Very helpful! I'm not ready/in a position to buy my own horse right now, but I'm addicted to looking at ads 😂 I have a video suggestion- as someone commented below, the word "novice" is fairly broad, and it's difficult to distinguish between beginners, novices, amateurs, advanced riders etc. Maybe you could do a video on the topic of how you'd assess your own level of riding and experience? I know that everyone's got their own interpretations but I'd be interested in what you think! x

A great point. The word novice is a real challenge and seems to vary from rider to rider and seller to seller. I'll have a think and see if I can come up with something x

When I was sold a pony that then proceeded to bolt with me and throw me off, friends recommended I sold it as a good all-rounder as this doesn't show it to excel at any one thing, needless to say it went for some retraining and was sold by that trainer to a suitable home, but no - an all-rounder isn't always a good thing!! 🤔 Forgot to say, brilliant video with great explanations!!

novice/beginner has different meanings to EVERY one. I probably would put beginner as someone more skilled then most because I assume a beginner beginner wouldn't be buying a horse and I certainly wouldn't sell one to them.
@NoThankUBeQuiet3 жыл бұрын
A non beginner to me should be able to wtc anywhere. Handle a small buck and ride at least a single jump of about 2ft. Before that I really don't think you should consider buying, unless it's a child in a horsey family

If a pony (not horse) is sold as a mother daughter share, I would also take this as the pony may be a bit cheeky and needs a stronger rider every so often to remind the pony of how it should go. Although some people may mean it can take anyone but taking precautions I would always think the first!
@RidingWithRhi3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is a very good point that makes sense - I believe Woody had a young teenage owner before me but they struggled with him in the jumping, so this would make sense as a reason. MDS was on his ad too!

I know this was posted months ago! But what does it mean when someone says prefers to travel in a lorry? Obviously they prefer a lorry to trailer but does it mean they just wont go in a trailer full stop or not?
@RidingWithRhi2 жыл бұрын
Those are the best questions to ask the seller when you see something like this. They generally won't bother putting it on an ad unless there is some kind of issue with loading, but the extent of that is what you'll need to ask them.

Sold as a project could mean that the current owner is terrified of the horse and wants someone to buy that horse and take it away. Being sold from the paddock can mean something similar. Current owner has had a fright and just left the horse in the paddock and proceeded to do nothing with it. Be sceptical about statements about what level the horse is schooling at, especially if this is a much higher level than the horse is competing at. If you go to see a horse like this, make sure that the horse really can do it. Stable vices should probably be avoided if you are planning to resell.

What do people mean when they say it's my last year on ponies. Or when they say I registered my pony for like a horse class or something like is there a division or a part that you can register a pony that you would normally ride horse in?
@RidingWithRhi3 жыл бұрын
When people say "last year on ponies" that's essentially what they mean - they are nearly outgrowing ponies and will need to ride horses soon, which can be a challenging transition as they ride so differently. It's also why you see ads that say "great first horse for someone coming off ponies". I'm not sure of the ins and outs of ponies vs. Horse divisions in each discipline but there are some where you can't move higher at a certain stage unless you are on a horse

@@RidingWithRhi Ohhh okay thanks so much also about the horse part I just heard someone say something about them and their pony competing in a group of all other horses I don't know if that makes sense sorry but thank you for responding! 😅

My interpretation of low mileage is that the horse hasn't seen/been to many things and maybe they're a little bit green at shows for example. I was interested to hear your interpretation was a bit different, but it just highlights the minefield of buying a horse 😂
@RidingWithRhi3 жыл бұрын
This is actually a very good point. I don't know that I'd interpret it as green, but the idea of needing a bigger rider to keep them in check definitely makes sense to me. I know Woody had smaller teenagers on him before and I believe they struggled a little in the jumping with him.
