I just rode the Texas Eagle roundtrip from Texas to Chicago. My sleeping car attendant Sean confirmed to me there is a decent chance of traditional dining service returning to the Eagle in October of this year. He’s also optimistic that Amtrak still has plans to return as many sightseer lounges to service as possible and restore it to the Eagle. We shall see what happens.

About 20 years ago my ex lost a sister, I agreed to be a Pall Bearer, we all loved Sister Sue, I took the Texas Eagle from Dallas to transfer in Chicago to Philadelphia, I was surprised the conductor came by offering upgrades to sleeper, it wasn't a bad deal, but as funerals are, they can hit when the wallet is weak. The second train leaving Chicago was delayed due to adding on to the consist.. of course the inevitable happens, somewhere between Chicago and Pennsylvania someone decided to commit suicide by train and not wait for it to pass.. Overall the journey was good and I enjoyed my French Toast. The only downsides were bathrooms were lower level, the accident delay, and arrival weather.. a word of advice, bring power strip and extension cord, and snacks, the Cafe car is too expensive and the attendant has no relief so it shuts down.

A few corrections: 1) On Viewliners, the temperature control only adjusts the heat, not the cooling. The only adjustment to the cooling is the vent control. I believe that's the same on Superliners. 2) Bedrooms cannot accommodate 4 adults. They're really intended for 2. You can squeeze in a 3rd adult or child, but that will require booking on the phone or in person, and with 3 adults, 2 have to get very cozy on the slightly wider lower berth. You can have 4 in a bedroom only if that includes at least 2 children. 3) It's possible but unlikely that either traditional dining or the Sightseer Lounge will return to the Eagle in 2023. At this time, the Silvers are the only trains planned to have traditional dining returned. The unused SIghtseer Lounges were mothballed during the pandemic, and no plans have been announced to restore them.

One more thing, coach passengers will also be permitted to purchase meals in the dining car on certain long haul routes this year sometime starting with the Coast Starlight. Meanwhile no new upgrades for the Texas Eagle despite the fact that the Eagle has seen more amenity cuts and degrades than any other route. The fact that management brushed off an attendee at the St. Louis board who confronted them, calling their decision to operate the Texas Eagle without a sightseer lounge or traditional dining “an abomination” proves they don’t care about their Texas Eagle customers enough if even at all.
@johnsons74thsquadron74

Nevertheless, I really have a hard time believing that the Texas Eagle will operate like this when Amtrak is back to it’s historic pre-pandemic fleet availability, I feel confident that the Eagle will regain a transition sleeper, a sightseer lounge, and hopefully a third coach during peak travel periods. I am worried though that the Texas Eagle may never regain traditional dining.

Another excellent video, this one for a trip I've experienced personally! Having spent many years in Texas as well as having lived in or travelled to/through every part of Texas the Eagle crosses in your video, it has a special resonance for me. Hence, I'm sorry to hear that the experience is less than optimal at the moment, and glad to hear that the traditional dining, and hopefully the sightseeing car, are supposed to be restored in the not-too-distant future.
@ronclark9724

When all of the Superliner fleet of cars have been refurbished, the Eagle will get both back... Amtrak chose to pull from the shared train sets of the Texas Eagle/Capitol Limited than pull sightseeing lounges and diners from those serving the west coast... You have to pull cars from service to refurbish them... After nearly 50 years in service whatever extra cars Amtrak had have disappeared by derailments and crashes...

I recently got a response from an Amtrak customer service rep. According to the response, Amtrak has plans to return the sightseer lounge to the Eagle, though it’s still too early for them to provide a timeline, although the progress of restoring the stored equipment at the Beech Grove Shops is expected to speed up this fiscal year. That said Amtrak does not have a commitment to restoring traditional dining on the Texas Eagle. It’s only being considered right now.

@johnsons74thsquadron74
@johnsons74thsquadron74 Жыл бұрын
@@LonestarTrips I hope so dearly too. But a sightseer lounge return is a gigantic step in the right direction. This will allow for the cafe to be separated from the diner lounge, where the cafe currently is, allowing dedicated lounge space for sleeping car customers in that car, eliminating long lines for the cafe, and loosen cafe hour restrictions. The floor to ceiling windows on the sightseer lounge make it a great place to be while going through scenic places on the Eagle like St. Louis, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, the Ozarks, or the Piney Woods. But best of all, the sightseer lounge will allow for passengers to spend time on the train, someplace else other than their accommodation. No more being stuck in your seat or bunk for 31 hours if you’re riding the entire Chicago to San Antonio route, you can get up, leave and spend time in the lounge for a couple to even a few hours whenever you want.

@LonestarTrips

When you book a roomette, it’s yours only. The pricing works by charging a base fare for travel for each passenger, with an additional roomette charge applied on top for the accommodation. The roomette charge is a flat rate for one or two passengers, so a second person would only add the base fare amount to the total price.

No the family bedroom is 2 adults and 2 kids, for 2 adults, and a bedroom fits only 2 adults. So you have a few options for the room if you have 4 adults. The most expensive option is you can get 2 bedrooms next to each other but must call to arrange that and that will be on the 2nd floor, Another cheaper option will be to get 1 family bedroom and 1 roommate but make sure you get the roommate number 14 to be close to the family bedroom. The cheapest option I guess would be to get 2 roommates accross from each other but have to call Amtrak for that so they get you 2 accross roomates on the same floor since roomates on the 2 floor cars are on both floors.

Like Greyhound buses, Amtrak passenger cars run nearly nearly all of the time with barely a few hours to service and wash at terminus stations where they turn around sometimes three days later. They are NOT washed daily every night like city buses or school buses. Nor are there a dedicated cleaning crew onboard a train. The sleeping car porters have their hands full providing services to the sleeping cars, the cafe attendant has to close shop for a break, the conductor is on the radio with the train dispatchers and scanning tickets at every stop, and the engineers are driving the train... If you want to clean the train if it doesn't meet your cleaning standards, please do... These Superlliner cars are approaching 50 years in age, they are not brand new rolling stock. Considering their age, it is a wonder they are still running as well as they do, mind you they are not running perfectly. Yet everyone bitches when the train is ten minutes late, never mind that old HVAC system or the hot water tank is not providing hot water...

@@scottsheehan1596 The empire builder from Chicago to Seattle comes in at 2206 miles, and the Portland section going a little further at 2257. The Texas Eagle’s full route from Chicago to LA via San Antonio comes in at 2728 miles, much farther than the Empire Builder.

What!! 28 hours from Chicago illions to Austin Texas? Unless you are on a sight seeing vacation on rails, that's too long!!!! Again!!! The mighty United States of America needs highspeed rail. A nation so gong ho on Technology that americans have no problems putting their private lives and information out there. A people so quick to get rid of something old even if it's working perfectly and replace it with technology and complexities. Everyone has given up their lives and givin in to computers. Everything is on line. You have to go on line for everything except to take a pee. Yet for some reason America will keep their slow and lethargic american trains called Amtrak instead of replacing them with Bullets that not only travel at 225 to 255 mph but are equipped with great upgrades. These technical modern marvels would fit right in with a country and people who are all about technology. Hell America even made the greatest cars on earth. These cars where so great and long lasting they called them, american muscle, now replaced with more expensive cheaply built, bullshit on wheels. Now electric cars are rising up and they cost even more. But americans just can't advance themselves when it comes to these modern marvels of transportation which would greatly improve infrastructure. Oh well, american ignorance i guess. Highspeed bullet trains and maglev super train technology, the new american dream.....

Unfortunately the freight lines own the vast majority of the infrastructure. They run their trains on it. These cannot safely share one track with 225mph trains. All of the track would have to be ripped and replaced as well as straightened in some places. Some bridges and tunnels would have to be replaced to handle hsr. Lastly we don't have electrification on our western routes It would simply be too expensive to build the infrastructure. We had to fight really hard to get a few billion dollars. Japan approved $5 trillion to build maglev infrastructure. The will of the taxpayer just isn't there Unfortunately. I really wish it was. That said they are building a high speed line between where i live in Vegas to California. Initially to Victorville where I believe there is connection to conventional train to LA Union Station. I believe they intend to extend it a bit further in the future but still not all the way to LA. This is a private project and it's in a place where building brand new infrastructure is economically feasible. I'm very excited for this

It is on a technicality! When it runs all the way to LA, it is, but the segment between Chicago and San Antonio is not.

Amtrak has to beg for proper funding. The money that has been wasted on Ukraine could probably pay for laying down dedicated tracks for Amtrak trains in numerous locations which would dramatically improve on time performance.
