The sound of steam engine chugging is fabulous. I used to travel from Mumbai to Manmad in the first class in the year 1966. From Mumbai to Igatpuri, there used to be electric traction. From Igatpuri to Bhusawal steam engine prevailed.

Yes. I was living in a railway colony in Ajni, Nagpur. Most Anglo Indians later settled in Secunderabad. There were British loco drivers also. They left for Britain. I had many Anglo Indian friends in 1950s-1960s

Unwise decission to withdraw these high power steam locomotives which are super masculine engines.Till date in many foreign countries high speed steam locomotive engines are engaged in passenger trains. These engines run by fire and water,the two fundamental needs for human survival. Their whistle, smoke exhaust pattern ,rhythmic chuk ,chuk, sound compound wheel connecting rod motion all are unique which attract all to see such a running engine..They shall not die unless we make them to die . Let again such engines come to tract to serve as old but not forgotten engines.

For Reggie DCunha my husband....been there!! Done that. Nostalgia for me ... husband was a Steam/Diesel/Electric locomotive driver. GrandDad was Mail engine Driver. Dad was Boiler Chargeman. I love the steam engine memories. A beautiful Wp, a good driver and a hard working Fireman. Not to talk about the screeching whistle.🤗🤗

Looks like he started off with a very small regulator opening. There was no strong puff from the blast pipe/ chimney. WP was my all time favourite loco. Too bad the loco was limited to 40 km/h. these beasts could crack 110-120 km/h.

"Akbar" is having a set of three drive wheels .Certainly its maximum speed would be 80/90kmph. US or Europian Rlys having extreme powerful steam engines with set of 4 to 5 drive wheels. Speed of steam engine depends on the the diameter of drive wheel and numbers of drive wheels.In India normally there were steam engines with max set of four drive wheels. Thanks

Not to put down your point, but the world’s fastest steam engine, the Mallard, had only 3 drive wheels each side. Also, from what I have read, the WP class (Akbar) could do nearly 120... maybe even 130 on a good day.

There were two type of loco in1985 WP- W for broad gauge & P for passanger service train ,. WG -for goods train both locomotive have some wheel difference. Firing is a art (means put coal in boiler is called boiler firing and tender firing means push coal from tender (I e rear portion of loco where coal is store) Both loco run on100kmph.F/man has to maintain steam pr and water in boiler.There is a lubricator to supply lubricant to pistons,Difficult work physically as I experienced in 1985 as I joined Railway at Daund as App F/ M "A" and work on steam locomotive from Dr to SUR & Manmad.
