I didn't see a stove pipe damper any where. Thus will help hold more heat in the stove. Is your fire box just cast iron or is it lined with refractory cement? If it's lined and you have correct grates you can burn coal. Fire will last a lot longer on coal. If it's wood only just before bed put the biggest unsplit log you can fit in the fire box, add some smaller pieces if the fit. Cover over with Wood ash and close the air draft in the side and damper on stove pipe as much as you can with out smothering the fire. This should keep a banked fire for most if not all night. I'd suggest a book called Wood Stove Cookery that's available on eBay. It explains a lot about old cook stoves

Thanks for watching. We ran the stove the entire first winter with no stove pipe damper and found it very difficult to slow the fire down. This last fall I reinstalled the chimney to avoid exiting through the roof and we did install a stove pipe damper and it seems to help a lot this winter. We can now slow it down enough to not have to feed it more than once an hour where last year we had to feed it every 20 min. The stove is equiped to burn coal but we have plenty of wood. Thanks for the comment, hope you get the chance to watch some of our newer videos if you havent already.

We love heating our house with wood. It is a bit more work but we dont worry about the price of fuel. Thanks for watching.

Yall seem like real nice people but i have that same wood cook stove and live in a much smaller house and i sure hope that aint yalls primary heat. Its good while you have it roaring hot and if youre within 10 feet of it but its not kuch use past that ajf the wood is so small in order to fit into it that you have to refill it every 20 minutes. Id suggest a potbelly stove personally. Best of luck to yall

Thanks for the comment. We are new to wood heat and at the moment the Olympic is our only source of heat. So far we have only had nightly lows in the teens and have been happy with it. We will see how it goes when it gets colder. We are hopping a tall stove pipe and 2 inches of pink foam board will keep us warm enough but It does burn out pretty quick at night when we go to bed. We purchased ours without the cover for the clean-out under the oven and I had to make one. How cold do your winters get?

Nice stove! But I don’t know about moving in, it seems kinda drafty.

Hello, thanks for the comment. It was definitely drafty the first night! We are working hard to fix that which includes a stack of pink foam board.

At 2:36, it looks like you are missing the door on the cleanout opening under the oven. Is this true, or is it just not visible?

Yes. Unfortunately the ash clean out door was missing when we purchased it. I had to improvise and make my own in order for the stove to function properly.

@@johansenfamilyvlog8972 Glad you figured out how to work around the missing piece. We cook and heat with a woodburning cookstove, too. You can see our setup at my blog: woodcookstovecooking.blogspot.com Hope you are enjoying your stove as much as we enjoy ours!

When we first got the cook stove we didn't know anything about them but it didn't make sense to me that the stove should be allowed to such in air there. So I found a picture online of our stove and realized that it needs a cover. We are actually burning mostly Eastern White Pine with some Aspen and a few chunks from some old Oak boards our neighbor was getting rid of. We were not prepared to spend this winter at our property so we were unable to properly season hardly any wood. When we burn dry wood, mostly sticks and dead standing, we have to be careful not to over fire the stove. When we burn wet split wood we can barely seem to keep it going. With the small not air tight firebox it pretty much burns out as soon as we go to bed. We go to bed in the 70s or low 80s and wake up in the 50s. It has been an adventure and so far we love it!
