I think it’s just that this current T20 world cup format emphasises the need to peak at the right time deluxe. It gives you very little room for error in certain situations. Australia’s fielding has been poor, and we’ve been prone to having the top and middle order being skittled by subcontinent teams, but it was possible to iron them out in the longer round robin format of last year’s ODI WC. Plus missing fielders like Smith, Green and Marnus didn’t help.

I don’t care much for T20 as a format (and for domestic T20, not at all). I haven’t seen a ball of this tournament but listened to Aus vs Scotland on ABC radio and checked out a lot of podcasts to keep up with the general progress of the teams. Nobody else I know who I can usually talk cricket with knows or cares that this event is on. T20 World Cups are always a lottery (although a bit less so if you’re India, who are so desperate to win that we might as well let them have something). My dominant feeling at Australia crashing out is to wonder if there will be any change to the coaching methods and how many veterans will be moved on. Unfortunately the next generation of white ball players for Australia will have no name recognition as they will only play for their country behind a paywall. It’s all very bleak for a traditional cricket fan in Australia, and us not winning this tournament is at the very bottom of the list of things that concern me.

In the ODI world cup last year India lost just one game (The Final) and Australia lost two. But Australia were the winners of the whole thing because they played good cricket on the day it mattered. The problem was the complete disrespect shown towards Afghanistan and their strengths from a selection point of view. You break through their openers and the game is in your hands, so where the fuck was Starc? The continued selection of Wade over Inglis is a failure too. I get it, it was Wade's last hurrah. Who cares? With complete respect to Tim David, who does his job well, he isn't suited to spin conditions. He should never have played against teams expected to bring heavy spin against us if the pitch was tricky. He has a spot in the 15, but you slot him in on better wickets. It just goes to show that t20 is harder than people give it credit for, and the big dogs up stairs in Cricket Australia have not taken it seriously enough.
