I think that for the examples where many of us thought that there would be sp3 hybridization, instead turned out to be sp2, it was because the lone-pair present participated in resonance, and hence we didn't count it.

Explanation for personal understanding. Bro the case is due to the plane of lone pair. Like in that specific benzene case (eg. 16) or pyridine (eg.17). We already have a p orbital in plane. P-orbitals are 90° from each other, so the other two will be out of plane and hence that lone pair won't be counted. In eg.11 there is no other filled p-orbital so for sure the lone pair will be present in the best possible position for resonance. Tum isse ese soch skte ho ki jese oxygen pr 2 lone pair hone pr bhi woh ek pair se hi resonance krta hai, vahi case eg. 16 and 17 mein hai.
