The opening scene of Cillian wandering the REAL LIFE empty streets of London is one of the greatest opening scenes in horror movie history. You can see why it has been copied so many times in shows like The Walking Dead or spoofed like in the first paintball episode of Community.

Similar to the scene in Vanilla Sky with the empty Times Square, it's mind-boggling that they managed to get such an important area completely empty. I haven't actually seen VS so I don't know what the weight of that scene is like, but here it's really just such a perfect indicator of how fucked Britain is because of this infection, and it REALLY hammers home the weight of what's happened.

41:13 Selena has a very neat, subtle character arc. Since she's not the main protag it's in the background, but I still love it, and this is essentially the conclusion of that arc. Selena goes from having of "better them than me" to putting Hannah first. Both girls are about to be gang r*ped and she knows this. The Selena from the start of the movie would have been chugging those pills to numb herself, but the Selena now instead gives them to Hannah to numb her. Again, it's a small moment, but I love Selena's little background character arc.

Great reaction! RE: the dialogue you missed: the Sergeant said that the entire UK is just one big island, and the infection converts people too rapidly to ever cross the oceans (since a plane or boat full of infected people would be completely overrun and crash long before reaching the destination). So the rest of the world has literally just quarantined the entire UK, and carried on without them.

There are a couple of alternate endings to the film. The shorter of the two was after the escape from the military household, Seleena and Hannah find a medical facility in which they attempt to fix Jim's gunshot wound. We actually see a brief cut to this in Jim's flashback during the film's ending with Seleena drawing a syringe. Their attempt fails however and Jim dies on the table leaving Selena and Hannah a moment to grieve before taking up guns and walking out of the facility together just before the credits roll. Its an ending that leaves the fates of the two remaining heroines ambiguous and uncertain, and it didn't test well. The other ending was actually more like an entirely different third act to the film. At the rescue station when Frank gets infected, rather than killing him the group manages to knock him unconscious instead. Wanting to try and save him they bind him and continue to travel until they happen upon a medical research facility. Hoping for answers inside they attempt to enter but are stopped by a lone scientist who is hiding out within a bunker deeper in the facility. Jim pleads with him to help find a cure for the infection and the scientist tells him that there is already a cure, but that the cost is so high it doesn't even matter. They enter a stalemate and wind up in the facility for several days with Selena learning how to properly shoot using infected wandering around the facility as target practice, and Hannah taking care of her dead while Jim continues to plead with the man for help. Eventually, Jim wears the scientist down, and he agrees to tell them the cure to the infection. The proposed treatment is a complete blood transfusion for the infected individual. A decision is made to do it using one of the three survivor's as the donor with the understanding that whoever winds up giving their blood will become infected themselves during the procedure. The scientist takes blood samples from the group and its discovered that of all of them Jim has a compatible blood type and so he agrees to do it. In the end Frank is saved, and the film ends with an infected Jim thrashing and strapped down to a medical table as the group seals the door and locks him away. It was decided that this ending proved to have a lot of issues with the established continuity of the film and how bloodborn illness works on a basic level. Not to mention it was again, a very bleak and dire ending to the film. After some debate it was decided that the third act could use some revision, and the idea of the soldiers being brought in as the penultimate antagonists to the film's conclusion was adopted. On a final note, nobody in the process of production referred to or hinted at the infected being zombies or anything akin to undead. Though the film certainly hits many of those major points and stylized beats, and has become inspiration for many films that would follow, the director and writer have insisted many times that the infected are just that, Infected, and that the symptoms of their disease are paramount to the namesake of the virus afflicting them causing immense anger and mindless rage that lashes out at anything around them.

I saw this movie when it first came out and it's still my favorite "zombie" film because it's about society more than anything else. I love how it explores the idea of rage and how tenuous morality can be. Jim's character development from desperate survivor to ruthless killer is so visceral, a literal loss of innocence since the moment he had to kill the infected child. Selene and Hannah briefly thinking he was infected when he killed the soldier further hammers home that you don't have to be infected to be filled with uncontrollable rage. Ultimately, the infected had no control of their destructive actions, meanwhile the military survivors had a moral breakdown in their own little isolated group in less than a month. It really makes you think about who are the real monsters, and how quicky someone can devolve into one.

Andrew I think you missed the dialogue when Jim is explaining to Selena and Mark that he was a bike courier, he was hit by a car and the next thing he knew he woke up in a hospital bed and everyone is gone. So basically he has been in a coma for 28 days, hence the films title, and also the reason he's so "skinny and drawn" although I think thats just Cillian's natural body type and part of the reason he was cast.

The bulletin board of people looking for their loved ones from the beginning of the movie actually has a tragic real world inspiration. There was such a board up in New York City after 9/11. It spontaneously grew from the family’s who still had family memebers missing in wreckage and it stood for at least all of the early weeks of the rescue efforts if I remember correctly.

I'm from Ireland so I've been to London a few times and see it in the news and tv in general a fair bit so seeing all those massively populated places in England's capital being completely empty is crazy every time I see it!!

This movie inspired so much, even outside the zombie genre. Remember that scene at the end of Punisher season 1 where he killed Rawlings? Guess where they got that from. They even remixed the song In the House, In a Heartbeat for that scene.

I totally agree with the comments about last of us. At times it felt more of like a nuclear apocalypse where its mainly people as a threat vs infected. Its totally fine because the pay off was worth it. 28 days later is just such an incredible movie! Its so re watchable and so many things you can take from it. That last shot of Jim is one of my fav closing shots ever. Its wild to me too I visited london like 10 years ago now and I got celebrate new years in front of big ben. Its so crazy to realize the contrast lol

It's weird that most people forget that Selena is a chemist, so she has at least some medical training. LOVE this movie. I agree 100%; Cillian Murphy has such range, and is very good. Insane Batman villain to trans person during the Troubles to scientist trying to save the earth, etc.

This is such a perfect blend of classic and new zombie tropes. Love the running zombies and the evils of other survivalist. The music and walking around is almost a surrealist piece; love it. Also also, love how Shaun of the Dead gave this movie a tiny shout out at the end. Also there's an alternate ending where Jim does die and it's just the ladies that survive.

Y'ALL NEED TO WATCH Danny Boyle's next collab with Cillian Murphy!!! SUNSHINE... Psychological Sci-fi Thriller with my favorite performance from Chris Evans about scientists on their way to the Sun that happens to be dying to restart it.. b4 Earth freezes!! Crazy cerebral story.. very creepy stuff... Again, Danny Boyle kills it with tone, cinematography, sound, score, and workin' with an ensemble cast that are all (minus 1) Superstars now! LOOK UP THE TEASER TRAILER FOR THE FILM! 😁

I love this movie. It wasnt until this reaction that i put it together. The solidiers were hiding and waiting for something to happen to excuse k*lling one or both of the men. That way taking over the women like they had intended would be easier.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time and dare I say one of the most influential movies of the 21st Century so far. It was the blueprint for the “fast zombie” concept. Every single piece of zombie/post apocalyptic media that came out after 2002 was inspired by this movie in some way and modern zombie horror directors sprinkle 28 Days Later references in their work all the time. I’m so glad y’all enjoyed it! Please react to the sequel, 28 Weeks Later. It’s not as good as the first one but still a solid film overall. Danny Boyle has been teasing a third film (28 Months/Years Later) for ages and I’m still waiting on it 🙌🏽🧟‍♂️🩸

It gets even sadder when you realize there was no way Hannas dad was gonna make it, even without the blood in his eye. He wouldve just been killed by the soldiers cuz hed never let them have Hanna, and he wouldnt have been able to sneak away like Jim did.

My dad was in the army back in the 80s, and when he left, he kept us close to the base. I was in middle school when this movie came out. He told me and my stepbrothers that there’s scientists at the army base who were trying to create a virus like the one in this movie. He described it as rabies and Ebola mixed with “bath salts”. The infected would suffer psychosis and pretty much turn animalistic and kill each other before dying of exhaustion or internal bleeding within a week. One day at school, an alert was played over the intercom. There was a biological attack on the army base and our school was in the affected area. Our school went into lockdown. We were a rural school that had every grade in one building. The elementary school kids had to go to the elementary library, the junior high kids had to come down to the basement with us middle schoolers, and the high schoolers had to go into the lower level locker rooms and stairwell. Parents were calling the office, coming to the school and banging on the doors to get their kids, all us kids were freaking out. Turned out, it was a readiness test for the base that had been accidentally broadcast to local radio stations.

I'd recommend watching all of Danny Boyle's films, starting with "Shallow Grave", and definitely don't overlook "Sunshine". A lot of the same actors show up, the soundtracks (Murphy, Underworld, and the use of Brian Eno in 28DL).

Jim's character arc is about searching for a father. In the beginning he's lost and goes to church for guidance and he finds a monster, then he goes home to his parents and they're dead, then he finds a fatherly figure in Frank, he dies. His last hope for a protective father figure is the military guy who is evil making Jim to turn into the father figure he's been looking for himself.

Another great Danny Boyle/Cillian Murphy collaboration is a film called "Sunshine." I won't say too much to spoil it, but it's more of a science fiction film with an all star cast--Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne, Benedict Wong, etc. Highly recommend.

The saddest part for me was Selena giving Hanna something to make her emotionally numb. It’s hinted that she’s had it happen to her before so she’s trying to help Hanna feel less traumatized

All the people dead in the church in the beginning was especially sad when you realize the infected dont die off on their own very easily. So everyone went there to commit mass suicide. Was also the first "zombie" movie I can recall where they arent undead, just infected with a rabies like virus.

There are so many 'end of the world as we know it' films. NO BLADE OF GRASS features a total wipeout of vegetation with resulting starvations and mass murders as people battle for food. That's an interesting film because we have Good People turning into outright, cold-blooded murderers, barely wasting script time to justify themselves. A real "what would you REALLY do if - ?" film. THE WORLD, THE FLESH & THE DEVIL. Arch Oboler's FIVE.
