Back in the 80's the only locations you'd find "ladies of the night" were on Van Buren St. Typically between 32 St. and 35 Ave. Years later, after the City Courts imposed "Restriction violations." The girls were forced from Van Buren St. to other streets, including 27 Ave.

Mayor Moffort in the 70's was an old Madam who had operated a Whore House in Superior Arizona. On the 1800 block of 15th Avenue was a cat house that catered to politicians, preachers and utility company officials. One judge had a heart attack there and carried out to ambulance on a stretcher with whores in lingerie watching. That incident finally got it closed down with all the attention.

You should have seen Van Buren back in the day. Holy hell! Friends and I used to cruise Van Buren between about 44th St. and Central back in the late '80s-early '90s and there were sometimes a hundred or more girls out. No, we never picked anyone up, it was just a fun area to cruise and pretend we were cool. 😄 It really was a spectacle though.

In the mid 90s I had no choice but to move into the weekly pay apartments right there on 27th and Indian school. A block north of the motel 6. When I would get off the bus coming home from work I would have to weave through the street walkers and crack dealers lol. But here's what's crazy in a way.. for an area that was FULL of crack and the heart of the hooker stroll.. it really wasn't violent. You could walk to the store at night and not get jumped. Nobody ever got shot. Since I lived there for awhile I even became friendly with some of the hookers.. not that way.. but as I walked home from work they would say hi and we had conversations lol. At first I was Leary because my apartments and that block was all black except me lol. And dealers and some gangsters.. but after a few months I was kinda like an adopted local or semi homeboy.. everyone knew me by face and said hi and was cool with me even though I seemed very out of place lol. One working girl became an actual friend. Never tried to hustle me . It was a trip.. oh.. I forgot there were some white guys but you never saw them unless they were pulling in or out .. the HELLS ANGELS club house was right next door to the apartments. Right on the other side of the wall.

@@TeezyT_Sunrise I'll have to look that up. Here's an odd fact about phx back in the day.. even though you had a lot of drugs and other shit.. street crime like getting mugged was VERY rare . Even though it was a city of 3 million. I swear it's because EVERYONE is armed lol. It's always been a right to carry state and half the folks you see at the store, park, ect have guns on them. You hardly really hear about people getting mugged or roled because it was to dangerous to the attacker lol. There was a 50% chance your victim had a gun on them and knew how to use it. It convinced me that all states should allow citizens to carry. I swear it actually made it safer. Even the poor guy working the graveyard shift at 7/11 might have a pocket rocket on him.. so things like armed robbery was much less than other places I've lived .. like Philly or Cleveland

Back when I was young nearly 70 years ago we were taught to ride on the sidewalk when possible or against traffic. Then in the 1960;s changed to being illegal to ride on the sidewalk and had to ride same direction as car traffic. In 1963 I was delivering the Arizona Republic newspaper on Central Avenue when a Phoenix Police car from opposite direction drifted across and hit me at about 40 MPH. Continued on and two blocks later hit a palm tree that stopped him. He was of course drunk. Police sure covered it ip quickly, replaced my papers and that day made my deliveries by police car. Neither my bike really damaged and I was unhurt. So besides replacing my papers and taking me through my delivery route I settled for $16. Hey Jack in the box has their tacos selling 12 for a dollar back then. I am now 75 and live in a town of about 8000 in Costa Rica and travel to at least 65 countries in Central, South America and the Caribbean yearly. Due to steep hills I recently resorted to an electric scooter. Used to have to walk my mountain bile up most hills. The mountain bike a 29 inch Beouwulf 29" inch frame, 29 inch wheels 27 speed and hydraulic disc brakes. Scary going downhill. The electric scooter 1200 watts and climbs the hill of most concern at 28 to 30 KPH on a 40 KPH Zone. Turning onto my street must do at least 20 KPH or turn around, go back down and try again.. Grade is approximately 30% Colombia is cool. Most places no vehicle traffic on Sundays and open to bicycles and hikers. Center of town it is pedestrian traffic only. Unbelievably bicyclists leave their unlocked bikes outside on the perimeter and no one disturbs them. Electric scooter will do 56 HPH, just shy of 35 MPH. Been wanting to compare to a gas moped on speed and hill climbing. But bet it is better and sure a lot quieter. As I do not have Residence I cannot obtain a driver's license, so this best works for me.

But necessity the mother of invention. Even the driveway of my house is a 31% incline. And some hills are as much as 42%. 30 to 35% common. The 80 cc motors are unmarked and no wat for police to test it. As for the 24,000 watt motorcyscle looks like a bike with an alternator on the back wheel. and of course a set of pedals.

I consider all US too dangerous with drugs and homeless, even the torn I left in Oregon with only 20,000 people. Yes there are some homeless in these other countries but travel with no more than a backpack. Spend 1 to 3 nights and move on. Plus all these places have public toilets to use for 5 to 15 cents. No money all they need do is ask and its free. Some have showers as well. But none of these countries have the drug problems of the US. In Costa Rica I live in a 7 bedroom/5 bath house with 4 car garage on 23 acres. My rent is $153 a month. And wild fruit that supplies my neighbors and about 150 more. Great weather. Never has been colder than 54F, never hotter than 87. My electric bill is between $12 and $15 a month. All non carbon source. A Taxi typically costs me less than $2 4 hour trip to San Jose, 2 hours shopping and return will cost $65 by taxi. Oh and living outside the US, I am US Income Tax Exempt on $107,300 yearly. My Costa Rican wife has no tax liability and so though married 8 years I still file US Income Tax as Single. Life is great. In the last 9 years traveled to 79 countries.
