Gwen is a little taller so I can tell them apart-if they are standing next to each other. Emma is left handed and to the best of my knowledge, the only lefty in our extended family. Mom has ALWAYS been able to tell them apart. The other grandmother has also always been able to tell them apart. They spent much more time with her when they were infants because I am much older than she is and not physically able to take care of them adequately for an extended period of time. She is also an RN. If I can watch them for a while, I can tell them apart because Emma is much more deliberate about things than Gwen. For instance, she started coloring within the lines sooner.

Its not about being fooled, without dna, theres no way to differentiate between di di identical and fraternal twins, except if gender is different. (Before birth)

The subject of twins have always been very fascinating to me You have shared very interesting facts. When my hcg rate was too high, my gyno scared me that I may have either molar pregnancy or twin pregnancy. I was ready for neither. But I thought having twins is far better than a molar pregnancy. @@USJapanFam during scanning the radiologist told me that hcg level varies a lot anywhere between 5000-60000 and its normal to have a higher range and he wondered why doctor scared me. I underwent 2 scans in a span of 2 weeks to rule out the molar pregnancy. Those 2 weeks were toughest part in my life.

Great video! My twins are 9 years old, boy and girl. I was 36 when they were born, and 35 when they were conceived. I had 2 other sons (not twins) before them. I wasn’t aware that 37 weeks was considered full term for twins! Mine were born at 37 and a half weeks. And you’re right about the vaginal birth. Both my 2nd child and my twin son both born by C-section, both had excess fluid in their lungs and struggled to breathe at birth and spent several hours in the NICU. But both were healthy and no problems afterward. Also, my daughter is left-handed, and they did have their own little language until preschool, which was so cute but I always wondered what they were saying about me-lol! My son also has a similar birthmark on his back, which he’s starting to be somewhat self-conscious about, so letting him know that he wasn’t alone in that was really helped him. It’s really been amazing and rewarding for me to watch my twins grow from 10 weeks in my first ultrasound to now 9 years old and continue to grow. They have very distinct personalities not just because they are different sexes, but they are still independent individuals, although still much closer than other siblings. I wanted to comment on your video, not only because I enjoyed it and it was very informative but also to confirm several of your facts to expectant twin moms. And because having them from the pregnancy to watching them grow is truly a unique experience.

My two nieces were not twins, but they used to communicate with each other in another language . Baby language you could call it, I guess, or maybe the one sensed the fact that her little sister was not gonna be around, I don't know, but one night, the last night they spent together, they were talking all night long til the morning hours. Talking like 2 grown ups and never interrupted one another. I hear cases where not even the mother understands their child talk, but a sibling does translating everything to the mother.

in your case you likely have the hypo-ovulation gene (which makes fraternal twins run in the family because it makes the women drop multiple eggs at ovulation) so yes, I'd say almost entirely due to genetics. For identical twins, and others like me with no twins in the family, the luck to genetics ratio is probably flipped ;)

I have a twin brother. We were born at 34 weeks, and I had to spend almost a month in the NICU and he was sent home with our mom when she was discharged. I was 4lbs and lost weight quickly and was hooked up to a feeding tube. My brother was 4lbs 8oz and was gaining weight pretty easily. Fraternal twins run on my mom's dad's (my Pap) side of the family, and skips a generation. My mom's aunts (my great aunts- my Pap's sisters) are fraternal twins. It's funny how out of my mom and her other 3 siblings, she was the only one who had twins 😂. My brother and I look nothing like each other lol. I look more like our dad and I have his blood type. My twin brother looks more like our mom, and he has her blood type. When we were babies, we looked a lot alike though.

I would have to question your information on identical twins.I was told by my OBGYN that identical twins are a maternal genetic factor. My mother was an identical mirror twin. She occasionally participated in research studies that also gave that same information, and that identical twins tend to run every other generation. So the identical twins granddaughters are susceptible to having twins. This is all natural and not including fertility health care.

oh wow!!!! that's incredibly unusual!! all of the "risk" factors you mentioned are for fraternal twins aka dropping multiple eggs. for identical, i think IVF and fertility drugs are the only things that increase your chances, and just pure "luck" LOL!

I was not surprised by any of it. That may be because my identical twin and I married another set of identical twins. We are the only set of identical twins married to other identical twins who: 1) Did NOT have a double wedding. We married exactly one year apart. 2) Did NOT live next door, or even in the same house, as is more common than you’d think for “Quartenary Marriages” a term I was surprised was not in the post above. We raised our children in different towns, so that our children were in different school districts. But we each had our first two children within days of each other. We were due 3 days apart the first time, and found out the same day! Our parents flipped out. My twin and double brother-in-law had a third child. She had two sons then a daughter; I had two daughters. 3)To the best of my knowledge, we are the only twins married to twins who are all doctors. Three of us are dentists, and one is a plastic surgeon. 4) We were the subject of a segment of the David Susskind TV show, and were very unhappy with the brief notariety the ensued. No more TV! We also were in a a couple of books on twins and some magazine articles including People, though we never sought out any publicity. 5) Our children were raised as brothers and sisters with separate households and parents. But we did not discipline each other’s kids. Now our children are all grown and married with 8 children of their own. We all consider our joint grandchildren each others first cousins (genetically.)

❤ my identical sister twin and i are the first ones in our family. Not in anything i can find in my entire family, have had twins. Its interesting. We did share absolutely everything in one placenta and were in the same sack. We were going through TTS, where i was giving my sister a blood transfusion, i was giving her everything, my mom had to have an emergency c-section and i came out pure white and she came out pure red. I was a bit smaller than her and had to be in an incubator. I cannot imagine not being a twin... i just don't know how it would be lol we are extremely close. And both gay. Lol

When one twin dies in the womb (this is often so early mom doesn't even know she's pregnant yet), sometimes the surviving embryo/fetus absorbs it and apparently even more rare they can take on their genetic makeup as well, leading to chimerism. I think it's incredibly rare but fascinating!!!

@@USJapanFam My mom has wondered if I'm a case of twin chimerism. She says my feet have always been puffy since birth and she did have an increased chance of twin pregnancy when she had me than when she had my brother(we are almost 20 years apart in age), so she might have very well had a twin pregnancy where vanishing twin syndrome happened. I would imagine that at my age, being a full grown adult and all, a twin chimerism test would be both super expensive and hard to do. I have heard that there is often a degree of blood type chimerism in multiples, especially higher order multiples like triplets. And that somehow, this blood chimerism in multiples does not lead to HDN(Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn). It's really fascinating both how much we know and how much we don't know about twins and higher order multiples.

I don’t have a link at the ready but you could probably find relatively reliable sources with a quick google. It’s in every twin pregnancy book that they consider them full term and want them out at 38 weeks… not sure if that’s because they’re ready quicker or simply because risks of leaving them in longer outweigh the potential benefits at that point 😬 I had one doctor begging to take mine out at 38, other doc was like, they’re fine, we are monitoring every 3 days, let them cook!

I was an identical twin. She’s passed on but we had the most fun growing up. Fooling friends, teachers, boyfriends…… we had our own language too. Only my mother and brother could tell us apart. My daddy never could, aunts uncles cousins, never could either. I always wanted twins. I’ve always heard a rumor that most left-handed people have a vanishing twin I don’t know if that’s true or not but that was the theory at one point. BOTH my children, my daughter and son are left handed from two right handed parents. That’s rare because only 10% of the population if left handed. I’d like to think they could have been identical twins. I also read where a boy and girl CAN be identical to begin with and one changes sex in the womb.

Indeed! Multiples are ALWAYS quite rare, but undergoing any sort of fertility treatment will increase the chance of multiples via either multiple eggs dropping (fraternal twins) or eggs splitting (identical twins). I'm not talking about the chance of getting pregnant, but if/when pregnancy does result, while multiples are always rare, a fertility treatment augmented pregnancy is more likely to be multiples than a non-assisted pregnancy. Not just when multiple eggs are used but also due to certain drugs taken/given.
