Great advice. I am struggling with this now. Thanks again.

Awesome vid. Thanks for the wisdom. I'm still a very low time pilot and the air cushion effect still sneaks up on me some days. Great explanation.

I hadn't really experienced it until the last few days... Did my PPL in a R22 with a DA of 5000' to 6800' the highest I saw and could barely even hover under the 5-min takeoff power. Just started in the R44 the other day for instrument with good DA (still ~3500) and really felt that cushion for the first time. A bit weird, since the first set down in it ended up being on a slope... I love just how much power (comparatively) is in the 44... can't wait to get to fly the big boys.

You guys are the Best. The FAA should make your video completion of watching your series AND feeding back their comprehension by testing on paper AND practical MANDATORY, before licensing a Rotorwing Certificate. The physics of helicopter flight are as complex as nuclear physics. If one breaks those laws, they and all on board are injured or DIE. In short: Those without superior instantaneously mind processing experience will just die and all those on board. Good for the "REPLACEMENT" industry, bad for the dependent survivors of a poorly informed, AND INTUITIVELY UNGIFTED AND UNCOMPREHEDNDING AND UNDISCIPLINED PiC.

I’ve heard you mention this, before, and I still struggle, some. I hope this video helps. My best set downs have been when I gently squeeze through it like pulling a trigger, because otherwise, I tend to wobble on the air cushion or drop the collective too fast and apologize to my instructor for the rough set down.

Ground effect ✅

@@hansashbaugh4014 if it was ground effect Kenny would have mentioned that. While ground effect is certainly occurring this appears to be something else.

David Wallace , it’s ground effect....same as “air cushion.”......same as fixed wing .

What works for me and it was taught to me by a very experienced CFI is focal my vision on a object about 40 - 50 metres away, maintain low stable hover and just relax my grip on the collective. Works for me every time.

I used to struggle with this. Until...I flew with a friend who is not my instructor, but is an instructor. He told me to relax, the ship wants to go down so just let it and control the cyclic and yaw. It'll go down, so let it. When it touches apply the corrections just like on a two step pick up, but in reverse.

I never had this problem, I would transition to my point of landing keep lowering the collective until the skids touched and yes some of my landings were hard but not to bad. I think what helps is doing lots of hovering autos I never see these being practiced on utube.

Over controlling the cyclic adds to the problem of those last few inches. If they over control the cyclic while at a three foot hover and lower the collective they relax the excess cyclic movements the helicopter just before ground contact. The result is that the machine will climb slightly because there is no longer wasted energy from the over controlling . Over controlling is not always really apparent.it can be very subtle. Sometime just the difference between obvious control movements and control pressures. A simple demo--- establish a stabilized 2 to 3 foot hover. Introduce unneccesary slight cyclic movements that do not change the position over the ground (cross patterns or circular movements ) and do not move the collective and the helicopter will decend . Stop the unnecessary cyclic movements and the helicopter will go back to the original hover. What sometimes happens is that the pilot will be making unnecessary cyclic corrections (nerves or what ever) and stop them when they are almost on the ground causing the helicopter to rise up to its stable condition. Being one with the machine. I've seen this with many small helicopters especially the old A Stars Another Vietnam era pilot and former FAA safety iinspecter nice to know tip.
