Many are asking about the drainage, lanscaping and planting. I hope to show you the plans in this and the next video. The reason behind the landscaping was because of the issues of flooding from the field (you’ve all seen me tackle that barefoot!) Drainage will be put in, in time. For now - and the time I have - this is where I am up to…. Let me know what you think about the time capsule and ancient tree idea? Thanks all. Richard.

I love the idea of a time capsule. Those trees will be there forever. Are you going to put more than one persons name in a capsule? Based on their donation amount? Maybe multiple donators? 😊 could go that for each olive tree. 💕

Hi, some friendly advice. Hire an auger (post hole digger) if you can. If so dig your hole, fill it with water as others have said, wait for it to drain then widen as needed with a spade. In your bare hole, add a couple of handfuls of gypsum (breaks down clay, release nutrients, helps with drainage), plant with high quality composted soil, (bags or bulk from your plant nursery) allow the roots to quickly & easily begin spreading, promotes growth, allows drainage, good habitat for microbes, worms, the good stuff😉), only back fill to the base of the trunk where it's level with the existing soil height of the pot, don't pile soil up around the trunk as it will promote rot. Create a low wall around the tree with excess soil to create a basin for watering. This time of year, give them one reasonably heavy first watering post planting, preferably mid to late morning if your getting freezing temps over night. Also consider the direction of your prevailing winds ensuring your support poles are more or less between them & your tree. I would assume your plant nursery staff would offer this information and may differ a little given their local knowledge. Hope this helps. Best of luck. 👍

Water the hole you digout. Drown it , fill it a few times after you are happy with the depth, might take a few repeats over a day or so. Then fill in around the plant mix in some peat free compost , water again. I would also put in a 1/2 m cheap plastic down pipe, drilled with lots of holes from base of root to top of plant, makes future watering really easy and stops run off.🇮🇪☘️

Just a tip from a professional gardener. You planted the olive trees way too deep. Trees should be planted with the top of the soil meeting the tree's base root flare. What you've done instead is plant the actual trunk. The problem that comes from this is the tree will send roots out from that top part but they will circle round the trunk and girdle the tree eventually (it can kill the tree). You might wanna just dig them all up again and plant them right so you don't have this problem later down the road. I know you don't want to hear this, but I had to let you know! In any case it's easier to redig/plant them now than later once they'd established all their roots!
@ChristopherKretchАй бұрын
Great advice brocktoon8. What about the soil? Looks very hard clay. Do you think he should get a load of topsoil so they can establish themselves better?
@JapanJimmyАй бұрын
From a bonsai enthusiast in Tokyo Japan, yes top spoil and mulch needs to be added to make a larger area for the roots to get established before hitting the clay. Composting and fertilization of the area would be ideal too. Also deer protection for any saplings

Hey Richard...hate to rain on your parade, but as others are saying, that soil needs to be well watered before and after planting. Also, THAT soil needs amending big-time. We've gone through this over the years, so only trying to pass on stuff that helps in the long run. I think you might need to plant the trees not quite so deep, as well...then put a good layer of mulch over the planting area to help retain moisture. And remember (so you won't be disappointed), plants grow like this: Year 1: SLEEP Year 2: CREEP Year 3: LEAP! 🌳🍀🌳🍀🌳

I am also wondering if that level is subsoil, not topsoil, given the hard pan and fact that it was excavated down from the natural grade to make the terraced bench. I would consult with your nursery guy about that. I suspect a truckload of enriched topsoil spread over that level is needed before planting, sorry to break the news🙃 soil prep is everything for success. All the best.

The comments about depth of planting are valid but don’t panic - just scoop out around the trunks down to the original depth in the pot and leave a depression around the trunk about 6 inches diameter - this will help with directing water to the roots while the tree establishes. It will hold water rather than cause water to run off. Even olive trees need regular watering in their first year planted but having a depression around the trunk will make sure the tree catches rainwater well. Take advice from the nursery on how to plant each species of tree going forwards - give everything you plant a good watering. Great start though

I concur with those saying water the soil very very well before digging soak the plants in a large bucket of water especially if as you immerse them they release air bubbles the compost your hole having soaked the hole well . Plant the plants in a/ tree no higher than they were in the pots , back fill and tread in well . Can mix a slow release fertiliser in . Water well regularly for the first year at least. Clay soil actually holds better nutrients as well and so with take more diverse planting .

Hi, my advice is to dig a 2 inch hole file with water and leave returning to top up. Leave for a few days and you will find the clay/soil will be easier to dig. Place trees in a tray of water so that the roots are well nourished before planting. Purchase a stake driver for your own convenience (easier) and quicker. Posts only need to be a quarter to a third of the hight of tree to hold in position but allow movement of the upper part of the tree which will aid its development. Russell (Horticulturist) Best wishes

Richard: I’m not a gardener and do not know such things but if the soil is that hard and compacted, how is the tree able to survive? Wouldn’t it be better to dig larger holes and fill with some good loom and nutrients, etc before you plant the trees? Again, I do not know but I’d hate to see you do all this work and not have the trees survive. Love your videos and your energy! Keep it up!

Just to add to the professional advice about the hole for the root ball,the depth,soil preparation etc can I add put the stakes in at 45degrees in the direction of the prevailing wind, you’ve dug wide holes and can’t use half of it because of the stake. At 45 degrees you can get the post absolutely adjacent to the trunk but remember to tie it in using a figure of 8 type method so the trunk doesn’t rub against the stake. They should intersect at about 45-60 cms up the trunk to allow the top of the plant to sway in the wind but without having any root rocking.

At 23:35 you look like a Gondoliere. You could hire a four stroke auger but you'd have to have a strong stance otherwise you'd be spinning in circles instead of the drill😁. I don't know your altitude but you could consider planting some vines to make wine. Eventually it will be much easier to convert all your plugs and sockets to the Schuko type. The modern sockets are modular and they just push out so you can have it your preferred way. All power tools now will fit the Schuko socket. Be sure not to plant any pine trees near the house because the roots will gradually dominate. I think you deserve a beer now.🍻

Nursery worker’s tip to get the rootball out of the pot… lay the plant on its side onthe ground, step down on the pot and repeat while rolling the pot. It’ll pop out easy. Looks like they may be root bound so you must tease apart the roots with a garden fork to break the shape from the pot or they will never thrive as roots will just keep growing round and round the pot shape instead of spreading out. Lots of other great planting advise from others here too. Most critical, water hole before planting, amend soil, adding a handful of bonemeal helps root establisment, and absolutely do not plant deeper than the current depth in the pot, ie, ensure the soil surface when in the hole is same and it was in the pot.

What a joy to plant a garden - one with endless space and such a view. Be mindful when choosing some plants that some can be very messy - you don't want your patio area covered with dropping fruit, olives etc. and the rotting fruit attracting wasps then. My Italian neighbors had a wisteria growing on their pergola- the patio furniture was covered with bird poop and very acidic too. Wisteria (the iron plant) and their roots can be very destructive, they also send up runners. I would bury the time capsule under your deck, it really became so much more than just a deck - it was a place for dreams to unfold even when the stars themselves were still sleeping.

It has low water needs too and likes lots of sun, you can kill with overwatering.Italians in the old days often planted perrennial herb gardens, plum trees and roses very close to their grape vines, for a variety of reasons like pest cont control/benificial insects, disease and adding good range of flavor to grapes.My vines in canada were planted in this tradition, my grapes and wine had great depth of flavor!

Love the plug section - italian plugs/electrics are just bizarre - we aways end up taking bags of plugs/adaptors with varying numbers/widths of pin whenever we come over to visit and there's usually about three or more stuck in every socket - good luck with that! : )

Experience talking here: a headlamp is a great nighttime tool, you are hands free and can avoid tripping or hacking away at your feet. 👏👏👏👏
